Vegetable oils, typically high in n − 6 fatty acids, are necessary alternatives in fish feed production. Such oils have been tested in salmonid diets with good growth results, but with major changes in lipid composition. The aim of this study was to provide information regarding the effect of the higher dietary n − 6/n − 3 fatty acid ratio caused by vegetable oil on growth, chemical composition and bone development, on eicosanoid production and on formation and mineralization of bone.A feeding experiment was carried out in juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Groups of fish (1.28 g) were fed diets added fish oil (FO) or soybean oil (SO) as the main lipid source through the 174 days long experimental period with sampling points at days 0, 31, 53, 96, 136 and 174 up to smoltification. Subsequently, fish performance was observed after 2, 8 and 18 months in sea water.Weight was significantly higher in the fish oil group (95.4 g) than in the soybean oil group (87.4 g) after the 174 days experimental period. This difference developed during short day treatment prior to smoltification, and the fish oil group had a significantly higher growth rate (TGC) during this period (1.62 vs 1.45). Whole body mineral analysis displayed low levels of Ca (2400 and 3500 mg kg−1) and P (3200 and 3900 mg kg−1) in all samples. The corresponding Ca:P ratio ranged from 0.74 to 0.91. On day 136 the level of Ca, and Ca/P ratio, were significantly higher in the fish oil group than in the soybean oil group. There was a significant increase in n − 6 fatty acids and decrease in n − 3 fatty acids in the soybean oil group compared to the fish oil group for both TAG and PL in vertebrae. Individual variation was large in plasma prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and at day 174 the trend was towards a higher level in the soybean oil group. Radiography analyses demonstrated a distinctive pattern of development of spinal pathology with time and fish size, similar in both groups. Hyper dense vertebrae dominated at earlier stages, fusion-type malformations dominated at harvest size. The histological examination of the vertebrae revealed no differences between treatments.The results suggest that vegetable oil as a replacement for fish oil influence the arachidonic acid level in phospholipids of vertebrae, may slightly increase production of PGE2 in blood, and reduce vertebrae mineralization around the sensitive smoltification phase. These trends did not lead to any detectable skeletal malformations. Differences in growth and vertebrae mineralization observed around smoltification disappeared during the seawater phase.  相似文献

Fruit cracking after rain limits the production of a number of crops, including some Ribes species. To gain a better understanding of the factors involved in cracking, fruit growth, deposition of the cuticular membrane (CM), water uptake and fruit cracking were studied in black currant (Ribes nigrum L. cv. Zema), gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa L. cv. Rote Triumph), and jostaberry (Ribes nidigrolaria B. cv. Jostine). Fruit surface area and fresh mass increased continuously throughout development, whereas deposition of the CM was biphasic. CM mass per fruit increased rapidly up to 42, 41, and 49 days after full bloom (DAFB) in black currant, gooseberry, and jostaberry, respectively. Thereafter, CM mass per fruit remained constant in gooseberry and jostaberry or increased at a lower rate in black currant. The cessation of or reduced rate of CM deposition resulted in a decrease in CM mass per unit area in all berries. Elastic strain of the CM at maturity averaged 23.8% and 19.5% in gooseberry and jostaberry, respectively, and only 8.2% in black currant. Microcracks in the CM were observed first in gooseberry and jostaberry 64 DAFB, whereas there were no microcracks in black currant. Water uptake into mature detached berries was linear over 2 h of incubation. Rates of uptake were highest in gooseberry followed by black currant and jostaberry. Relative uptake was similar via the cut end of the pedicel (32.1%), the apex of the fruit (34.7%) and the fruit surface (33.2%). Rates of water uptake through the fruit surface were positively related to surface area. Average fruit water potential for black currant, gooseberry, and jostaberry was −2.14 ± 0.17, −1.24 ± 0.03, and −1.89 ± 0.20 MPa, while the permeability for osmotic water uptake was 7.7 ± 0.4 × 10−8, 5.2 ± 0.1 × 10−8, and 3.3 ± 0.3 × 10−8 m s−1. Incubating whole fruit in deionized water for 72 h resulted in more cracked jostaberries (94%) than black currants (74%) or gooseberries (50%). A comparison of our findings in Ribes berries with published data for the sweet cherry drupe revealed that the berries fitted the relationships established in sweet cherry among fruit growth, cuticle deposition, strain of the cuticle, microcracking, permeability for osmotic water uptake, frequency of stomata and cracking. The Ribes berries were less susceptible to cracking than sweet cherry.  相似文献

