Storage of lipids in the myosepta of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was determined by dissection of myosepta from both white and dark muscle, by analyzing lipid classes of myosepta, and by analysis of muscle tissues with and without myosepta. By using Iatroscan-TLC/FID it was found that triglyceride was the only major lipid class present in the myosepta. In a sample pooled from three fish, 39.1% of white muscle lipids were found to be stored in the associated myosepta. In the dark muscle up to 62.4% of the total lipids were located in the associated myosepta.After removal of the myosepta, the ratio of the total lipid content of dark muscle to white muscle decreased from 5.25 to 3.66. The proportion of polar lipids increased in both white muscle and dark muscle after removal of the myosepta; however the ratio of phosphatidyl choline (PC) to phosphatidyl ethanolamine (PE) in both muscle types remained constant. This suggests that neutral lipids accounted for most of the lipids in the myosepta. - 1. Mapping of seabed habitats is increasingly being used to identify the distribution and structure of marine ecosystems and as surrogate measures of biodiversity for marine protected area (MPA) planning. In this study, the distribution of seabed habitats to the 3 nmi limit around the Kent Group of islands, south‐eastern Australia were mapped using video ground‐truthed single‐beam acoustics at the mesoscale level (10 m to 1 km) as part of an MPA planning process.
- 2. Six distinct seabed habitat types (continuous reef, patchy reef, sand, hard sand, sparse sponge, and seagrass) were identified based primarily on visual differences in the first and second echo and a further four (low, medium and high profile reef, and sand hills) on variations in seabed profile identified in the echogram. Extensive acoustic and video transects allowed an estimate of the broad‐scale spatial distribution of seabed habitats defined at several hierarchical levels and provided information on the cover of the dominant benthic species or assemblages.
- 3. The island group supports a range of consolidated habitats, including rocky reefs of varying profile dominated by the macroalgae Phyllospora comosa and Ecklonia radiata in depths down to around 45 m, adjacent to deeper sponge‐dominated reefs containing encrusting, erect and branching forms. Unconsolidated habitats occurred broadly through the island group, with the offshore region dominated by hard sand (sand with scallop shells and/or shell grit) and sparse sponge‐habitats (sand interspersed with low cover of sponge‐dominated assemblages). The sheltered coves were dominated by sand and seagrass habitats consisting of beds of the seagrasses Halophila australis, Zostera tasmanica and Posidonia australis, with variations in species composition, patchiness and percentage cover evident within and between coves.

In February 2004 the Kent Group MPA was announced, covering all waters out to the 3 nmi limit containing two areas defined as a Sanctuary Zone (‘no take’) and a Habitat Protection Zone (‘restricted take’). Overall, seabed habitat mapping generated a capability to define the boundary and size of potential MPA zones within the Kent Group of islands and was an essential component of the planning process to improve the likelihood that the MPA was comprehensive, adequate and representative (CAR).
- 5. The need to define habitats at multiple scales within a hierarchical classification scheme that are meaningful in terms of biodiversity and CAR principles and identifiable using mapping techniques is discussed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective efficacy of the CIRCOQ porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) subunit vaccine in piglets with high maternally derived antibodies (MDAs) against disease caused by natural infection with PCV2d. A total of 130 weaned, 21-day-old healthy pigs was allocated into 3 trial groups. The signs of respiratory disorder were higher in unvaccinated pigs than in vaccinated pigs at 13 to 17 weeks old (P < 0.05), 18 to 22 weeks old (P < 0.001), and 23 to 27 weeks old (P < 0.01). The unvaccinated pigs had an early rate of dermatitis at 8 to 12 weeks old (10.0%), 13 to 17 weeks old (30.0%), 18 to 22 weeks old (46.7%), and 23 to 27 weeks old (33.3%), while there were no cases of dermatitis in vaccinated pigs. There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) in the mortality of pigs in the unvaccinated group and the 2-dosed vaccinated group. PCV2 viremia was detected in the blood and peaked at 105 days old in both unvaccinated pigs (Ct-adj = 8.40) and pigs vaccinated with 1 dose (Ct-adj = 6.37), while no detectable PCV2 virus was found in the blood of pigs vaccinated with 2 doses. At 77 and 105 days old, the PCV2 viremia load (Ct-adj) of unvaccinated pigs and those vaccinated with 1 dose was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of the 2-dosed vaccinated pigs. The body weight (BW), average weight gain (AWG), and average daily gain (ADG) in both groups of vaccinated pigs were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those of unvaccinated pigs. The study vaccine was significantly efficacious in protecting vaccinated pigs against clinical symptoms, blood viral load, and mortality, as well as improving productivity, compared with unvaccinated pigs. 相似文献

The temporal and vertical distributions of four N species, N03 ?, NO2 ?, total ammonia (T-NH3), and free ammonia (NH3), are documented for Onondaga Lake, an urban, polluted, hypereutrophic, dimictic, lake that receives a very high load of T-NH3. Nitrate and NO2 ? were lost rapidly from the hypolimnion, and T-NH3 accumulated to high concentrations (maximum > 10 mgN L?1), after the onset of anoxia, consistent with the lake's high level of productivity. The concentrations of T-NH3, NH3 and N03 ? that were maintained in the epilimnion (average concentrations at a depth of 1 m of 2.81, 0.16 and 0.91 mgN L?1, respectively), and concentrations of N02 ? that developed in the epilimnion (maximum of 0.48 mgN L?1), were high in comparison to levels reported in the literature. These elevated concentrations are largely a result of the extremely high loads of T-NH3, and its precursors, received by the lake. Water quality problems in the lake related to the prevailing high concentrations of N species include potential toxicity effects and severe lake-wide oxygen depletion during fall turnover. 相似文献

Concentrations of methyl mercury (MeHg) and total mercury (THg) in precipitation were measured at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA), a remote field station in northwestern Ontario. We found that precipitation was a source of both MeHg and THg to boreal ecosystems, but at lower rates than in industrialized regions of North America and Scandinavia. MeHg concentrations in precipitation ranged from 0.010 to 0.179 ng L?1 and were highest when events originated west of the ELA. THg concentrations in precipitation ranged from 0.95 to 9.31 ng L?1 and were highest when the events came from the southeast. There was no relationship between THg and MeHg over time in precipitation. Inputs of both MeHg and THg to ecosystems were highest during summer months. 相似文献

This paper uses George Ritzer’s account of McDonaldization – the socially transformative process of rationalization – to undertake
a critical analysis of agri-environment schemes, the dominant form of on-farm nature conservation in England. Drawing on a
wide range of evidence, including social surveys of the participants and non-participants of agri-environment schemes, government
files, and interviews with government officials, the four key dimensions of McDonaldization – efficiency, calculability, predictability,
and control (through non-human technologies) – are applied to the analysis of agri-environment schemes. The irrationalities
emerging from a McDonaldized approach to nature conservation are discussed together with their implications for farmers, nature,
and society. In conclusion, the paper points to the emergence of alternative models of on-farm nature conservation that may
offer ways of resisting and displacing the McDonaldized version.
