Because individual species can play key roles, the loss of species through extinction or their gain through colonization can cause major changes in ecosystems. For almost 20 years after kangaroo rats were experimentally removed from a Chihuahuan desert ecosystem in the United States, other rodent species were unable to compensate and use the available resources. This changed abruptly in 1995, when an alien species of pocket mouse colonized the ecosystem, used most of the available resources, and compensated almost completely for the missing kangaroo rats. These results demonstrate the importance of individual species and of colonization and extinction events in the structure and dynamics of ecosystems.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in 1967 and 1968 in which HerefordXFriesian (Experiment 1) and Friesian (Experiment 2) steer calves horn in April were turned out to graze at one week or 3 months of age, respectively, and maintained at three stocking densities in the ratio 1:2:3 animals per unit area. The calves grazed paddocks of S23 perennial ryegrass in rotation, and were moved when the height of grazed stubble at the medium stocking density was reduced to 8 cm. The rate of liveweight gain and herbage intake per head declined as stocking rate increased. When the results of the two experiments were compared, the weight gain of the calves was more closely related to the weight of herbage residues than to the height of the grazed sward. The rate of liveweight gain was depressed when the amount of herhage left after grazing fell helow 2000–2500 kg OM/ha (1800–2250 Ib/ac).  相似文献

Texture determinations were made with a Food Technology Corporation shear press on Russet Burbank and Norgold tubers as they grew and developed from July 1 until October 15, 1970. Shear force reading increased as Russet Burbank tubers grew and increased in dry matter content. However, no increase in shear force was obtained with growth and development of the Norgold variety. Tubers harvested in the Fall were placed in 48 F storage and separated into specific gravity groups in increments of 0.005 with a brine solution. As specific gravity of the Russet Burbank variety increased, shear force readings also increased. Shear force of the Norgold Russet did not change with specific gravity changes. A very high correlation was obtained between raw shear force readings of specific gravity groups (Russet Burbank) and processed frozen french, fries of the same lots which were finish fried and shear force readings made within 3 minutes after removal from the fryer. Again, the correlation between raw shear force readings and finish fry readings of Norgold Russet was very poor, although the finish fry product readings increased as specific gravity increased.  相似文献

In pastoral farming systems, pasture production normally exceeds demand in the spring–summer period. Consequently, conserving forage at this time for use during the following winter is a widespread practice. The objective of this study was to assess the possible advantages of incorporating flexibility into a calendar‐based haymaking policy. A range of flexible haymaking strategies were simulated and compared against a calendar‐based strategy by using a simulation model to estimate long‐term performance of cow‐calf farm systems under each strategy. The results suggest that controlling haymaking in a flexible fashion, basing the decisions of closing, releasing and cutting paddocks on a simple pasture budget, could give the system productive advantages over using a calendar‐based approach. In terms of liveweight production per hectare, compared at the same area harvested, the flexible approach had higher average annual calf liveweight production (an increase of up to 0.15) and lower system variability [a reduction of 0.10 in the coefficient of variation (CV)] depending on the stocking rate. The results indicated that allocating more than 0.50–0.60 of the farm area to conservation would only be advantageous at very high stocking rates. In contrast to the calendar‐based strategy, making more hay than required for the immediate next winter, where possible, can reduce system variability.  相似文献

