Downy mildew of lettuce, caused by Bremia lactucae, is difficult to control in soilless systems by using conventional methods of disease management because few chemicals are registered, while resistant cultivars face the problem of resistance break down; therefore other methods for disease control need to be investigated. The effect of silicon salt as well as increased electrical conductivities against downy mildew was evaluated in four experiments carried out in hydroponically systems, using the cultivar of lettuce “Cobham Green”, known for its susceptibility to the pathogen. Silicon, as potassium silicate, was added at 100 mg l−1 of nutrient solution at three levels of electrical conductivity: 1.5–1.6 mS cm−1 (EC1), 3.0–3.5 mScm−1 (EC2, 0.70 g l−1 NaCl) and 4.0–4.5 mS cm−1 (EC3, 0.95 g l−1 NaCl) respectively. Lettuce plants, grown for 14–20 (trials 1 and 2) and 36–45 (trials 3 and 4) days in the different nutrient solutions tested, were inoculated with B. lactucae conidia with a maximum of two inoculations before final disease assessment carried out 14–21 days after the inoculation able to give symptoms. EC and potassium silicate significantly influenced downy mildew incidence and severity, while their interaction was not a significant factor. The addition to the standard nutrient solution (EC1) of potassium silicate resulted in a significant reduction of downy mildew severity in trials 1 and 2 where plants were artificially inoculated 15 and 20 days after transplanting. This efficacy was slight on plants grown for 36 and 45 days before inoculation in a soil drenched with EC1 amended with potassium silicate. EC2 gave a significantly similar downy mildew reduction than EC2 added with potassium silicate in trial 3. Plants grown for 36 and 45 days at the highest electrical conductivity (EC3) showed a significant reduction in severity of downy mildew compared with that observed at EC2 level. The best results, in terms of disease control, were given by the addition of potassium silicate to the EC3 solution. This combination also led to a significantly increased plant biomass. The possibility and benefits of applying potassium silicate and increased EC amendments in practice is discussed.  相似文献

Plectosphaerella cucumerina has been described recently as the causal agent of a leaf spot on wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia). Eight seed samples of wild rocket obtained from commercial seed lots used for sowing by farms severely affected by P. cucumerina, were assayed for the presence of the pathogen. Isolations were carried out on subsamples of seeds (400) unwashed or disinfected in 1% sodium hypochloride. The pathogenicity of the isolates of P. cucumerina obtained was tested in two trials carried out on wild rocket; four out of eight samples of rocket seeds were contaminated by P. cucumerina. Eleven isolates of P. cucumerina were obtained from 7,200 not disinfected seeds tested, while none was isolated from an equal number of disinfected seeds. All isolates were pathogenic on wild rocket. The results obtained indicate that rocket seeds are a potential source of inoculum for P. cucumerina. The possibility of isolating the pathogen from seeds, albeit from a low percentage of them, supports the hypothesis that the rapid spread of this new disease of rocket recently observed in Italy is due to the use of infected propagation material. Measures for prevention and control of the disease are discussed.  相似文献

This study was undertaken by simulating the effects of increasing the temperature and CO2 values on the incidence and severity of F. equiseti on wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) and radish (Raphanus sativus), under phytotron conditions. Two sets of 3 trials were carried out in which eight different temperature and CO2 combinations were tested:1) 400–450 ppm CO2, 18–22 °C; 2) 800–850 ppm CO2, 18–22 °C; 3) 400–450 ppm CO2, 22–26 °C, 4) 800–850 ppm CO2, 22–26 °C, 5) 400–450 ppm CO2, 26–30 °C; 6) 800–850 ppm CO2, 26–30 °C; 7) 400–450 ppm CO2, 14–18 °C; 8) 800–850 ppm CO2, 14–18 °C. The temperature and CO2 levels were significant factors of influence on disease incidence (DI) and severity (DS) in all the trials, and their combination significantly influenced the DI and DS of F. equiseti leaf spot on both hosts. Disease incidence and severity increased on wild rocket at 850 ppm of CO2, in comparison to 450 ppm, in each tested temperature range. The highest CO2 value on radish, for all the tested temperature regimes, caused an increase in DI and DS, which resulted statistically significant at the highest tested temperature range. The results obtained in this study add more concern to the possible negative effects of the spread of F. equiseti on vegetables in Italy as well as in other areas suffering from increased temperatures as a consequence of climate changes.  相似文献

