Sodium polyphosphate and triple superphosphate were used as sources of polyphosphate and orthophosphate, respectively, at equal P2O5 application rates in sunfish (Lepomis spp.) ponds. Filtrable orthophosphate and total phosphorus concentrations were generally higher in ponds treated with polyphosphate. However, differences between chlorophyll a concentration and net sunfish production did not differ between treatments (P > 0.05).  相似文献

The potential influence of drying, liming, tilling, bacterial augmentation, and nitrogen fertilization on respiration of pond bottom soil exposed to air between crops was evaluated in laboratory studies using soil respiration chambers. The optimum soil moisture concentration for respiration was 12–20%, and further drying decreased soil respiration. Soil respiration was greatest at pH 7.5–8.0, and both calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate were effective in enhancing respiration of acidic soil. Pulverization of soil to eliminate the hard surface crust formed on drying accelerated respiration, thus tilling of pond bottom soils would be expected to increase respiration. Nitrogen fertilization showed some benefit to soil respiration, but there was no value in bacterial augmentation. These laboratory findings provide background information useful to pond studies on bottom soil treatments.  相似文献

The effects of a single oral administration of des-Gly10-[D-Ala6]-luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (1–9)-ethylamide (LHRHa) in the diet (0.2–2.5 mg/kg body weight) on ovulation and spawning of spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) were examined. Oral administration of 1.0–2.5 mg LHRHa/kg to females in four separate experiments resulted in successful spawning 32–38 h later with mean fertilization and hatching success rates of 93.3% and 74.6%, respectively. A lower dose of LHRHa (0.2 mg/kg) was ineffective in two subsequent experiments. The data suggest that oral administration of 1 mg LHRHa/kg is a reliable method of inducing ovulation in spotted seatrout, resulting in predictable spawning within 38 h of feeding. This noninvasive treatment may be particularly useful for induced spawning of teleosts which are susceptible to handling stress.  相似文献

Abstract— Laboratory studies with pond water samples revealed that 5 mg/L active chlorine was needed to provide enough chlorine residual to reduce biological activity. Treatment of channel catfish ponds with repeated, 0.1-mg/L doses of active chlorine from calcium hypochlorite at 6- to 8-d intervals, as sometimes done by catfish farmers, had little influence on water quality. Dissolved oxygen, total ammonia-nitrogen, and chlorophyll a concentrations and pH were similar between treated and control ponds. Concentrations of chemical oxygen demand and particulate organic matter were seldom different between treated and control ponds. Channel catfish survival and net production were not improved by chlorine treatment. Thus, chlorination of production ponds during the grow-out period is not a useful technique. Treatment of sediment samples from ponds with up to 1,200-mg active chlorinelkg soil did not reduce bacterial abundance, so chlorination of bottoms of empty ponds may not he an effective disinfection procedure. Chlorination of pond waters with 30-mg/L active chlorine caused complete kill of bacteria 24 h after treatment, although heterotrophic bacteria quickly re-populated the water. Thus, chlorination can be an effective way to disinfect ponds before stocking.  相似文献

A total of 24 newborn pigs were used to determine 1) the relationship between the quantity of colostrum consumed and the capacity for gluconeogenesis and fatty acid oxidation and 2) whether fatty acid oxidation limits gluconeogenesis in isolated hepatocytes. Neonatal pigs were obtained prior to nursing and allotted to one of three treatment groups; fed (ad libitum), limit-fed (25% of fed group), or fasted. Hepatocytes were isolated when pigs were 24 h old. Colostrum intake altered the metabolic status of neonates such that the capacity for glucose synthesis and oxidation of octanoate increased with intake. Glucose synthesis with lactate as the substrate was greater (P less than .01) for fed pigs (10.79 mumol glucose.h-1.mg DNA-1) than for either limit-fed (6.56) or fasted counterparts (4.78), which were similar (P greater than .10). Colostrum intake failed to stimulate synthesis from alanine. The oxidation rate for octanoate was similar for fed and limit-fed pigs (.62 and .61 nmol CO2.h-1.mg DNA-1, respectively) but greater (P less than .05) than that observed for fasted counterparts (.36). Oxidation of octanoate (2 mM) was approximately 30-fold greater than for oleate (1 mM); oxidation of the latter was not affected by either colostrum intake or the addition of carnitine (1 mM). The increase in octanoate oxidation, however, did not elicit an increase in glucose synthesis by fasting pigs with either lactate or alanine as precursors. Thus, we conclude that gluconeogenesis is a function of colostrum intake and that reducing equivalents and(or) ATP may not be primary factors limiting glucose synthesis in pigs fasted from birth.  相似文献