A method was developed for estimating tuber yield losses caused by late blight of potato (Phytophthora infestans) (Mont.) de Bary. The method is based on yield and disease data collected for the varieties Green Mountain and Katahdin grown in eastern Canada during the period 1953–1970. The percentage yield loss can be calculated for any disease progress curve. The estimated loss was within 5% of the actual loss in nine cases out of ten.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of levels of supplementation with maize grain and herbage allowance (HA) on grass herbage and maize intake, animal performance and grazing behaviour in two replicated grazing experiments with Angus beef cattle in Argentina. In Experiment 1, the response to increasing HA (2·5, 5·0 and 7·5 kg DM herbage 100 kg?1 live weight (LW) d?1 with and without 0·5 kg DM maize grain 100 kg?1 LW d?1) was investigated. In Experiment 2, the responses to level of maize grain offered (0, 0·5 and 1·0 kg DM maize grain 100 kg?1 LW d?1) at an HA of 2·5 kg DM herbage 100 kg?1 LW d?1 and an HA of 5·0 kg 100 kg?1 LW d?1 without maize grain were assessed. In Experiment 2, soyabean meal was added to control the crude protein concentration in the diet. Two methods were used for intake estimations: pre‐ and post‐feeding herbage mass difference, and the use of the n‐alkane and 13C technique. The latter predicted most accurately the metabolizable energy requirements calculated from live weights and liveweight gain of beef cattle attained in each treatment in both experiments. Increasing HA significantly increased herbage intake and liveweight gain (P < 0·01), and general quadratic relationships between these variables could be fitted across experiments despite differences in animal and pasture characteristics. Increasing the amount of maize grain offered significantly reduced herbage intake and grazing time, but increased liveweight gain and digestibility of the diet. Substitution rate increased with increasing HA in Experiment 1 but was not affected by level of maize supplementation in Experiment 2. These relationships will aid the development of grazing management models for Argentinean conditions.  相似文献

Patch selection by grazing dairy cows in response to simultaneous variation in combinations of sward structural characteristics was examined in three experiments in which four mature dairy cows were offered a choice of patches (typically 0.9 m × 0.9 m) of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) presented in a linear arrangement. Treatments involved combinations of variations in sward height, stubble height and/or depth of regrowth, prepared by preliminary cutting treatments. They were arranged in balanced sets of four to nine treatments, which were arranged in linear sequences of eighteen to twenty‐seven patches. Within experiments, sequences were balanced across replicate sets of patches, which were grazed separately by individual cows. The number of bites removed and the residence time for each patch were highly correlated in all three experiments, and the results are reported using number of bites per patch as an estimator of foraging behaviour. In the first experiment, with vegetative swards, cows preferentially selected the tallest swards. When swards comprising reproductive stem were offered in Experiment 2, cows selectively grazed short‐stubble swards rather than tall‐stubble swards, although both offered a similar depth of regrowth. Cows did not exhibit preference for swards comprising the greatest quantity of leaf mass, indicating that the spatial distribution of plant components assumed greater importance. In the third experiment, the number of bites removed increased with increasing depth of regrowth, and was negatively correlated with sward height. The three patch‐appraisal cues investigated were broadly ranked in order of importance as (i) depth of regrowth, (ii) sward maturity and (iii) sward height. There was no evidence, at least at a short temporal scale, that patch behaviour was influenced by conditions in adjacent patches, suggesting that the cows assessed grazing opportunities on a patch‐by‐patch basis.  相似文献

Effects of different grazing frequencies and intensities on herbage production (on both a unit pasture and individual plant basis) and on persistence of chicory ( Cichorium intybus L. cv. Grasslands Puna) were studied at Palmerston North, New Zealand (latitude 40°23'S) from November 1994 to November 1995. Three experiments were conducted on the same chicory stand, sown on 12 May 1994. The main grazing experiment had two grazing intensities, hard-lax grazing (50- to 100-mm stem stubble to mid-January, and thereafter 100- to 150-mm stem stubble) and lax grazing (100- to 150-mm stem stubble), and three grazing frequencies (1-, 2- or 4-week intervals). A subsidiary plant survival experiment compared the survival of 120 marked plants in ungrazed and grazed treatments. A late autumn grazing experiment examined the effects on plant persistence in the following spring. The greatest herbage mass (leaf + stem) resulted from the 4-week grazing frequency [9640 ± 874 kg dry matter (DM) ha−1], in which stem mass was reasonably low (1270 ± 410 kg DM ha−1), but was significantly higher in the 4-week grazing frequency than 1- and 2-week grazing frequencies ( P < 0·01). Grazing intensity had no significant effect except on the average stem mass of individual plants when the hard-lax intensity gave a lower stem mass ( P < 0·01). There were no interactions between grazing frequency and intensity in herbage mass. Plant density declined by 35% over the growing season with the decline unaffected by grazing intensity or frequency during the season. Grazing in late autumn resulted in approximately 27% less plants the following spring. It was concluded that grazing management through the growing season cannot be used to improve persistence without compromising leaf growth rate, but that avoidance of grazing late autumn will improve the persistence of chicory.  相似文献
