The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of beak trimming age on performance criteria, H-L ratio, antibody production, the percentage of spleen and liver and external appearance. The chicks (Barred Rock) were randomly divided into 4 beak-trimming groups (non-trimmed (control), a trim at 1 d (1D), at 10 d (10D) and at 10 wk (10W)), each of 132 chicks. There were 6 replicate cages at beak trimming groups at rearing period. At 18 wk of age a total of 144 pullets were transferred to the layer house, and the pullets were housed at 323 and 646 cm2/hen with 8 and 4 birds per cage in three-deck layer cages. There were a total of 24 replications with 12 replications equally divided between the high and low density cages, and the beak trimmed treatments were randomly and equally divided within each density. As a result of this experiment differences among groups in body weight in rearing phase were disappear in the laying phase. Low feather condition was found in untrimmed hens. H-L ratio in both pullet and laying phase was higher in hens of untrimmed groups. Cage area affected all examined parameters except that body weight, mortality rate, cracked, broken and unshell egg rates, shell breaking, shape index, shell thickness, meat-blood spot rates, spleen and liver percentages, throat injures and antibody production to SRBC.  相似文献

Among other factors the nutrient utilization of a cow is influenced by its individual physiological and genetic predisposition. There are large differences within cows in the manner of partition of the nutrients that may affect the size and activity of the individual organs and the whole body composition. High genetic merit dairy cows have a higher potential rate of protein excretion than medium genetic merit dairy cows even when energy and protein intake are equal. Medium genetic merit dairy cows show higher potential rates of protein and fat deposition of the body. This phenomenon was partly explained by the regulatory functions of the hormone insulin (see Brockman and Laarveld 1986; Broucek et al. 1991; Wylie et al. 1998). Additionally, it is widely considered that the somatotropic axis [growth hormone, growth hormone releasing factor and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I)], could be involved, as one of the key control and balance mechanisms which regulate the partition of nutrients (Breier and Sauerwein 1995; Schams 1995; Knight 1997). Several studies have provided insights into the physiological action of these and further hormones, transport proteins and enzymes, e.g. the erythrocyte-type glucose transporter, the insulin-responsive glucose transporter or the glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and indicate that these molecules may affect nutrient repartitioning and utilization as well as milk yield, growth and fat accumulation (Mathews et al. 1988; Bauman and Vernon 1993; Burton et al. 1994; Girard et al. 1994; Binelli et al. 1995; Zhao et al. 1996; Abe et al. 1997). However, the mechanisms of regulation of most of these processes are insufficiently known. This paper presents a comparison of mRNA patterns of tissues potentially associated with protein and energy turnover in lactating cows of different metabolic types. The technique of differential display of messenger RNA species originally described by Liang and Pardee (1992), has already been applied as a powerful tool for cloning genes that are differentially expressed in various tissues or under altered conditions in the same tissue (e.g. Liang et al. 1993; Aiello et al. 1994; Li et al. 1994; Nishio et al. 1994). This method was applied to characterize the expression patterns in 12 tissues of three cows with divergent metabolic types (milk type, meat/milk type, and meat type) by the display of differentially and identically expressed cDNA bands. The aims of this exploratory study were first to indicate which of the 12 tissues analysed are mainly involved in trait differentiation according to their differentially displayed mRNA patterns. Secondly, the results of this study represent the prerequisite for the identification of tissue-specific expressed sequence tags in general, and individual or type-dependent differentially expressed sequence tags in particular.  相似文献

A hypochromic microcytic iron deficiency anemia associated with light underfur and increased mortality in mink kits is caused by the feeding of various species of raw marine fish, especially coalfish (Gadus virens) and whiting (Gadus merlangus) as first detected in Norway by Helgebostad (1957). The same disorder caused by fish-feeding was later described from other countries (Stout et al. 1960, Jørgensen & Christensen 1966, Kangas et al. 1967). Nutritional anemia has also been induced in rats by feeding a raw coalfish diet as stated by Gjønnes & Helgebostad (1965).  相似文献

