In mammals, long bones are formed by ossification of a cartilaginous mould during early stages of development, through the formation of structures called the primary ossification centre, the secondary ossification centres (SOCs) and the physeal cartilages (PCs). The PC is responsible for long bone growth. The morphology of the PC and the SOCs varies during different stages of femoral growth. In this respect, several details involving the process of murine femoral development are lacking. In the present study, a morphological characterization of femur development from the embryonic period to adulthood in mice was studied using micro‐computed tomography (micro‐CT). To achieve this aim, femora were collected at embryonic day (E) 14.5, E16.5 and E18.5 and at postnatal day (P)1, P7, P14, P35, P46 and P52. CT images were obtained using a micro‐CT scanner (X‐SkyScan 1172; Micro Photonics) and analysed using the micro‐CT 3D visualization software Mimics (Materialise NV, Leuven, Belgium) and NRecon (Micro Photonics). The results of the present study revealed that the femur and its PCs and SOCs undergo morphological changes during different stages of development, including changes in their shape as well as position and thickness. These changes may be due to the response of the femur to mechanical loads imposed by muscle surrounding the bone during these stages of development. The result of the present study is important to improve our knowledge related to ossification and growth patterns of mouse femur during development. 相似文献

Abstract— Most marine fish larviculture is dependent on the culture and nutritional manipulation of live prey, of which the rotifers Brachionus sp. are one of the most commonly used. The particular reproductive characteristics of gilthead seabream Spus aurata L. lead to an egg overproduction in commercial hatcheries, where the excess is normally wasted. This study was developed with the objective of testing seabream eggs as an enrichment product for Brachionus sp., using as control the commercial product Algamac 2000×. In view of the need to preserve and store the eggs produced in excess, freezedrying was examined as a possible technical solution for this purpose. The fatty acid profiles of the tested enrichment products (fresh seabream eggs, freeze-dried eggs and Algamac 2000×), as well as of the enriched rotifers at 0 h and after 3,6,12, 15, 18 and 24 h of enrichment, were analyzed. Freeze-dried eggs were stored for 14 and 58 wk prior to analysis, in order to examine a potential deterioration of the fatty acid nutritional quality. A potential use of seabream eggs as an enrichment product for Brachionus sp. was demonstrated. Rotifers enriched with eggs, fresh and freeze-dried, presented relatively high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA; × C20 and 2 double bonds), and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), a docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)/eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) ratio of about 2 and a fairly high (n-3)/(n-6) ratio, especially during the first 3-6 h of enrichment. When freeze-dried eggs were stored in a dry atmosphere during 14 and 58 wk, only a slight and nonsignificant decrease was noted in the fatty acid content over this period of time. Healthy growth of serially subcultured callus of the grape Vitis vinifera cultivar ‘Sylvaner’ was obtained by incubation at 30° C in continuous light in a defined culture medium containing 2% w/v sucrose, 1.0 mg l?1 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 0.2 mg l?1 kinetin (K). Organogenesis was not induced in this callus by alteration in the absolute or relative levels of NAA and K.Continued shoot initiation was obtained by culture of axillary buds in a medium containing 10?5 M Benzyladenine (BA). The effect of photodynamic therapy is a function of several variables, including selective retention of the drug in tumor tissue with reduced drug concentration in surrounding normal tissue. A study was designed to determine the pharmacokinetic profile and variability of porfimer sodium in dogs and cats with spontaneous tumors and to thereby determine the optimal timing of its photoactivation in these species. The results of this study indicate that there is marked variability among species in the distribution of porfimer sodium between highly proliferating tissues, which requires careful attention in the design of human and veterinary application of photodynamic therapy with porfimer sodium, as determined in rodent models. 相似文献

Indirect evidence is presented that human disturbances are having a profound effect on reproductive efforts of Larus occidentalis livens at several colonies in the Gulf of California. Breeding adults that lose their eggs or chicks apparently practise conspecific predation whether or not humans are present, thus increasing effects of human intrusions. These combined effects could lead to a severe decline in numbers or even pose a threat to the survival of this endemic population, if human disturbance is widespread. Attempts to assess breeding success throughout the Gulf seem warranted and, if necessary, some action to regulate human contact may be essential. 相似文献

Since the mass mortality of the urchin Diadema antillarum in 1983, parrotfishes have become the dominant grazer on Caribbean reefs. The grazing capacity of these fishes could be impaired if marine reserves achieve their long-term goal of restoring large consumers, several of which prey on parrotfishes. Here we compare the negative impacts of enhanced predation with the positive impacts of reduced fishing mortality on parrotfishes inside reserves. Because large-bodied parrotfishes escape the risk of predation from a large piscivore (the Nassau grouper), the predation effect reduced grazing by only 4 to 8%. This impact was overwhelmed by the increase in density of large parrotfishes, resulting in a net doubling of grazing. Increased grazing caused a fourfold reduction in the cover of macroalgae, which, because they are the principal competitors of corals, highlights the potential importance of reserves for coral reef resilience. 相似文献

Caenorhabditis elegans proteins AFF-1 and EFF-1 [C. elegans fusion family (CeFF) proteins] are essential for developmental cell-to-cell fusion and can merge insect cells. To study the structure and function of AFF-1, we constructed vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) displaying AFF-1 on the viral envelope, substituting the native fusogen VSV glycoprotein. Electron microscopy and tomography revealed that AFF-1 formed distinct supercomplexes resembling pentameric and hexameric "flowers" on pseudoviruses. Viruses carrying AFF-1 infected mammalian cells only when CeFFs were on the target cell surface. Furthermore, we identified fusion family (FF) proteins within and beyond nematodes, and divergent members from the human parasitic nematode Trichinella spiralis and the chordate Branchiostoma floridae could also fuse mammalian cells. Thus, FF proteins are part of an ancient family of cellular fusogens that can promote fusion when expressed on a viral particle. 相似文献

This paper discusses the significance of gender-based conflicts for thefailure of Gambian irrigated rice projects. In particular, it illustrateshow resource control of a gendered crop, rice, shifts from females to maleswith the development of pump-irrigated rice projects. Irrigation imposes aradically different labor regime on household producers, demanding thatthey intensify labor for year-round cultivation. Yet, the Gambian farmingsystem evolved for a five month agricultural calendar, in which women wereaccorded specific land and labor rights. The need to restructure familylabor, specifically skilled female labor, to meet the cultivation demandsof pump irrigation is crucial for understanding the pattern of gender-basedconflicts in Gambian rice schemes. The case study illustrates thatirrigation involves more than technology transfer. Appropriate irrigationdemands sensitivity to the social structure of household production systems. The paper concludes by emphasizing the centrality of gender issuesfor improving food security in sub-Saharan Africa. 相似文献
