Orchard and vineyard producers conduct preplant site evaluations to help prevent planting permanent tree and vine crops on
lands where the crop will not perform to its highest potential or attain its full life expectancy. Physical soil characteristics
within specific soil profiles and spatially throughout an orchard influence decisions on land preparation, irrigation system
selection, horticultural choices, and nutrient management. Producers depend on soil surveys to help them understand the soil
characteristics of the land and may be interested in technology that provides additional information. Electromagnetic induction
(EM38) and four-probe soil resistance sensors (VERIS) are being used in combination with global positioning systems to map
spatial variability of soils using apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa). The hypothesis evaluated in this study is
whether rapid, in situ, and relatively low-cost methods of measuring ECa (EM38 and VERIS) can effectively identify and map
physical soil variability in non-saline soils. The supposition is that in non-saline soils, ECa levels will relate well to
soil texture and water-holding capacity and can be used to map physical soil variability. In turn, the information can be
used to guide decisions on preplant tillage, irrigation system design, water and nutritional management, and other horticultural
considerations. Two sites in the Sacramento Valley were mapped each with EM38 and VERIS methods. Site-specific management
zones were identified by each provider on ECa maps for each site, and then soil samples were collected by University of California
researchers to verify these zones. Results showed that on non-saline soils, ECa measured with both EM38 and VERIS correlate
with physical soil properties such as gravel, sand, silt, and clay content but the relationship between conductivity and these
physical soil properties varied from moderately strong to weak. The strength of the correlation may be affected by several
factors including how dominant soil texture is on conductivity relative to other soil properties and on methods of equipment
operation, data analysis and interpretation. Overall, the commercial providers of ECa surveys in this study delivered reasonable
levels of accuracy that were consistent with results reported in previous studies. At one site, an ECa map developed with
VERIS provided more detail on physical soil variability to supplement published soil surveys and aided in the planning and
development of a walnut orchard. At a second site, almond yield appeared to correlate well with distinctly different soil

Incorporation of insoluble fibers into extruded cereals severely limits their expansion and reduces crispness. The specific objective of this work was to investigate how corn bran and its fractions mixed with cornmeal affect rheology and extrudate expansion. Alkali-treated bran (ATB) and alkaline-soluble bran (ASB) were prepared from unmodified corn bran (UMB). Mixtures of the different corn bran fractions and degermed cornmeal having a 26% (w/w) of total dietary fibers were extruded in a twin screw extruder and expansion of the extrudates was determined. Melt shear rheology of mixtures of cornmeal and different corn bran fractions having a 20% total dietary fiber was determined using a capillary rheometer at 120 °C while the extensional rheology was determined using lubricated squeezing flow. The expansion of extrudates containing ATB was larger than those containing UMB, while extrudates containing ASB showed a greater expansion that was close to that of the control. Addition of UMB to cornmeal increased shear and extensional viscosity significantly as compared to the control. ATB addition increased the shear viscosity of the mixture to a small extent but showed the highest extensional viscosity amongst the samples. Phoma stem canker is a damaging disease of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) that causes annual yield losses to UK oilseed rape growers worth approximately £100 million, despite the use of fungicides. In the UK, oilseed rape is sown in August/September and harvested in the following July. The disease epidemics are initiated by ascospores released from Leptosphaeria spp. pseudothecia (ascocarps) on stem stubble in the autumn/winter. Control of this disease is reliant on the use of cultivars with “field resistance” and azole fungicides. This study investigated the effects of cultivar resistance and application of the fungicide prothioconazole on the severity of stem canker before harvest and the subsequent production of pseudothecia on the infected stubble under natural conditions in the 2017/2018, 2018/2019, and 2019/2020 cropping seasons. The application of prothioconazole and cultivar resistance decreased the severity of phoma stem canker before harvest, and the subsequent production of Leptosphaeria spp. pseudothecia on stubble in terms of pseudothecial density. Results showed that stems with less severe stem cankers produced fewer mature pseudothecia of Leptosphaeria spp. on the infected stubble. This investigation suggests that the most sustainable and effective integrated control strategy for phoma stem canker in seasons with low quantities of inoculum is to use cultivars with medium or good field resistance and apply only one spray of prothioconazole when required. 相似文献

Stable isotope analysis is a powerful tool in the study of soil organic matter formation. It is often observed that more decomposed soil organic matter is 13C, and especially 15N-enriched relative to fresh litter and recent organic matter. We investigated whether this shift in isotope composition relates to the isotope composition of the microbial biomass, an important source for soil organic matter. We developed a new approach to determine the natural abundance C and N isotope composition of the microbial biomass across a broad range of soil types, vegetation, and climates. We found consistently that the soil microbial biomass was 15N-enriched relative to the total (3.2 ‰) and extractable N pools (3.7 ‰), and 13C-enriched relative to the extractable C pool (2.5 ‰). The microbial biomass was also 13C-enriched relative to total C for soils that exhibited a C3-plant signature (1.6 ‰), but 13C-depleted for soils with a C4 signature (−1.1 ‰). The latter was probably associated with an increase of annual C3 forbs in C4 grasslands after an extreme drought. These findings are in agreement with the proposed contribution of microbial products to the stabilized soil organic matter and may help explain the shift in isotope composition during soil organic matter formation. 相似文献

