Photosynthetic light harvesting in excess light is regulated by a process known as feedback deexcitation. Femtosecond transient absorption measurements on thylakoid membranes show selective formation of a carotenoid radical cation upon excitation of chlorophyll under conditions of maximum, steady-state feedback deexcitation. Studies on transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants confirmed that this carotenoid radical cation formation is correlated with feedback deexcitation and requires the presence of zeaxanthin, the specific carotenoid synthesized during high light exposure. These results indicate that energy transfer from chlorophyll molecules to a chlorophyllzeaxanthin heterodimer, which then undergoes charge separation, is the mechanism for excess energy dissipation during feedback deexcitation. 相似文献

Members of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) and interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R) superfamily share an intracytoplasmic Toll-IL-1 receptor (TIR) domain, which mediates recruitment of the interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase (IRAK) complex via TIR-containing adapter molecules. We describe three unrelated children with inherited IRAK-4 deficiency. Their blood and fibroblast cells did not activate nuclear factor kappaB and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and failed to induce downstream cytokines in response to any of the known ligands of TIR-bearing receptors. The otherwise healthy children developed infections caused by pyogenic bacteria. These findings suggest that, in humans, the TIR-IRAK signaling pathway is crucial for protective immunity against specific bacteria but is redundant against most other microorganisms. 相似文献

These guidelines have been designed to assist in the planning, operation and interpretation of studies which would serve to assess the efficacy of drugs against internal parasites of horses. Although the term anthelmintic is used in the title and text, these guidelines include studies on drug efficacy against larvae of horse bot flies, Gasterophilus spp., which are non-helminth parasites commonly occurring in the stomach of horses. The advantages, disadvantages and application of critical and controlled tests are presented. Information is also provided on selection of animals, housing, feed, dose titration, confirmatory and clinical trials, record keeping and necropsy procedures. These guidelines should assist both investigators and registration authorities in the evaluation of compounds using comparable and standard procedures with the minimum number of animals. 相似文献

The evaluation of soybean genotypes for resistance to iron deficiency through field experiments is complicated by variation in symptom expression. The objective of this study was to develop a tissue culture technique that could distinguish between Fe‐efficient and Fe‐inefficient genotypes. Ten soybean genotypes varying in sensitivity to iron deficiency were planted at 5 locations and rated based on chlorosis expression. For the lab evaluation, friable callus of the ten genotypes was placed on a 4MSII medium amended with 10 mM NaHCO3. Callus growth reduction relative to a control medium without NaHCO3 was recorded. Callus weight of all cultivars was affected by the addition of NaHCO3 however, significant differences in growth reduction among genotypes was observed. The high correlation between callus growth reduction and field chlorosis ratings observed (r2=0.92) and the fact that the expiant source plant can be grown to produce seed indicates that this technique would be useful in a soybean breeding program. 相似文献

Concern over the pollution potential of nitrogen (N) fertilisers has prompted studies of the utilisation efficiency of applied N by crops. This study was conducted to determine the efficiency of N usage by bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) grown with plastic mulch and trickle irrigation, and to define a rate of applied N which is equal to uptake by the crop. The relationships between applied N (0, 70, 140, 210, and 280 kg/ha), nutrient uptake, and yield for spring and autumn bell pepper crops grown on a major soil type (Tropeptic Eutrustox) in the Bundaberg region of subtropical Australia were investigated. Maximum dry weight yield of fruit, leaves, roots, and stems corresponded with N210 to N280 for both spring and autumn crops. In addition, maximum fresh weight of marketable fruit corresponded with N210 to N280 for both seasons. Nitrogen uptake was equal to the applied rate at N140. Plant uptake of elements increased with applied N and, at N280, were ranked as follows: K> N> Ca> Mg > S > P. Fruit accumulated the greatest proportion of K, N, and P (40 to 64%, 40 to 64%, 49 to 76%, respectively), and only a comparatively small amount of Ca (6 to 7%). The efficiency of fruit production from absorbed applied N declined with increasing N rate. District standard rates of P, N, K, and S application exceeded uptake by plants grown at an equivalent N rate (differences of 68 and 65 kg P, 57 and 52 kg N, 32 and 24 kg K, and 19 and 24 kg S for spring and autumn, respectively). Because of the importance of pepper yield as a determinant in economic outcome and the relatively low cost of fertiliser N, application rates in excess of N140 are likely to continue by district growers in an attempt to maximise yield. 相似文献

Manganese (Mn) deficiency is a widespread problem on the alkaline soils, particularly for durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum), which is more sensitive than either bread wheat or barley. The existence of considerable genetic variation in current germplasm of durum wheat (a relative yield of 58% in Stojocri 2 compared to 15% in check cv Yallaroi) and the development of a consistent selection criterion (Mn content of 35‐day‐old seedlings) has made breeding for Mn efficiency feasible. The development of Mn‐efficient durum wheat would be facilitated if the mode of inheritance was well understood. F1 hybrid, F2, and F2‐derived families from a cross between Stojocri 2 (moderately efficient) and Hazar (inefficient) were studied under controlled‐environment conditions. F1 hybrid was intermediate to the parents, indicating incomplete dominance and dependence on external Mn concentration. Analysis of 110 F2 and 220 F3 single plants (including 20 F2‐derived F3 families) showed that the observed variance was in agreement with the expected variance of a population segregating for two genes. Chi‐square analysis of the segregation ratios of F3 families also supported the digenic segregation hypothesis. Currently Stojocri 2 is used in a breeding program for the transfer of Mn efficiency to commercial varieties, by backcrossing (two backcrosses retain about 88% of recurrent parent genotype). 相似文献

The root morphology (root length, diameter) of the three wheat genotypes (Triticum aestivum L. cvs Excalibur and Gatcher, and T. turgidum conv. durum (Desf.) McKay cv Durati) grown in zinc (Zn)‐deficient, sandy soil under controlled conditions has been measured by a root scanner coupled to a computer. Wheat plants were supplied with 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, or 0.4 mg Zn/kg soil. Excalibur has previously been identified as the Zn‐efficient genotype which can take up more Zn and has higher yield in soils with low plant‐available Zn. Durati is Zn‐inefficient and Gatcher an intermediate genotype with respect to Zn efficiency. Root and shoot dry matter significantly increased at 0.1 mg Zn/kg soil compared to the 0 Zn level. Zinc content in shoots was lower in Durati than in Excalibur and Gatcher at sufficient supply of Zn. Zinc applications had no significant effect on root morphology at two weeks after sowing. At that time, however, the Zn‐efficient genotype Excalibur developed a longer and thinner roots (greater proportion of fine roots with diameter <0.2 mm) than the less efficient Gatcher and Zn‐inefficient Durati. Hence, growing longer and thinner roots and having a greater proportion of thinner roots in the total root biomass early in the growth period may be the two characters associated with the Zn‐efficient genotypes. 相似文献
