A field survey was conducted to determine the numbers and biomass of earthworms in soils receiving different tillage and cropping treatments, and to investigate in a greenhouse study the effect of earthworms on the rate of breakdown of soybean (Glycine max) and maize (Zea mays L.) residues. The numbers and biomass of earthworms under continuous soybeans were greater than those present under maize, possibly due to the adverse effects of insecticide and anhydrous ammonia fertilizer used with maize. No-tillage doubled the population of earthworms under soybeans, when compared with ploughing. Numbers (141 m?2) and biomass (26.5 g m?2) of earthworms under no-till soybeans were still much lower than the numbers (1298 m?2) and biomass (224.5 g m?2) under pasture receiving heavy applications of animal manure. Using 16-1 pots in the greenhouse, the effect of 0, 15 (250m?2) and 30 (500m?2) earthworms (Lumbricus rubellus) pot?1 on the rate of breakdown during 54 days of 50 g of soybean or maize residues in the Raub silt loam (Aquic Argiudoll) was studied. At 36 days, 60% of the soybean residues were recovered from pots to which no earthworms had been added, whereas in the presence of earthworms, only 34% of the soybean residues remained. In the absence of earthworms, 85% of the maize residues were recovered at 36 days, compared with only 52% in the presence of earthworms. At 36 days, 48% of the original maize residues added were still > 2 mm in length in the absence of earthworms, whereas only 26% were > 2 mm in length in the presence of earthworms. Earthworms also increased the aggregate stability of the Raub soil, when determined on moist (19–22% w/w) samples, but had no effect on soil water retention at ?33 and ?1500 kPa. The possible implications of greater earthworm activity on increasing residue incorporation and breakdown and subsequent effects on soil temperatures under no-till maize production are also discussed.  相似文献

The effects of human activity on bird behaviour and distribution have been studied extensively in recent years, but variation in their response to disturbance is still poorly understood. Here, we analyse variation in the behaviour of wintering whooper swans Cygnus c. cygnus, to determine whether their susceptibility to human activity changes with time, location and the type of disturbance involved. Overall, the swans' feeding activity varied within and between years, and in relation to feeding site, but there was less variation in the amount of time spent alert. Disturbance frequency resulting from human activity was lower with increasing flock size and with increased distance to the nearest road or track. Distances that humans could approach before alerting the birds similarly varied with field characteristics (e.g. size and proximity to roads or tracks), and also with the type of disturbance involved. The distance at which >5% of the flock became alert because of human activity decreased with the number of previous disturbance incidents in the day, indicating that swans become less sensitive to disturbance events if daily disturbance frequency is high, but there was no evidence that habituation to disturbance persisted over longer periods. The time taken for the birds to resume undisturbed behaviour varied with the duration of the disturbance event, which in turn depended on the type of disturbance involved, with pedestrians alerting the birds for longer periods than vehicles and aircraft. Recovery rates following disturbance were also associated with field size, flock size and the proportion of the flock alerted. Feeding activity was influenced by a range of variables, including year, season, field location, crop type and the number of days that the flock had used the field (32.9% of variance in the data explained by these variables), with disturbance factors explaining an additional 4.9% of variance in the proportion feeding per hour. Conversely, alert activity was influenced mainly by disturbance events. The range of factors influencing the swans' feeding behaviour, and variability in their response to human activity, has implications for management programmes and for attempts to predict the effects of human activity on the birds at a local and larger scale.  相似文献

Bentgrass (Agrostis capillaris) and clover (Trifolium repens) were grown as pure swards and mixtures in pots containing soil from the NERC Soil Biodiversity field site located in Scotland. Six weeks after plant establishment leatherjacket larvae (Tipula paludosa) were added at field density to half the pots and the impacts of their feeding on plant shoot and root biomass and soil microbial communities was determined after 10 days. Plate counts and community level physiological profiles (CLPP) were used to characterise the microbial communities. Larval herbivory had a significant negative effect on shoot growth of both grass and clover and root biomass of grass. In mixed swards, larvae preferentially fed on clover. Soil microbial community structure was altered in the presence of larvae with populations of pseudomonads being significantly increased. These community differences may be attributed to increased quantity and qualitative changes in carbon flux to the soil as a result of root herbivory, as indicated by differences in the CLPPs of microbial communities in the presence and absence of larvae. This was mainly due to increased utilisation of some sugars, carboxylic and amino acids in the presence of larvae.  相似文献

Numerous investigators of tillage system impacts on soil organic carbon (OC) or total nitrogen (N) have limited their soil sampling to depths either at or just below the deepest tillage treatment in their experiments. This has resulted in an over-emphasis on OC and N changes in the near-surface zones and limited knowledge of crop and tillage system impacts below the maximum depth of soil disturbance by tillage implements. The objective of this study was to assess impacts of long-term (28 years) tillage and crop rotation on OC and N content and depth distribution together with bulk density and pH on a dark-colored Chalmers silty clay loam in Indiana. Soil samples were taken to 1 m depth in six depth increments from moldboard plow and no-till treatments in continuous corn and soybean–corn rotation. Rotation systems had little impact on the measured soil properties; OC content under continuous corn was not superior to the soybean–corn rotation in either no-till or moldboard plow systems. The increase in OC (on a mass per unit area basis) with no-till relative to moldboard plow averaged 23 t ha−1 to a constant 30 cm sampling depth, but only 10 t ha−1 to a constant 1.0 m sampling depth. Similarly, the increase in N with no-till was 1.9 t ha−1 to a constant 30 cm sampling depth, but only 1.4 t ha−1 to a constant 1.0 m sampling depth. Tillage treatments also had significant effects on soil bulk density and pH. Distribution of OC and N with soil depth differed dramatically under the different tillage systems. While no-till clearly resulted in more OC and N accumulation in the surface 15 cm than moldboard plow, the relative no-till advantage declined sharply with depth. Indeed, moldboard plowing resulted in substantially more OC and N, relative to no-till, in the 30–50 cm depth interval despite moldboard plowing consistently to less than a 25 cm depth. Our results suggest that conclusions about OC or N gains under long-term no-till are highly dependent on sampling depth and, therefore, tillage comparisons should be based on samples taken well beyond the deepest tillage depth.  相似文献

