In the course of screening for novel naturally occurring insecticides from plants, the activity of the fruit extract of the Argentinian Melia azedarach L. (Meliaceae) and its recently described limonoid meliartenin were investigated. The antifeedant activity of the fruit extract was tested on a variety of herbivore and granivorous insects through choice tests. Sixteen of 17 species belonging to three orders consume significantly less food when treated with the extract. The bioactivity of the isolated active compound meliartenin and its interchangeable isomer 12-hydroxiamoorastatin (1) was further studied. In choice tests, compound 1 inhibited feeding of Epilachna paenulata Germ. (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae) larvae, with an ED(50) value of 0.80 microg/cm(2), comparable to that of azadirachtin (2) and lower than that of toosendanin (3) (0.72 and 3.69 microg/cm(2), respectively), both compounds used for comparison purposes. In no-choice tests, E. paenulata larvae reared on food treated with 1 or 2 ate less, gained less weight, and suffered greater mortality rates than control larvae. The activity of compound 1 was comparable to that of 2, with LD(50) values of 0.76 and 1.24 microg/cm(2), respectively, at 96 h. Shorter LT(50) values were recorded for 1 at 4 and 1 microg/cm(2) in comparison with 2. Thus, M. azedarach fruit extract and its active principle have interesting potential for use in pest control programs. 相似文献

Experiments on the adsorption of alpha-zein (characterized by SDS-PAGE) from aqueous ethanol and 2-propanol solutions onto hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces are reported. Zein adsorption onto self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) was detected by surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Gold substrates were prepared by thermal evaporation on glass slides. Gold-coated surfaces were modified by depositing SAMs of either a long-chain carboxylic acid terminated thiol [COOH(CH2)(10)SH] or a methyl-terminated alkanethiol [CH3(CH2)(7)SH]. Experimental measurements indicated that zein interacted with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. Zein concentration affected the thickness of bound zein layers. The estimated thickness of the zein monolayer deposited on hydrophilic surfaces was 4.7 nm. Zein monolayer thickness on hydrophobic surfaces was estimated at 4.6 nm. The topography of zein layers was examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) after solvent was evaporated. Surface features of zein deposits depended on the adsorbing surface. On hydrophilic surfaces, roughness values were high and distinct ring-shaped structures were observed. On hydrophobic surfaces, zein formed a uniform and featureless coverage. 相似文献

The mammalian gastric and oral mucosa may be colonized by mixed Helicobacter and Campylobacter species, respectively, in individual animals. To better characterize the presence and distribution of Helicobacter and Campylobacter among marine mammals, we used PCR and 16S rDNA sequence analysis to examine gastric and oral samples from ten dolphins (Tursiops gephyreus), one killer whale (Orcinus orca), one false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens), and three wild La Plata river dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei). Helicobacter spp. DNA was widely distributed in gastric and oral samples from both captive and wild cetaceans. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated two Helicobacter sequence clusters, one closely related to H. cetorum, a species isolated from dolphins and whales in North America. The second related cluster was to sequences obtained from dolphins in Australia and to gastric non-H. pylori helicobacters, and may represent a novel taxonomic group. Dental plaque sequences from four dolphins formed a third cluster within the Campylobacter genus that likely represents a novel species isolated from marine mammals. Identification of identical Helicobacter spp. DNA sequences from dental plaque, saliva and gastric fluids from the same hosts, suggests that the oral cavity may be involved in transmission. These results demonstrate that Helicobacter and Campylobacter species are commonly distributed in marine mammals, and identify taxonomic clusters that may represent novel species. 相似文献

Water buffalo industry has become a profitable activity worldwide, including the Northeast of Argentina (NEA). However, research on diseases affecting this species is scarce. The aim of the present study was to detect antibodies against Brucella abortus, Leptospira spp., Neospora caninum, Toxoplasma gondii, and Sarcocystis spp. in 500 water buffalo cows from five ranches (100 animals each) in the NEA. Serum samples were tested for B. abortus by fluorescence polarization assay, Leptospira spp. by microagglutination test, and N. caninum, T. gondii, and Sarcocystis spp. by indirect fluorescent antibody tests. Overall, the proportion of seropositive animals was 6.4, 22.2, 42.2, 25.4, and 50.8 % for brucellosis, leptospirosis, neosporosis, toxoplasmosis, and sarcocystosis, respectively. The proportion of seropositive animals for all diseases was statistically different among herds (p?<?0.05). Statistical differences were also detected among age groups for brucellosis and neosporosis (p?<?0.05). The detection of specific antibodies to B. abortus, Leptospira spp., and several Apicomplexa protozoans in water buffaloes in the NEA is reported in this study. 相似文献

Zein films prepared by resin were coated with either flax oil or tung oil and cured by UV- or gamma-radiation. Coated zein films were then evaluated for tensile and water barrier properties. Film microstructure was examined by transmitted light microscope. Tensile strength, elongation, and toughness of oil-coated samples increased substantially with respect to uncoated films. Flax oil coated samples showed an increase in elongation of 300%. It was suggested that oil coatings fill in pinholes and cracks existing in zein films, affecting their mechanical properties. Water vapor permeability also decreased statistically for coated film (except for tung oil coated-UV treated films), suggesting water vapor transfer was controlled by film hydrophobicity and microstructure. Moreover, the liquid water transmission rate of coated films was at least 10 times slower than for control films. Examination of film microstructure revealed that flax oil coatings had uniform coverage and smooth finish, which explained their high elongation, low water vapor permeability. Tung oil coatings cured under UV light showed patterns of intertwined dark and light regions, which may be caused by cross-linking and drying at different times. The oriented structures were found when tung oil coatings were cured by gamma-radiation. 相似文献