The effects of an enriched environment on growth, meat quality, and muscle biological traits were investigated using 64 castrated pigs (age range 7 to 20 weeks). Positive emotional appraisal was induced by a system that acoustically frequently called individuals out of a group (n=32) to a feeding station, where they were rewarded with small portions of feed. The results were compared with traditional fed pigs (Control; n = 32). There was no environmental effect on live weight and lean muscle percentage. However, the stimulating keeping regime reduced the intramuscular fat content of the M. longissimus by 0.2 % and increased the protein content by 0.5 %. Moreover, the drip loss of M. longissimus was 1.1 % lower in the treatment group. The analysis of muscle fibre traits (biopsy samples of M. longissimus) showed a 7 % higher proportion of oxidative muscle fibres in the pigs reared in the enriched environment. This fibre type showed a tendency to increased fibre areas. These findings indicate a higher oxidative capacity of the muscle. However, the activity of the inarker enzyme citrate synthase (CS) was not influenced and the activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was even increased compared to the control animals.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of diet on the distribution of phospholipid classes and fatty acid profiles of individual phospholipid classes in longissimus muscle of beef. An experiment was established to examine the effect of pasture-based versus concentrate diet offered to two different breeds (German Holstein and German Simmental bulls) to enhance the content of beneficial fatty acids in beef and improve the meat quality for the consumer. High-performance thin-layer chromatography was utilized to separate the phospholipid classes. The fatty acid composition of the individual phospholipid classes was determined by gas chromatography. The main phospholipid classes in the muscle were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine, representing approximately 60% of the total phospholipids, followed by phosphatidylinositol ranging between 11.8 and 14.8%. The results have shown that the fatty acid profiles in the detected seven phospholipid classes can be affected by different feeding systems. Pasture-based feeding resulted in an enrichment of total and individual n-3 fatty acids in all phospholipid classes of muscle lipids of bulls compared with those fed on concentrate. In contrast, pasture-based diet significantly decreased the proportion of total and individual n-6 fatty acids in phospholipid classes, except in the sphingomyelin fraction. The total saturated fatty acid proportions in the phospholipid classes were different and ranged between 4.5% in the cardiolipin fraction and 50.5% in the sphingomyelin fraction of muscle lipids of bulls. Furthermore, the diet effects on the saturated fatty acid proportion in the different phospholipid classes differ widely. The results have shown that the C18:1 trans and CLA profiles in the detected seven phospholipid classes can be affected by different feeding systems.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of maternal treatment with porcine somatotropin (pST) during early gestation on embryonic survival, fetal development, and internal environment for fetal growth. Sixty-two crossbred gilts received daily injections of either 3 mL of a placebo (control, n = 31) or 6 mg of pST (n = 31) from d 10 to 27 of gestation. Representative gilts were slaughtered on d 28, 37, and 62 of gestation. The remaining gilts were allowed to farrow. It was found that embryonic survival was not influenced by pST treatment (P > 0.10). However, pST affected the growth and composition of the maternal (endometrium) and fetal (chorion) parts of the placenta. Thus, endometrial RNA concentration tended to be increased by pST at d 37 (P = 0.15), and it was increased at d 62 (P < 0.05) of gestation, which is indicative of increased capacity for protein synthesis. At birth, placental chorion weight (P < 0.10) and contents of DM and protein (P < 0.05) were increased due to pST treatment, but no effects were detectable up to d 62 of gestation. Maternal pST treatment was effective at increasing nutrient supply to the embryo as suggested from elevated glucose concentrations in amniotic and allantoic fluids (P < 0.05) at d 28 of gestation. With regard to prenatal growth, embryonic DNA concentration was slightly elevated at d 28 (P < 0.10), but pST did not induce any changes in average embryonic, fetal, or neonatal weights. However, within litters, the birth weights of piglets in the 25% lowest weight group (LW) were increased by pST treatment vs control LW pigs (1,241+/-55 vs 1,099+/-59 g, P < 0.10). Thirty-eight neonates from 15 litters divided among the three weight groups were examined for body composition. The weight of the intestinal tract was increased above average after maternal pST treatment (P < 0.01). Additionally, the amounts of tissues such as bone (P = 0.12) and s.c. fat (P = 0.06), and of protein, fat (P = 0.10), and ash (P < 0.05) were increased, whereas the relative body composition remained unchanged by pST (P > 0.10). On average, muscle protein concentration was elevated due to pST (P < 0.01), and, in LW piglets, plasma IGF-I concentration was increased (P < 0.10). The results suggest that maternal somatotropin is a critical factor in early pregnancy capable of influencing placental nutrient transfer and placental growth. It thereby selectively improves the growth conditions for the smaller littermates.  相似文献

