Aroma release and delivery following the consumption of beverages

Processes controlling aroma release and delivery during and after the consumption of a beverage were studied using real-time physiological and aroma release measurements. The key processes were as follows. During swallowing, a portion of the buccal gas phase was transferred first to the throat and then to the nasal passages via the tidal breath flow. This mechanism accounted for the sharp pulse of aroma seen at the beginning of the swallow breath and on subsequent swallows. The persistence effect was due to liquid-air partition from beverage coated on the throat and was dependent on the concentration of volatile compounds in the beverage. Lipid in the beverage caused a decrease in the intensity of volatile compounds on the breath, but the presence of a thickening agent had no effect on persistence.     

Pharmacokinetics of pioglitazone after multiple oral dose administration in horses

Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione class of antidiabetic agent with proven efficacy in increasing insulin sensitivity in humans with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, a syndrome of insulin resistance sharing similarities with equine metabolic syndrome. The purpose of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of pioglitazone in adult horses following multiple oral dose administration. Pioglitazone hydrochloride (1 mg/kg) was administered orally for 11 doses at 24-h intervals, and plasma samples were collected. Initially, a pilot study was performed using one horse; and thereafter the drug was administered to six horses. Samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry, and pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated using noncompartmental modeling. The maximum plasma concentration was 509.1 ± 413.5 ng/mL achieved at 1.88 ± 1.39 h following oral administration of the first dose, and 448.1 ± 303.5 ng/mL achieved at 2.83 ± 1.81 h (mean ± SD) following the eleventh dose. Apparent elimination half-life was 9.94 ± 4.57 and 9.63 ± 5.33 h after the first and eleventh dose, respectively. This study showed that in healthy horses, pioglitazone administered at a daily oral dose of 1 mg/kg results in plasma concentrations and total drug exposure approximating, but slightly below, those considered therapeutic in humans.     

Correction of angular limb deformities in foals: A review

Angular limb deformities may result in permanent impairment of the foal, if not corrected early. Due to the simplicity of the approach and the effectiveness of hemicircumferential transection and periosteal stripping, the general practitioner can benefit from this technique. In most cases where this procedure is applicable, correction of the angular limb deformity is achieved. Overcorrection does not appear to be a problem.     

Pyrethroid insecticides derived from 2,2′ -bridged biphenyl-3-ylmethanols

The addition of a hydrocarbon bridge between the 2- and 2′-positions in biphenyl constrains the twist angle between the two phenyl rings to fairly small limits. It has been found that the biological activity of a series of pyrethroid esters, of hydrocarbon bridged biphenyl-3-ylmethanols and of heterocyclic hydrocarbonbridged biphenyl analogues, changes with the length of the bridge. The optimum activity and the maximum biological activity spectrum were found for the esters of three-carbon bridged alcohols. The relationship of the activity to the twist angle for these bridged esters was compared with the activity and spectrum of a series of biphenyl and heterocyclic biphenyl analogues previously reported. A parallel exists between the two series. The optimum twist angle between the aromatic rings of the alcohols, in both the bridged and free rotating analogues, is around 50°. Pyrethroid esters showing the highest activity were produced from 6, 7-dihydro-5H-dibenzo-[a,c]cyclohepten-4-ylmethanol. The biological activity of a series of pyrethroid esters of this alcohol is also reported.     

Chemoprophylaxis of cryptosporidiosis in chickens, using halofuginone, salinomycin, lasalocid, or monensin

Chemoprophylaxis of Cryptosporidium baileyi infections was attempted by feeding 4 groups of chicks diets containing 3 mg of halofuginone/kg of feed, 60 mg of salinomycin/kg, 75 mg of lasalocid/kg, or 110 mg of monensin/kg. Rations were fed 5 days before oral or intratracheal inoculation with oocysts and were continued for 20 days. None of the drugs prevented C baileyi infections. Clinical signs of respiratory tract disease and gross lesions of airsacculitis were observed in intratracheally inoculated birds in all treatment groups and nonmedicated controls. Orally inoculated birds did not develop clinical signs of infection. Pathogenic bacteria were not isolated from the respiratory tract systems of any chicks. Halofuginone delayed the establishment of infections of the bursa of Fabricius and cloaca, but not of the trachea.