Tissue concentrations of phytochemicals formed by Allium species may be influenced by plant nutrient supply or rhizosphere microorganism activity. To test these relations, three plant nutritional factors were varied in two experiments with Chinese chive [Allium tuberosum]: (a) increasing sulfur concentrations in the substrate, (b) two ratios of ammonium to nitrate in supply, and (c) inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Shoot dry weight, nutrient composition (nitrate, N, P, S), and organosulfur compounds (measured indirectly as pyruvic acid) were determined.  相似文献

In this study, water-in-oil emulsions were prepared from water containing different salt concentrations dispersed in an oil phase containing a mixture of β-sitosterol and γ-oryzanol. In pure oil, the β-sitosterol and γ-oryzanol molecules self-assemble into tubular microstructures to produce a firm organogel. However, in the emulsion, the water molecules bind to the β-sitosterol molecules, forming monohydrate crystals that hinder the formation of the tubules and resulting in a weaker emulsion-gel. Addition of salt to the water phase decreases the water activity, thereby suppressing the formation of sitosterol monohydrate crystals even after prolonged storage times (~1 year). When the emulsions were prepared with less polar oils, the tubular microstructure was promoted, which significantly increased the firmness of the emulsion-gel. The main conclusion of this study is that the formation of oryzanol and sitosterol tubular microstructure in the emulsion can be promoted by reducing the water activity and/or by using oils of low polarity.  相似文献

The biological effects of epicuticular substances in farinose exudates accumulated on inflorescence shafts and calyces of Primula denticulata on human acute myeloid leukemia cells (HL-60) were analyzed. The crude material possessed little antioxidative capacity but strong cytostatic properties. Some of its known components (5-hydroxyflavone, 2'-hydroxyflavone, 5,2'-dihydroxyflavone, and 5,8-dihydroxyflavone) were further tested to identify the biologically active compounds. The effects of these flavones on cell cycle progression, mitochondrial membrane potential, and reactive oxygen species have been investigated by flow cytometry. The flavonol quercetin was included in the study as reference compound because of its known cytostatic properties and its activity as radical scavenger. Compared to quercetin the flavones induced little apoptosis (up to 40 microM), but despite their low toxicity, the Primula flavonoids possessed strong cytostatic properties even at low concentrations. The cell cycle distribution showed a characteristic time-dependent shift, giving evidence of a generally short-lived effect of the test compounds in the exposed cells. The antioxidative properties quantified according to two different methods correlated with the number of hydroxyl groups. Whereas quercetin strongly affected the mitochondrial membrane potential, none of the Primula flavones showed a comparable effect.  相似文献

One of the challenges in organic farming systems is to match nitrogen (N) mineralization from organic fertilizers and crop demand for N. The mineralization rate of organic N is mainly determined by the chemical composition of the organic matter being decomposed and the activity of the soil microflora. It has been shown that long-term organic fertilization can affect soil microbial biomass (MB), the microbial community structure, and the activity of enzymes involved in the decomposition of organic matter, but whether this has an impact on short-term N mineralization from recently applied organic substances is not yet clear. Here, we sampled soils from a long-term field experiment, which had either not been fertilized, or fertilized with 30 or 60 t ha−1 year−1 of farmyard manure (FYM) since 1989. These soil samples were used in a 10-week pot experiment with or without addition of FYM before starting (recent fertilization). At the start and end of this experiment, soil MB, microbial basal respiration, total plant N, and mineral soil N content were measured, and a simplified N balance was calculated. Although the different treatments used in the long-term experiment induced significant differences in soil MB, as well as total soil C and N contents, the total N mineralization from FYM was not significantly affected by soil fertilization history. The amount of N released from FYM and not immobilized by soil microflora was about twice as high in the soil that had been fertilized with 60 t ha−1 year−1 of FYM as compared with the non-fertilized soil (p < 0.05).  相似文献
