1,1,6-Trimethyl-1,2-dihydronaphthalene (TDN) is well-known to contribute "petrol" aromas to aged Riesling wines, but its prevalence and contribution to young Riesling or non-Riesling wines is not well understood. TDN concentrations were measured in 1-3-year-old varietal wines produced from Cabernet franc (n = 14 wines), Chardonnay (17), Cabernet Sauvignon (4), Gewurztraminer (4), Merlot (9), Pinot gris (6), Pinot noir (9), Riesling (28), or Sauvignon blanc (6). TDN concentrations in the Riesling wines, 6.4 ± 3.8 μg/L, were significantly higher than in all other varietals, 1.3 ± 0.8 μg/L. The odor detection thresholds for TDN were then determined in both model wine and a neutral white wine. Group sensory thresholds were found to be the same in both matrices, 2 μg/L, indicating little masking of TDN due to the odorants in the neutral white. The TDN sensory threshold was a factor of 10 below the previously reported odor threshold. On the basis of this revised threshold, 27 of 28 Riesling wines had suprathreshold TDN, whereas only 7 of 69 non-Riesling wines had suprathreshold TDN. The monoterpenes linalool and geraniol were also measured in the Riesling wines, and odor activity values (OAVs) were calculated for the monoterpenes and TDN. The OAV for TDN was higher than for the monoterpenes in 25 of 28 Riesling wines.  相似文献

Three diploid citrus somatic hybrids (cybrids) were produced by fusions combining nucellar callus-derived protoplasts of Willow Leaf mandarin (Citrus deliciosa Ten.) and Commune clementine (Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan.) with, respectively, leaf protoplasts of Eureka lemon [Citrus limon (L.) Burm.] and Marumi kumquat [Fortunella japonica (Thunb.) Swing.] and leaf protoplasts of Marumi kumquat. Ploidy and origins of the nuclear, chloroplastic, and mitochondrial genomes were investigated by flow cytometry and nuclear and cytoplasmic simple sequence repeat analyses. Volatile compounds were extracted from the leaves of the three cybrids by a pentane/ether (1:1) mixture, analyzed by GC-MS, and compared to those of their parents. The cybrids were found to be very close to their nucleus-giving parent, suggesting that the main information for volatile compounds biosynthesis is contained in the nucleus. However, nucleo-cytoplasmic interactions occurred: the (mandarin + lemon) cybrid, possessing nucleus and chloroplasts of lemon and mitochondria from mandarin, synthesizes more monoterpene alcohols and esters than its nucleus-giving parent; the (clementine + kumquat) cybrid, possessing nucleus from kumquat and organelles from mandarin, synthesizes more monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and sesquiterpene alcohols than its nucleus-giving parent.  相似文献

Sensory texture attributes of cooked rice from two cultivars (Bengal and Cypress) harvested in 1997 (56 samples) were predicted using extrusion and compression tests along with spectral stress strain analysis. Predictive models for each of nine sensory texture attributes studied were evaluated using force values from the instrumental tests in conjunction with partial least squares regression. All sensory attributes were well predicted using both the extrusion and compression tests (relative ability of prediction > 0.70). However, the extrusion test consistently provided more accurate and discriminative predicted models (root mean square error of prediction < 0.55, Stot/RMSEP > 2.0). Spectral stress strain analysis predictive models for adhesiveness to lips and hardness were explained.  相似文献

Summary The salt tolerance of mature Santa Rosa plum trees was assessed on 20-year-old trees grown in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The experimental design consisted of six levels of irrigation water salinity (electrical conductivities of 0.3 to 8 dS/m) replicated five times with each replication consisting of ten trees. Salinity treatments imposed in March 1984 did not influence tree yields harvested in June 1984. In 1985, the second year of treatments, yield from the highest salt treatment (electrical conductivity of irrigation water, EC i , of 8 dS/m) was reduced by half; the number of fruit harvested was reduced 40%, and fruit size was reduced significantly. Foliar damage was so severe by the end of 1985 that nonsaline water was applied to the two highest salt treatments (EC i = 6 and 8 dS/m) in an attempt to restore tree vigor. In 1986 salt effects had become progressively worse on the continuing saline treatments. A linear piece-wise salt tolerance curve is presented for soil salinity values, expressed as the electrical conductivity of saturated extracts (EC e ) integrated to a soil depth of 1.2 m over a 2-year period. The salt tolerance threshold for relative yield (Y r ) based on 3 years of data was 2.6 dS/m and yield reduction at salinity levels beyond the threshold was 31% per dS/m (Y ir=100 – 31 [EC e – 2.6]j). Significant foliar damage occurred when leaf chloride concentrations surpassed 200 mmol/kg of leaf dry weight (0.7%). Sodium concentrations in the leaves remained below 10 mmol/kg (0.02%) until foliar damage became severe. This suggests that chloride was the dominant ion causing foliar damage.  相似文献