Objective To assess the efficacy of a new staphylococcal mastitis vaccine under commercial dairying conditions.
Design A field trial involving 1819 cows and heifers conducted on seven dairy herds in Victoria. The trial was done 'blind'; approximately half the animals were vaccinated and the remainder were untreated controls.
Procedure The vaccine was given twice during the last 10 weeks of pregnancy. Effects of vaccination were assessed, during the ensuing lactation, on the basis of clinical and sub-clinical mastitis and microbiological investigations of the milk.
Results A total of 273 cases of clinical mastitis were recorded. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 112 of these, 45 cases in vaccinates and 67 cases in controls; the difference was not statistically significant. One herd was notable in having a high incidence of clinical staphylococcal mastitis. This herd accounted for 15.8% of the animals in the field trial but 54.5% of cases of clinical staphylococcal mastitis. For this herd, vaccinated animals had significantly lower incidence of clinical staphylococcal mastitis and prevalence of subclinical mastitis, relative to controls. An unexpected feature of the trial as a whole was the low incidence of clinical mastitis from which S aureus was isolated in pure culture (26.3% of cases) and the high incidence of clinical Streptococcus uberis mastitis (22.7% of cases).
Conclusions The trial showed that the vaccine was efficacious in reducing the incidence of clinical mastitis and prevalence of subclinical mastitis in a herd that had a serious staphylococcal mastitis problem.  相似文献

Objective
To describe a case of meningoencephalitis caused by Balamuthia mandrillaris in an orang utan.
Design
A pathological case report.
Animal
A 20 years old male orang utan (Pongo pygmaeus).
Procedure
The disease process was investigated by clinical pathology, necropsy, histopathology and immunofluorescence labelling.
Results
The orang utan developed sudden onset of depression, lethargy, inappetence and apparent head pain. The condition was considered to be related to a 2 year history of upper and lower respiratory disease, and the animal was placed on antibiotics after extensive testing. By the seventh day the animal had become ataxic and disoriented and a brain abscess was suspected. He died on the ninth day of illness. At necropsy, and subsequent sectioning, the brain showed multiple circular, soft, white to grey brown areas of varying size, the largest being in the left temporal (3.5 cm diameter) and right occipital (2.5 cm diameter) regions of the cerebrum. Histological examination of these regions revealed many amoebic trophozoites and occasional cysts associated with areas of haemorrhage and inflammatory necrosis. The trophozoites were packed in perivascular spaces and their nuclei often contained two or more prominent nucleoli. Immunofluorescent labelling of histological sections suggested that the agent was B mandrillaris.
Clinical implications
This report provides further evidence that B mandrillaris , a free living amoeba, can act as a pathogen in animals as well as people, and cause fatal meningoencephalitis. Along with Naegleria and Acanthamoeba spp, B mandrillaris should be considered amongst the causes of acute onset meningoencephalitis in animals.  相似文献

The induction of pneumonic pasteurellosis in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) was examined. Specific pathogen free male guinea pigs were anesthetized and a tracheostomy performed to introduce 10(5), 10(4) or 10(3) Pasteurella haemolytica-A1 into the left principal bronchus. The surgical site was closed with tissue adhesive and staples and the animals were monitored for signs of respiratory tract infection. Within 24 hours after inoculation they became depressed, anorectic, pyretic and dyspneic. Fibrinous pleuropneumonia with prominent areas of necrosis and hemorrhage was present. Pericardial effusion was a frequent finding. There was infiltration of the pleura and alveoli with degenerate heterophils and macrophages, a hyperplastic mesothelium and fibrin exudation on the pleura and within alveoli. Hemorrhage, congestion, consolidation, edema and fibrin exudation were prominent in the hilar region of the lungs. Bacterial colonies were evident in all airways. More bacteria were recovered from infected lungs than were inoculated (p less than 0.05) indicating P. haemolytica was actively multiplying in the lungs. Hematological and clinical chemistry data were consistent with fibrinous pneumonia, however, blood cultures were positive for P. haemolytica in 61% (11/18) of animals sampled. Examination of pneumonic pasteurellosis in guinea pigs may be useful in studying pathogenetic and pathological features applicable to bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis (shipping fever pneumonia).  相似文献

Summary A comparison was made of the meiotic stability and reproductive behaviour ofTriticale hexaploide cv. Rosner andT. aestivum cv. Pitic in response to two temperature regimes (15° and 30°C) imposed continuously from premeiosis to maturity. Mean frequencies of MI open bivalents, univalents, and lagging chromosomes at AI were significantly higher in Rosner than in Pitic. Such irregularity would appear to arise from the asynchronous disjunction of chromosomes between Metaphase I and Anaphase I, resulting in meiotic disturbances and a high frequency of abnormal microspores. Despite such abnormalities, floret fertility was equivalent to that observed in Pitic, and the proportion of aneuploids recovered in the progeny, although greater than expected in wheat, was much lower than would be predicted. It is suggested that there is a strong certation effect in the transmission of aneuploid microspores and that the irregularities observed during microsporogenesis do not apply directly to megasporogenesis.No appreciable effect of temperature on meiotic chromosome behaviour during microsporogenesis was observed in either wheat or Triticale.
