A series of lines, differing in isozyme genotype, were constructed by selection from within three cultivars of Lolium perenne. Field assessment of the progeny of these selected line? revealed variation in yield and timing of inflorescence emergence. This variation between lines from within a cultivar could not be accounted for by the differing levels of homozygosity attained. In some instances differences in yield were associated with homozygosity for specific alleles at the PGI/2 locus, background genotype was however, of major importance. The variation identified could be attributable to founder effects or possible linkage of quantitative trail loci to the PGI/2 locus. 相似文献

Bonefish (Albula spp.) support a circum-tropical sport fishery in which anglers predominantly release angled fish. The influence of hook location, size, and type on hook retention, post-release feeding ability and survival were evaluated. Overall, 46% of bonefish held in large holding tanks expelled hooks within a 14-day observation period. Hooks located in the lip were expelled 2.6 times more frequently than hooks located in the gut. Barbless hooks were expelled 3.9 times faster when located deep in the oral cavity compared to barbed hooks, but there was no difference in expulsion rates among barbed and barbless hooks in shallow-hooked fish. For the two hook sizes studied, hook size had no impact on hook expulsion rates or duration of hook retention regardless of hook location or type. The presence of a hook had no significant effect on weight change, indicating the presence of a hook did not impede feeding ability. No post-release mortality was observed for bonefish during the short duration of this study. Leaving a difficult to remove hook in a bonefish is recommended to increase the likelihood of post-release survival, especially in cases where the threat of bonefish predators is high. 相似文献

Fish and shellfish retail samples (n = 122) were purchased from three Canadian cities in the winter of 2002 and analyzed for a total of 18 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners. The samples (salmon, trout, tilapia, Arctic char, mussels, oysters, shrimp, and crab) represented the range of fish and shellfish commercially available to Canadian consumers at the time of purchase. Trout and salmon (geometric mean SigmaPBDE = 1600 and 1500 pg/g, wet weight, respectively) were found to contain significantly higher amounts of PBDEs than the mussel, tilapia, and shrimp groups (geometric mean SigmaPBDE = 260, 180, and 48 pg/g, wet weight, respectively). These differences in SigmaPBDE concentrations among fish and shellfish products were partly driven by differences in lipid content among the samples. Mean SigmaPBDE concentrations in domestic samples were also significantly greater than in imported samples, possibly reflecting global environmental distribution of PBDEs. These concentration differences will contribute to variations in dietary exposure to PBDEs when assorted fish and shellfish items from various origins are consumed. 相似文献

A cohort study was initiated in the spring of 2006 to investigate epidemiological aspects and pathogenesis of salmonid alphavirus (SAV) subtype 3 infections and pancreas disease (PD). The aims were to assess involvement of the freshwater production phase, the extent and frequency of subclinical infections and to follow PD‐affected populations throughout the entire seawater production cycle, as well as investigate possible risk factors for PD outbreaks. Fish groups from 46 different Atlantic salmon freshwater sites in six counties were sampled once prior to seawater transfer and followed onto their seawater sites. A total of 51 Atlantic salmon seawater sites were included, and fish groups were sampled three times during the seawater production phase. SAV subtype 3 was not identified by real‐time RT‐PCR from samples collected in the freshwater phase, nor were any SAV‐neutralizing antibodies or histopathological changes consistent with PD. In the seawater phase, SAV was detected in samples from 23 of 36 (63.9%) studied sites located within the endemic region. No SAV subtype 3 was detected in samples from seawater sites located outside the endemic region. The cumulative incidence of PD during the production cycle amongst sites with SAV detected was 87% (20 of 23 sites). Average fish weight at time of PD diagnosis ranged from 461 to 5978 g, because of a wide variation in the timing of disease occurrence throughout the production cycle. Mortality levels following a PD diagnosis varied greatly between populations. The mean percentage mortality was 6.9% (±7.06) (range 0.7–26.9), while the mean duration of increased mortality following PD diagnosis was 2.8 months (±1.11) (range 1–6). 相似文献

A method based on measurements of dissolved molecular nitrogen, molecular oxygen, and argon can distingish biological from physical contributions to oxygen supersaturation in the ocean. The derived values of biological O(2) production can be used as a check on estimates of total organic productivity measured by instantaneous rates of carbon-14 assimilation. Application to the shallow summer O(2) maxima in the North Pacific gyres shows that about 72% of the O(2) supersaturation maximum at 28 degrees N and about 86% of the maximum at 40 degrees N are due to net photosynthetic production. 相似文献
