Progestogen-related gross and microscopic changes in female Beagles.

Long-term studies of megestrol acetate and chlormadinone acetate in 100 female dogs are in progress. Doses of zero, one, 10 and 25 times the expected human dose of megestrol acetate and 25 times the expected human dose of chlormadinone acetate (on a milligram per kilogram body weight basis) are being given daily. During the first 4 years, eight dogs from each of the five groups were killed. The principal gross findings included enlarged uteri with mucoid material in the lumina, mammary development in dogs given middle and high doses of megestrol acetate and chlormadinone acetate, and thickened gallbladder walls in dogs given high doses of each. Histologic evaluation showed inhibition of ovulation for progestogen-treated dogs and suppression of ovarian follicular development with the high doses. Cystic endometrial hyperplasia was slight in the low-dose dogs and moderate to severe in most of the high-dose dogs; a few also had ulcerative endometritis and pyometra. The mammary glands of dogs given the middle and high doses produced lobules, acini, and secretion exceeding natural metestrus. Slight to marked cystic mucinous hyperplasia occurred in the gallbladders of most dogs given the high doses. Tow high-dose megestrol dogs had clinical signs and microscopic pancreatic, renal, and ocular changes indicative of diabetes mellitus.     

Porcine encephalomyelitis caused by hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus.

Six epizootics of encephalomyeltis in suckling pigs in Minnesota were attributed to infection with hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus. The disease occurred in 74 litters of pigs and was characterized by sudden onset of tremors, inappetence, weakness, atazia, and hyperesthesia, with high morbidity and case fatality rate. Pathologic changes consisted of marked nonsuppurative, nondemyelinating encephalomyelitis characterized by perivascular mononuclear cuffing, gliosis, neuronal death, and satellitosis. Clinical disease was limited principally to suckling pigs during a single farrowing period and did not recur in the herds involved during the ensuing 18 months.     

Cattle breed comparison and crossbreeding trials in Europe; A survey prepared by a working party of the European association for animal production

A Working Party of the European Association for Animal Production surveyed the breed comparison and crossbreeding trials which were being carried out in Europe. The survey summarizes the experimental work in the different countries and gives details on 86 separate projects concerned with breed and strain evaluation in pure and crossbreeding situations. The paper gives a general summary of the survey and recommendations on the methodology for future experiments. More detailed abstracts of the individual trials included in the survey are obtainable on request.     

The laboratory maintenance of field-collected Lymnaea tomentosa for the production of Fasciola hepatica metacercariae

A culture method is described for the production of Fasciola hepatica metacercariae in Lymnaea tomentosa collected from the field habitat. Two-litre glass jars, filled with artificial spring (A.S.) water and having a substratum of soil-bentonite (S.B.) agar to provide habitat and food, maintain groups of 40 to 100 snails graded according to size. Small quantities of washed lettuce are fed as a supplement. Compressed air, pre-warmed to 25°C, is piped to each jar to maintain thermoregulation, aeration, filtration and circulation of the water. Infection is achieved by reducing the A.S. water level to 3–4 mm and exposing the snails to miracidia for 6 h. During the aquatic developmental phase of 5–6 weeks, twice-weekly changes of A.S. water and the filter minimise proliferation of protozoans and Chaetogaster spp. Accumulation of mature cercariae is achieved by sustaining the infected snails on moist S.B. agar while humidification within the jar is maintained. Alternatively, groups of five to ten snails may be held in disposable petri dishes lined with S.B. agar. Maturation of cercariae may be delayed by refrigeration at 4–5°C. Upon maximum accumulation, the cercariae are harvested by dissection of the snails and metacercariae are stored in plastic containers at 4°C.