An imaging report is a vital communication tool between a radiologist and clinician. In a field where in‐person communication may not be readily available, it is imperative that the report clearly relays pertinent clinical information in a timely manner. The purpose of this observational study was to describe and compare opinions and expectations of small animal general practitioners, veterinary specialists, and veterinary radiologists regarding the imaging report. Online surveys were distributed, and data were collected from 202 veterinary clinicians and 123 veterinary radiologists. The majority (89%) of clinicians were satisfied with their imaging reports and stated that they read the radiology report as soon as it was available (92%). Just less than half (48%) of clinicians indicated it was standard of care that a board‐certified veterinary radiologist read all imaging studies. Radiologists and clinicians agreed that a clinical history (98% and 94%, respectively) and clinical question (82% and 68%, respectively) were needed to generate a good radiology report. Fifty‐five percent to 70% of clinicians prefer red bulleted reports, which included incidental findings (96%); while radiologists slightly favored prose reporting (37–46%). Clinicians found it helpful when additional imaging (86%), medical (71%), and surgical recommendations (73%) were made. About one‐third of specialists who had been in practice for >11 years thought they were better able to interpret imaging for their own specialty than the radiologist. Clinicians voiced discontentment with reports that were not completed in a timely manner or did not give a prioritized differential list. Further studies are warranted to provide a more in‐depth evaluation of veterinary radiology reporting structure and style. 相似文献

Conservation research often focuses on individual threats at a single spatial scale, but population declines can result from multiple stressors occurring at different spatial scales. Analyses incorporating alternative hypotheses across spatial scales allow more robust evaluation of the ecological processes underlying population declines.Objectives
Populations of many aerially insectivorous birds are declining, yet conservation efforts remain focused on habitat due to an absence of data on changes in prey availability. We evaluate the potential for prey and habitat availability at multiple spatial scales to influence a population of eastern whip-poor-wills (Antrostomus vociferous).Methods
We assess relationships between landcover (topographical map and satellite imagery) and insect abundance (moths and beetles from blacklight traps), and whip-poor-will distribution and abundance within eastern Canada using Ontario breeding bird atlas data (1980s and 2000s), acoustic recordings (regional), and point counts (local).Results
Whip-poor-will occurrence in both atlas time periods was positively associated with forest area and fragmentation, but only a delayed effect of urban area explained reductions in detection. Contemporary regional whip-poor-will presence was positively related to moth abundance, and local whip-poor-will abundance was best predicted by area of open-canopy forest, anthropogenic linear disturbance density, and beetle abundance. Our finding that bird presence and abundance were associated with human activity and insect abundance across spatial scales suggests factors beyond habitat structure are likely driving population declines in whip-poor-wills and other aerial insectivores.Conclusions
This study demonstrates the importance of examining multiple hypotheses, including seasonally and locally variable food availability, across a range of spatial scales to direct conservation efforts.88.

The significant and continued transboundary spread of Asian avian influenza H5N1 since 2003, paired with documented transmission from avian species to humans and other mammals, has focused global attention on avian influenza virus detection and diagnostic strategies. While the historic and conventional laboratory methods used for isolation and identification of the virus and for detection of specific antibodies continued to be widely applied, new and emerging technologies are rapidly being adapted to support avian influenza virus surveillance and diagnosis worldwide. Molecular tools in particular are advancing toward lab-on-chip and fully integrated technologies that are capable of same day detection, pathotyping, and phylogenetic characterization of influenza A viruses obtained from clinical specimens. The future of avian influenza diagnostics, rather than moving toward a single approach, is wisely adopting a strategy that takes advantage of the range of conventional and advancing technologies to be used in "fit-for-purpose" testing. 相似文献

Susceptibility to acephate, methomyl, and permethrin was determined with laboratory bioassays for adults of greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood, from 12 to 14 sites in Hawaii. Comparisons at LC50 showed up to 42-fold resistance to acephate, 36-fold resistance to methomyl, and 8-fold resistance to permethrin. Higher levels of resistance to acephate and methomyl than to permethrin are consistent with greater use of organophosphates and carbamates than pyrethroids by growers. Insecticide use varied from 1 to 98 insecticide sprays per site per season. Significant positive associations between LC50 for each insecticide and frequency of application of the same insecticide were found across sites. This finding suggests that local variation in insecticide use was an important cause of variation in susceptibility. 相似文献