A CD8+ T-cell leukemia was diagnosed in an aged female rhesus macaque. Although leukemia and lymphoma in nonhuman primates are commonly associated with simian T-lymphotropic virus, gibbon ape leukemia virus, oncogenic herpesviruses, and types C, D, and E retroviruses, this monkey was not infected with any of these viruses. However, the monkey did have antibodies against herpesvirus saimiri. This likely represents cross-reactivity of the herpesvirus saimiri assay with rhesus monkey rhadinovirus (RRV) antibodies; RRV was first described in rhesus macaques that were identified as having antibodies against herpesvirus saimiri. Rhesus rhadinovirus is a gamma herpesvirus, related antigenically to herpesvirus saimiri and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), which have been linked to lymphoproliferative disorders in primates and humans, respectively. Moreover, an oncogene has been recently identified in the RRV genome that is equivalent in position to the herpesvirus saimiri and KSHV oncogenes. Presently, the association of RRV infection with disease in nonhuman primates is unknown.  相似文献

This review concentrates on the situation of soilborne disease management on several vegetable crops with the use of different strategies, including host resistance and grafting, with special focus??based on the experience gained in Italy and Europe??on the practical problems encountered after the phaseout of methyl bromide. Special attention is given to the emergence of new diseases or the re-emergence of old ones on several crops, and on the results and problems encountered by using grafting, biofumigation and other non-chemical control methods. The search for effective, economically and environmentally sound methods for soil and substrate disinfestation remains a continuous and challenging task for growers, despite intensive research. The European Regulation No 1107/2009, concerning the placing of plant protection products on the market and the European Directive No 2009/128/EC, establishing a framework for Community action to achieve the sustainable use of pesticides, requires, by 2014, that all professional users implement the general principles of IPM. Research efforts associated with phaseout of methyl bromide generated new knowledge about the biology, ecology and management of soilborne pathogens and suggested more attention towards crop and soil health.  相似文献

Seven experimental trials were carried out to evaluate the efficacy of the bacterial strains Achromobacter xylosoxydans AM1 and Serratia sp. DM1 obtained from suppressive soils and from soilless used rockwool substrates (Pseudomonas putida FC6B, Pseudomonas sp. FC7B, Pseudomonas putida FC8B, Pseudomonas sp. FC9B and Pseudomonas sp. FC24B) against Fusarium wilt on rocket caused by Fusarium oxysporum ff. spp. raphani and conglutinans. Along with these strains, two commercial bioproducts (RootShield—Trichoderma harzianum T22; Cedomon—Pseudomonas chlororaphis MA342) were also tested. Different application strategies such as soil treatment (trials I to VI; 107 and 108 CFU ml−1) and root dipping (trial VII; 108 and 109 CFU ml−1) were performed in a glasshouse in order to test the efficacy of the bacterial strains against Fusarium oxysporum ff. spp. raphani and conglutinans. The lowest disease incidence (16.7%) was observed with the application of Achromobacter sp. AM1, Serratia sp. DM1 at 108 CFU ml−1 and Pseudomonas sp. FC9B at 107 CFU ml−1 against F. oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans (experiment I). Maximum plant biomass (5.0 g/plant) was registered in Serratia sp. DM1 at 108 CFU ml−1 treated plants in trial IV. The trials against F. oxysporum f. sp. raphani (experiment II) showed that the application of Pseudomonas sp. FC7B, P. putida FC8B at 108 CFU ml−1 and P. chlororaphis MA342 at 7.5 × 106 CFU ml−1 significantly reduced disease incidence to values ranging between 87% and 92%. The highest plant biomass was recorded with the application of Achromobacter sp. AM1 and P. putida FC6B at 107 CFU ml−1 (3.9 to 4.2 g) carried out 7 days before the artificial inoculation of the pathogens (trial IV). The present study showed the potential biocontrol activity of the bacterial strains Achromobacter sp. AM1, Serratia sp. DM1 and Pseudomonas sp. FC9B against F. oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans and of Pseudomonas sp. FC7B, P. putida FC8B, P. chlororaphis MA342, Achromobacter sp. AM1 and P. putida FC6B against F. oxysporum f. sp. raphani. Growth-promoting activity of biocontrol bacteria used during the trials was observed.  相似文献

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lactucae, the causal agent of fusarium wilt of lettuce (Lactuca sativa), occurs in most countries in which lettuce is grown and causes serious economic losses. Three races (1, 2 and 3) of the pathogen have previously been identified on the basis of their ability to cause disease on differential lettuce cultivars, as well as by means of molecular tools developed to characterize different races of this pathogen. Only race 1 has been detected in Europe so far. In this study, two isolates of F. oxysporum, obtained from lettuce plants grown in the Netherlands showing symptoms of wilt, have been characterized by combining the study of pathogenicity with differential cultivars of lettuce and molecular assays to determine whether the isolates are different from the known races of F. oxysporum f. sp. lactucae. This study reports the presence of F. oxysporum f. sp. lactucae for the first time in the Netherlands. The causal pathogen has been identified, using the IRAP‐SCAR technique, as a new race of F. oxysporum f. sp. lactucae. Specific primers have been designed to identify this new race.  相似文献