Deodorization of swine manure using minced horseradish roots and peroxides   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Public concerns about offensive odors from livestock manures are on the rise and so is the pressure to develop practical ways to reduce the odors. The use of minced horseradish (Armoracia rusticanaL) roots (1:10 w/v plant tissue to swine slurry ratio), with calcium peroxide (CaO2 at 26 or 34 mM) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2 at 34, 52, or 68 mM) for the deodorization of swine manure, was evaluated through a series of laboratory experiments. The principle underlying this deodorization method is the oxidation of odorants by the concerted action of horseradish peroxidase (present in the plant tissue) and peroxide that serves as an electron acceptor, followed by polymerization of phenolic odorants with a possible copolymerization or adsorption of other odorant compounds. The deodorization effect was assessed by a human panel and gas chromatography (GC). In the case of the GC method, 12 compounds commonly associated with malodor (7 volatile fatty acids or VFAs, 3 phenolic compounds, and 2 indolic compounds) were used as odor indicators. Malodor assessment of the treated slurry by a human panel indicated a 50% reduction in odor intensity. GC results showed 100% removal of all phenolic odorants without reoccurrence for at least 72 h. In view of these data, using plant materials as enzyme carriers and peroxides as electron acceptors emerges as an effective approach to phenolic odor control in animal manure.  相似文献

Summary The hypothesis that water and temperature interact to influence the rate of soil N mineralization was studied in laboratory incubation experiments with two contrasting soils. Small sample rings (10 mm tall, 50 mm diameter) were packed to uniform bulk density with 1–2 mm aggregates of Plano silt loam and Wacousta silty clay loam. Samples were brought to five different water potentials (–0.1, –0.33, –0.5, –1.0, –3.0 bars) using pressure-plate techniques, and the undisturbed sample rings were then incubated at 10–35°C for 3, 10 or 14 days. The concentration of soil exchangeable NH4 +-N and NO3 -N was measured at the end of each incubation period on replicate samples. The Q10 of N mineralization was approximately 2 for all tested water potentials. Soil N mineralization was linearly related to water content or log water potential, but no water-temperature interaction was evident. The Q10 was constant with water content, and the scaled water content-N mineralization relationship was constant with temperature. We recommend the use of scaling approaches for assessing interactive effects between water and other environmental factors on N turnover in soils.  相似文献

Abstract: As the work of NGOs broadens and becomes more complex, concerns about their capacity and sustainability will loom much larger and have more signi?cant implications for development processes. The main issue addressed in this paper is how NGOs and donors variously view the relationship between capacity building and ?nancial and organisational sustainability. To this end we ?rstly explore varying de?nitions of capacity building, highlighting distinctly Paci?c perspectives of the concept and subsequently look at emerging practices used by Paci?c NGOs to create sustainable organisations. The role of donor organisations in Paci?c NGO capacity building is critiqued. We conclude that despite considerable rhetoric about the need for donors to adopt more co‐ordinated approaches to capacity building, there is limited evidence to suggest that donors are prepared to act together to set up, for example, joint capacity building funds. Donors must accept that the long‐term processes of development and the roles played by Non‐Governmental and Community Based Organisations require a rethinking of the standard funding cycle and the focus on ‘exit strategies’.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo measure twitch potentiation (the staircase phenomenon) in anesthetized dogs, and assess its relevance during neuromuscular monitoring with acceleromyography (AMG).Study designRandomized, prospective clinical trial.AnimalsSixteen dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy.MethodsUnder isoflurane anesthesia, neuromuscular function was monitored with train-of-four (TOF) stimuli every 15 seconds and quantified by AMG. Neuromuscular blockade (NMB) was produced with 0.15 mg kg?1 atracurium IV. Dogs were randomly divided into two groups; a potentiation group (PG) in which TOF stimulation was applied for 20 minutes before atracurium was administered; and a control group (CG) where no such time was allowed. In both groups, the AMG was calibrated (at tCAL) just before atracurium was administered. TOF stimulation continued throughout the experiment in all dogs. The height of the first twitch (T1) (expressed as a fraction of T1 at tCAL) and train-of-four ratio (TOFR) were recorded until TOFR returned to ≥90%.ResultsIn PG, T1 increased significantly (p = 0.0078) from a median of 102% (range, 95, 109) at baseline to 118% (100, 142) at 20 minutes. In PG, no difference was found between T1 at tCAL (immediately before atracurium administration) and T1 when neuromuscular transmission returned (p = 0.42). In the CG, T1 increased significantly between tCAL and the time neuromuscular transmission returned (p = 0.027). TOFR did not increase during twitch potentiation (all p = 0.32).Conclusions and clinical relevanceT1 increased significantly during 20 minutes of uninterrupted TOF stimulation in the absence of NMB, establishing that twitch potentiation occurs in anesthetized dogs. With no time for potentiation, T1 increased during the course of recovery from NMB; this phenomenon introduces a bias in T1 measurements and could affect studies reporting potency and duration of NMB based on T1 or single twitches. TOFR was unaltered by potentiation emphasizing its clinical usefulness for excluding post-operative residual NMB.  相似文献