Growth- and breed-related changes of marbling characteristics in cattle   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objective of this study was to investigate the growth- and breed-related changes of marbling characteristics in cattle. Four cattle breeds with different growth impetus and muscularity were reared and slaughtered under experimental conditions. German Angus, as a typical beef cattle; Galloway, as a smaller, environmentally resistant beef cattle; Holstein-Friesian, as a dairy-type cattle; and double-muscled Belgian Blue, as an extreme type for muscle growth, were used. These 4 breeds were expected to have differences in muscle development and i.m. fat deposition. Between 5 and 15 bulls of each breed were slaughtered at 2, 4, 6, 12, or 24 mo of age. Marbling characteristics were determined and classified in LM and semitendinosus muscle by computerized image analysis. Among breeds, differences appeared in the quantity, structure, and distribution of the marbling flecks in both muscles. The deposition of fat in the double-muscled Belgian Blue bulls remained substantially inferior to that of the other breeds, up to the age of 24 mo. Marbling in German Angus bulls particularly showed larger (P < 0.05) marbling fleck areas. Galloway cattle had the greatest (P < 0.05) number and the most regular (P < 0.05) distribution of the marbling flecks in young animals. Furthermore, for marbling characteristics in Holstein-Friesian animals, a great number and slightly finer structure were observed compared with the other breeds investigated. Postnatal growth-related changes of marbling in LM were characterized by as much as a 40-fold increase in the number of marbling flecks from 2 to 24 mo of age but also by up to a 4-fold enlargement in the area of the marbling flecks. The structure of marbling flecks was determined by 2 development trends. On the one hand, the marbling flecks became larger (P < 0.05), and the structure became coarser, which was reflected by an increasing (P < 0.01) proportion of long marbling flecks as well as an increasing (P < 0.01) maximum skeleton line length. On the other hand, continually new small, round marbling flecks appeared. This caused a decrease (P < 0.01) in the proportion of the 3 largest marbling fleck areas. The distribution of the marbling flecks became more regular (P < 0.05) with increasing proportion and number of marbling flecks. The results suggest that hyperplasia of adipocytes plays an important role in marbling during growth of muscle in cattle.  相似文献

To estimate the direct and correlated responses in meatiness and meat quality, simulated selection was applied using one‐trait selection and index selection including muscle fibre traits. In a total of 2024 pigs of German Landrace, Large White, Leicoma, and Schwerfurter breeds, carcass composition, meat quality, and fibre characteristics of the M. longissimus lumborum were analysed and genetic parameters were calculated by using REML variance component estimation. Coefficients of heritability ranged from low to moderate (growth traits: h2 = 0.22–0.32; meat quality traits: h2 = 0.17–0.27; muscle fibre traits: h2 = 0.12–0.20). The total fibre number and the frequency of white fibres correlated positively with live weight (rg = 0.44 and 0.44, respectively) and with loin muscle area (rg = 0.38 and 0.19, respectively) while the relationships to pH value and drip loss were not as close (rg = ?0.29–0.19). Selection indices were constructed from live weight and muscle area, from pH value and drip loss, and from muscle structure traits. As expected, simulated selection for live weight or loin muscle area lead to direct positive effects but these were associated with negative effects on meat quality traits (selection intensities: SI = 0.1; 0.5). Using selection for an index from loin area and muscle structure (loin muscle area + total fibre number – frequency of white fibres – frequency of giant fibres) the adverse effect on meat quality was minimized (responses in pH value: ?0.05; ?0.01) or was changed towards desired direction (responses in drip loss: ?0.65%; ?0.26%). The results show that fibre characteristics of pig muscle can be used as selection criteria for simultaneous improvement of carcass composition and meat quality in pigs by including indices developed from performance and fibre traits.  相似文献
