It is known that there is much variation between individual hens and between strains of hen in (a) the incidence of egg‐shell cracking and (b) the height through which the egg is dropped at oviposition. Pilot experiments are described from which it is concluded that:
most cracks that occur in a battery cage are produced when the egg drops on to the floor at oviposition;
they are located predominantly in the two polar thirds of the shell;
their incidence is determined mainly by the effective mass of the cage floor, the mean drop height and the mean attitude of the eggs at emergence from the cloaca (broad or narrowpole first) ;it is affected only slightly by the mean shell thickness and the overall mean shell curvature (egg size);
if a hen is kept on a floor with a high effective mass, an indirect estimate of her mean drop height can be obtained quickly, easily and with high precision from observations made on her eggs after they have been laid; the observations required are the incidence of eggs with poorly formed shells, the type, location and incidence of cracks in eggs with well‐formed shells and the mean weight of the eggs;
the incidence of cracking on a heavy cage floor can be used to predict the incidence on a normal floor;
the incidence of cracking is heritable and responds rapidly to downward selection.
It is suggested that breeders should test the technique described, with a view to adopting it as a method of selecting for low crack incidence. 相似文献
OBJECTIVE: To determine clinical, radiographic, and scintigraphic abnormalities in and treatment and outcome of horses with trauma-induced osteomyelitis of the proximal aspect of the radius. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 5 horses. PROCEDURE: Data collected from the medical records included signalment; history; horse use; degree of lameness; radiographic, ultrasonographic, and scintigraphic findings; treatment; and outcome. RESULTS: Duration of lameness prior to referral ranged from 14 to 60 days. Mean severity of lameness was grade 3 of 5, and all horses had a single limb affected. All horses had signs of pain during elbow joint manipulation and digital palpation over the lateral aspect of the proximal end of the radius. Radiographic lesions consisted of periosteal proliferation, osteolysis, and subchondral bone lysis. Scintigraphy in 3 horses revealed intense pharmaceutical uptake diffusely involving the proximal end of the radius. Two horses had sepsis of the elbow joint. All horses were treated with antimicrobials long-term; 1 horse was also treated by local perfusion of the radial medullary cavity through an indwelling cannulated screw. At follow-up, all horses had returned to their previous function. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that osteomyelitis of the proximal end of the radius can result from a traumatic injury to the antebrachium. Because lesions may be an extension of septic arthritis, a thorough examination of the wound area and elbow joint is recommended. Prolonged systemic antimicrobial treatment can result in a successful outcome. 相似文献
Contrasting herbage diets were fed to lambs to evaluate their effect on subsequent development of Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae in faeces and on pasture. The diets had either no condensed tannin (CT), lucerne (Medicago sativa cv. Otaio), white clover (Trifolium repens cv. Tahora), or had moderate to high concentrations of CT, sulla (Hedysarum coronarium cv. Grassland Aokau), Lotus corniculatus (cv. Grasslands Goldie), L. pedunculatus (cv. Grassland Maku), Dorycnium pentophyllum, and Dorycnium rectum. Trials were carried out in summer (warm) and in autumn (cool and moist). In summer, egg viability was evaluated in vitro with egg hatch and larval development assays. In both seasons faeces were placed on pasture to compare recovery of eggs and larvae from faeces and larvae from herbage on the high and low fertility farmlets on the AgResearch Ballantrae Hill Country Research Station. D. rectum and D. pentophyllum diets decreased (P<0.01) egg hatching and larval development in laboratory assays relative to other diets. In summer, the number of larvae recovered from faeces placed on pasture was far greater (P<0.001) if the lambs had been fed lucerne than any other diet, whereas recovery was always lowest from faeces of sheep fed D. rectum and D. pentophyllum. Although dietary differences were lower in autumn than in summer, larval recoveries were lower (P<0.05) from faeces of lambs fed D. rectum and L. corniculatus than from white clover, lucerne and sulla diets. This study indicates that the diet of the host can have a significant impact on egg hatching and the subsequent development of T. colubriformis larvae in the laboratory and in the field. In particular, D. rectum consistently reduced T. colubriformis development. Effects measured in vitro generally under-estimated effects measured under field conditions. 相似文献
