Poloxalene, a nonionic surfactant, was fed to beef cattle on a legume ration or a high grain ration to observe its effect on bloat. It was also fed to lactating dairy cows to note any effect on yield or composition of milk.

Poloxalene was beneficial in the prevention of bloat with both legume and grain rations. It had no effect on per cent fat, protein, solids-not-fat, or yield of milk.

Two cases of nonsuppurative myeloencephalitis are reported which clinically and pathologically resemble equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. Lesions in both horses were associated with Toxoplasma-like organisms visible in microscopic sections. Clinical signs and lesions in one case primarily involved the brain and in the other case principally involved the spinal cord and associated meninges. Positive identification of the organisms was not achieved; however, the etiological agent is unlikely to be a species of Toxoplasma. Recently published studies suggest a species of Sarcocystis is involved.  相似文献

Salmonella Brandenburg was initially diagnosed in New Zealand in an aborted ewe from a Merino flock in mid-Canterbury in1996. The following year, the disease occurred on farms in mid-Canterbury and on one farm near Winton in Southland (Bailey1997). Since then, this bacterium has caused widespread abortion and deaths in pregnant ewes in Southland, coastal Otago and south- and mid-Canterbury. In cattle, the same organism has caused diarrhoea and dysentery in calves and adult cattle, and abortions and deaths in first-calving cows and, to a lesser extent, in second-calving and older cows. Salmonella Brandenburg has also caused diarrhoea and fetal deaths in dogs, and diarrhoea and deaths in foals. The outbreak strain has been extensively studied using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). All isolates tested to date have had an indistinguishable molecular pattern with the exception of a single isolate from a sheep-yard dust sample recovered in October 2000 that is the subject of this report. The molecular pattern of the variant strain differed from that of the epidemic strain by the absence of one high molecular weight band and the addition of three lower molecular weight bands.  相似文献

α2-Adrenergic receptor agonists are widely used in veterinary medicine as sedative/hypnotic agents. Four pharmacological subtypes of the α2-adrenergic receptor (A, B, C and D) have been identified based primarily on differences in affinity for several drugs. The purpose of this study was to examine the affinities of the sedative agents, xylazine, detomidine and medetomidine at the four α2-adrenergic receptor subtypes. Saturation and inhibition binding curves were performed in membranes of tissues containing only one subtype of a2-adrenergic receptor. The KD for the α2-adrenergic receptor radioligand, [3H]-MK-912, in HT29 cells (α2A-), neonatal rat lung (α2B-), OK cells (α2C-) and PC12 cells transfected with RG20 (α2D-) were 0.38 ± 0.08 n m , 0.70 ± 0.5 n m , 0.07 ± 0.02 n m and 0.87 ± 0.03 n m , respectively. Detomidine and medetomidine had approximately a 100 fold higher affinity for all the α2-adrenergic receptors compared to xylazine but neither agonist displayed selectivity for the α2-adrenergic receptor subtypes. These data suggest that available sedative/hypnotic α2-adrenergic receptor agonists can not discriminate between the four known α2-adrenergic receptor subtypes.  相似文献

The microclimatic requirements for successful seedling establishment are much more restrictive than those required for adult plant survival. The purpose of the current study was to use hydrothermal germination models and a soil energy and water flux model to evaluate intra- and interannual variability in seedbed microclimate relative to potential germination response of six perennial grasses and cheatgrass. We used a 44-yr weather record to parameterize a seedbed microclimate model for estimation of hourly temperature and moisture at seeding depth for a sandy loam soil type at the Orchard Field Test Site in southwestern Ada County, Idaho. Hydrothermal germination response was measured in the laboratory for two seed lots of cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.), four seed lots of bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata [Pursh] Löve), three seed lots of bottlebrush squirreltail (Elymus elymoides [Raf] Swezey), and one seed lot each of Sandberg bluegrass (Poa secunda J. Presl.), big squirreltail (Elymus multisetus [J.G. Smith] M.E. Jones), thickspike wheatgrass (Elymus lanceolatus [Scribn. And J.G. Smith] Gould) and Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis Elmer). Germination response models were developed to estimate potential germination rate for 13 subpopulations of each seed lot for every hour of the 44-yr simulation. Seedbed microclimate was assessed seasonally and for each day, month, and year, and germination rate-sum estimates integrated for a numerical index of relative site favorability for germination for each time period. The rate-sum favorability index showed a consistent pattern among seed lots for different years, and provides a relatively sensitive indicator of annual and seasonal variability in seedbed microclimate. This index could be used with field data to define minimum weather thresholds for successful establishment of alternative plant materials, in conjunction with weather forecast models for making restoration and fire-rehabilitation management decisions in the fall season, for evaluation of potential climate-change impacts on plant community trajectories, and in optimization schemes for selecting among alternative restoration/rehabilitation management scenarios.  相似文献