Summary The salt tolerance of guayule (Parthenium argentatum Gray cv. N565-II) was tested in small held plots (silty clay soil) in the Imperial Valley of California. Seedlings were transplanted in October 1981. Differential salination was begun in March 1982 and continued for 4 years by irrigating with waters salinized with NaCl and CaCl2 (1:1 by wt.) to obtain electrical conductivities of 0.8, 1.4, 3, 6, 9, and 12 dS/m. Dry matter, rubber, and resin yields were determined from pollarded plants in February 1984 and uprooted plants in February 1985 and 1986. Rubber concentrations in the woody branches in 1984 and 1985 averaged 6.1 and 7.3%, respectively on a dry weight basis and were not significantly affected by soil salinity. Resin concentrations averaged 8.6% and 7.3% for the two years. In 1986, both rubber and resin concentrations decreased with increased salinity. Rubber and resin concentrations in the root crowns were approximately one percentage point less than those of the shoot. Dry matter and resin yields were not affected by salinity until the time- and depth-averaged electrical conductivity of the saturated-soil extracts ( ) taken from the rootzone (0–90 cm) exceeded 8.7 dS/m. Above 8.7 dS/m, both yields decreased 11.6% per dS/m increase in . Rubber yields decreased 10.8% per dS/m above a threshold of 7.8 dS/m. Plant mortality rather than growth reduction at high levels of salinity appears to be the limiting factor for rubber production from irrigated guayule.  相似文献

Summary This study was conducted to determine the conditions and causes of foliar salt absorption and injury from sprinkler irrigation with saline water. Bell pepper plants (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Yolo Wonder B) grown in covered nutrient solution cultures in the greenhouse were sprinkled daily with NaCl and CaCl2 waters for up to 10 weeks. Unsprinkled plants grown in nonsaline, and in one experiment, saline cultures were compared with plants sprinkled with waters containing different concentrations of NaCl and/or CaCl2. Both the frequency and duration of sprinkling (up to 32 min each day) were tested.The results showed that Ca2+, Na+, and Cl were readily absorbed through the leaves at rates that were essentially linear functions of salt concentration and duration of sprinkling. Increasing frequency of sprinkling increased salt uptake and injury more than increasing duration. Sprinkling with either NaCl or CaCl2 waters was more toxic to pepper than mixtures of the two salts. Although CaCl2 was more toxic than NaCl, low concentrations of Ca2+ ameliorated the detrimental effects of NaCl waters. Foliar analyses indicated that leaf injury was not correlated with Cl accumulation. On May 2, 2009 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency notified the World Organization for Animal Health that an emerging novel influenza A virus (pandemic H1N1 2009) had been confirmed on a swine farm in Alberta. Over a 4-week period pigs in this farrow-to-finish operation were clinically affected by respiratory disease consistent with an influenza A virus infection and the presence of active viral infection was confirmed in all production areas by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Despite clinical recovery of animals, there was reluctance by purchasers to receive animals from this operation due to concerns about the effect on both domestic and international markets. The owner decided to depopulate the entire herd due to impending welfare issues associated with overcrowding and economic concerns resulting from the inability to market these animals. Carcasses were rendered or composted and did not enter the human food or animal feed chain. The source of virus in this herd was determined to be an infected human. Zoonotic transmission to 2 individuals responding to the outbreak was suspected and recommendations to prevent occupational exposure are discussed.  相似文献

Background

Since 1999, field evidence of transplacental infection by porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and reproductive failure has been reported in pigs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical and pathological consequences of PCV2 infection in conventional PCV2-seropositive gilts by insemination with PCV2b-spiked semen.

Results

Six PCV2 seropositive gilts were inseminated with PCV2b-supplemented semen (infected) and three animals with semen and cell culture medium (controls). Only three out of the six infected animals were pregnant by ultrasonography on day 29 after insemination, while two out of the three controls were pregnant. One control gilt aborted on day 23 after insemination but not due to PVC2. Viraemia was demonstrated in four out of six infected and in one control gilt that became infected with PCV2a. Anti-PCV2 antibody titres showed dynamic variations in the infected group throughout the study. Among infected gilts, the animal with the lowest anti-PCV2 titre (1/100) at the beginning of the experiment and another that reached a similar low value during the experiment showed evident seroconversion over time and had also PCV2 positive foetuses. One placenta displayed mild focal necrosis of the chorionic epithelium positively stained by immunohistochemistry for PCV2 antigen.

Conclusions

PCV2-seropositive gilts can be infected with PCV2 after intrauterine exposure and low maternal antibody titre may increase the probability of a foetal infection.  相似文献

Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 20 antimicrobial agents for 41 isolates of Burkholderia mallei from natural outbreaks of equine glanders were determined by agar dilution. All isolates were intrinsically resistant to ampicillin (MIC90 ≥128). Resistance to other antimicrobials was as follows: 95.1% to amoxicillin and cephradine, 85.4% to cefuroxime and norfloxacin, 68.3% to ceftizoxime and ceftriaxone, 61.1% to ceftiofur, 58.5% to oxytetracycline, 41.5% to ciprofloxacin, 58.5% to roxithromycin, 17.1% cefotaxime, and 12.2% clarithromycin. Overall resistance patterns revealed that 17% of isolates were simultaneously resistant to amoxicillin, cephradine, cefuroxime, ceftizoxime, ceftriaxone and norfloxacin. None of the isolates were resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, doxycycline, chloramphenicol, gentamicin or trimethoprim-sulphadiazine. Mode MICs for these antimicrobials were 2, 1, 8, 4 and 1 μg/ml, respectively. A majority of the isolates (∼ 94%) were susceptible to both enrofloxacin and ofloxacin. These data provide an updated perspective on susceptibility profiles of current strains of B. mallei in an endemic area.  相似文献