Freshwater ecosystems constitute only a small fraction of the planet's water resources, yet support much of its diversity, with freshwater fish accounting for more species than birds, mammals, amphibians or reptiles. Fresh waters are, however, particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts, including habitat loss, climate and land use change, pollution and biological invasions. This environmental degradation, combined with unprecedented rates of biodiversity change, highlights the importance of robust and replicable programmes to monitor freshwater fish. Such monitoring programmes can have diverse aims, including confirming the presence of a single species (e.g., early detection of alien species), tracking changes in the abundance of threatened species, or documenting long‐term temporal changes in entire communities. Irrespective of their motivation, monitoring programmes are only fit for purpose if they have clearly articulated aims and collect data that can meet those aims. This review, therefore, highlights the importance of identifying the key aims in monitoring programmes and outlines the different methods of sampling freshwater fish that can be used to meet these aims. We emphasize that investigators must address issues around sampling design, statistical power, species’ detectability, taxonomy and ethics in their monitoring programmes. Additionally, programmes must ensure that high‐quality monitoring data are properly curated and deposited in repositories that will endure. Through fostering improved practice in freshwater fish monitoring, this review aims to help programmes improve understanding of the processes that shape the Earth's freshwater ecosystems and help protect these systems in face of rapid environmental change. 相似文献

Interest in biodegradable materials for packaging and agricultural uses has grown in recent years. Plant proteins have been proposed as inexpensive, renewable, and abundant feedstock. Corn zein was investigated based on value-added considerations and on the unique thermoplastic and hydrophobic properties of zein. Films prepared from zein are known to be tough and resistant, but also hard and brittle, thus requiring the addition of plasticizers to improve flexibility. The objectives of this research were to study the tensile properties, water absorption, and microstructure of zein sheets plasticized with palmitic and stearic acids. Both palmitic and stearic acids showed similar effects as plasticizers of zein. Tensile strength of zein sheets increased with the addition of low levels of plasticizers. However, beyond a critical point, tensile strength decreased with further addition of fatty acids. Water absorption decreased continuously with increasing fatty acid content. Kinetic parameters indicated fatty acids decreased water absorption by decreasing the saturation level of zein sheets. Coating zein with flax oil decreased the rate of water absorption by sealing off surface pores. Scanning electron micrographs of zein sheets showed the development of layered structures as fatty acid content increased. Zein-fatty acid layers were believed to be responsible for the increased tensile strength of plasticized zein sheets and to have contributed to increased resistance to water absorption. 相似文献

Our ability to develop strategies to mitigate climate change includes an understanding of, and our capacity to predict soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics in livestock systems. Here we assess the capability of the Sustainable Grazing System (SGS) Pasture Model for predicting pasture growth (elongated wheatgrass, Thinopyrum ponticum) and SOC accumulation in different environments and under a range of pasture management practices in hydrohalomorphic soils located in South-eastern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. After Model calibration, aerial net primary productivity (ANPP) and TSOC content under two grazing intensities (7.5 and 11 cm post-grazing target heights) and two N fertilization levels (0 and 100 kg N ha−1 yr−1) were simulated over a 10 year-period. The SGS Pasture Model predicted 87% of the observed ANPP, with observed and predicted ANPPs averaging 1.46 and 1.42 Mg ha−1 yr−1, respectively. There were differences in simulated ANPP between fertilized and unfertilized treatments both at high and low grazing intensities for the last year of the period. Total SOC contents from the modelling showed differences between high (83.7 to 84.2 Mg ha−1) and low (86.8 to 87.5 Mg ha−1) grazing intensities, with treatments receiving N also showing higher carbon stocks. The positive effect of reduced grazing intensity on soil carbon was explained by an increased input of aerial and subterranean dry matter into the soil. Sensitivity analysis showed that SGS is a robust model, capable of performing effectively under a variety of conditions. Hence, it can be used for exploring management practices to mitigate the impact of livestock systems on emissions and SOC stocks. 相似文献

American Foulbrood (AFB) of honeybees (Apis mellifera L.), caused by the Gram-positive bacterium Paenibacillus larvae is one of the most serious diseases affecting the larval and pupal stages of honeybees (A. mellifera L.). The aim of the present work was to asses the response of 23 strains of P. larvae from diverse geographical origins to tilmicosin, a macrolide antibiotic developed for exclusive use in veterinary medicine, by means of the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the agar diffusion test (ADT). All the strains tested were highly susceptible to tilmicosin with MIC values ranging between 0.0625 and 0.5 microg ml(-1), and with MIC(50) and MIC(90) values of 0.250 microg ml(-1). The ADT tests results for 23 P. larvae strains tested showed that all were susceptible to tilmicosin with inhibition zones around 15 microg tilmicosin disks ranging between 21 and 50mm in diameter. Oral acute toxicity of tilmicosin was evaluated and the LD(50) values obtained demonstrated that it was virtually non-toxic for adult bees and also resulted non-toxic for larvae when compared with the normal brood mortality. Dosage of 1000 mg a.i. of tilmicosin applied in a 55 g candy resulted in a total suppression of AFB clinical signs in honeybee colonies 60 days after initial treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the effectiveness of tilmicosin against P. larvae both in vitro and in vivo. 相似文献
