Immunoglobulin E (IgE) plays an important role in defense against parasitic infections as well as allergy. Knowledge of serum total IgE concentrations may have value in diagnosis and prognostication of various disorders; however, to date, no studies have reported feline serum total IgE concentrations. We hypothesize that serum total IgE concentrations will be greater in spontaneously parasitized and asthmatic cats compared to healthy pet cats. Healthy (n=10), parasitized (10) and asthmatic cats (eight) had measurement of serum total IgE by ELISA. Data were analyzed using a t-test with P<0.05 considered significant. Serum total IgE was higher in parasitized (mean±SEM, 328.4±123.8μg/ml; P<0.028) and asthmatic cats (85.5±19.5μg/ml; P<0.047) compared to healthy cats (45.9±19.6μg/ml). However, serum total IgE had poor discriminatory capability between diseased and healthy cats. In conclusion, this assay can detect small quantities of feline serum total IgE, which may be beneficial in future studies of parasitism or allergic disease. 相似文献

Coronatine (COR) functions as a virulence factor in the interaction of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato strain DC3000 with tomato and Arabidopsis. COR consists of two moieties, coronafacic acid (CFA) and coronamic acid (CMA).
Both COR and CFA function as structural and functional analogues of jasmonic acid (JA) and related signaling compounds such
as methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and JA-isoleucine (JA-Ile). The precise function of COR and whether MeJA functions as an analogue
of COR in disease development are not known. In this study, we analyzed whether the COR-defective mutant DB29, which is a
CFA− CMA− mutant of DC3000, could be complemented for virulence via the exogenous application of COR, CFA, or MeJA. When tomato seedlings
were inoculated with DB29 and supplemented with exogenous COR, the DB29 population multiplied in tomato seedlings and induced
disease phenotypes similar to wild-type DC3000. Although the addition of exogenous MeJA or CFA enhanced the multiplication
of DB29, wild-type disease phenotypes could not be restored with these compounds. Furthermore, inoculation of DB29 along with
exogenous COR, but not MeJA or CFA, suppressed the expression of defense-related genes and increased the accumulation of reactive
oxygen species, which are associated with severe chlorosis. Taken together, our results suggest that although COR targets
the jasmonate pathway by mimicking JA, the function of COR in disease development is distinctly different from MeJA or CFA. 相似文献

One hundred and five wild-caught emerald tree boas (Corallus caninus) were added to a collection of 15 others. in Central Florida, during a 4-mo period. Eighty-one boas (67%) developed repetitive regurgitation during the 23-mo period after the initial introduction, and 61 (75%) of these died. Regurgitation occurred 3-4 days after feeding. Prevalence of regurgitation in this population of snakes was 25%/mo (range 0-42%), and incidence was 3.52/mo (range 0-13/mo). The cumulative mortality for those boas developing repetitive regurgitation (61 of 120) during the 23-mo epizootic was 51%. Hematologic findings included anemia and leukocytosis, with lymphocytosis, monocytosis, and azurophilia. Histologic evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract showed multifocal to diffuse lymphoplasmacytic inflammation with granuloma formation and positive immunohistochemical staining for chlamydial antigen. A Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to analyze how beaver (Castor canadensis) have altered the hydrology and vegetation of Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota over a 46-year period. Maps of beaver ponds
prepared from 1940, 1948, 1961, 1972, 1981, and 1986 aerial photographs were analyzed with a rasterbased based GIS to determine
impoundment hydrology and vegetation distributions for each map date. Overlay and classification techniques were used to quantify
hydrologic and vegetation changes between map dates. The GIS was superior to manual methods for some analyses (e.g., area measurement), and indispensible for others (e.g., transition analysis). Total area impounded increased from 1% to 13% of the landscape between 1940 and 1986, as the beaver
population increased from near extirpation to a density of 1 colony/km2. Most of the impoundment area increase occurred during the first two decades, when 77% of cumulative impoundment area was
flooded. Once impounded ≥60% of the area maintained the same water depth or vegetation during any decade. GIS procedures were
combined with field data to show that available nitrogen stocks nearly tripled between 1940 and 1986 as a result of beaver

A 6-year-old, intact male Chihuahua was presented with stranguria and painful urination of 5 days duration. Cystine crystals were observed in low numbers in unstained urine sediment preparations, and a diagnosis of cystinuria was made. Uroliths were removed surgically from the urethra and the bladder, and mineral analysis indicated the stones were composed of 100% cystine. Cystinuria results from an inherited defect in renal tubular transport of cystine that affects many breeds and has been found as an autosomal recessive trait in Newfoundlands. Accurate identification of cystine crystals in urine is an important means of diagnosing cystinuria. 相似文献
