Since written information about the appearance of mothsEphestia elutella, E. cautella, E. kuehniella, andPlodia interpunctella which are harmful to stored products, is somewhat limited and uncertain, investigations into the appearance of the four species of moths out of doors, were carried out in 1982 and 1983 in Berlin (West) and in the Brunswick area (Lower Saxony) in 1984, using “Biotrap®” as bait in the traps. In both of the investigation areas male moths of all types appeared in the inner city zone (the numbers of the moths caught in Berlin are as follows, starting with the largest group:P. interpunctella, E. kuehniella, E. elutella, E. cautella). On the outskirts of both cities and in their park-like areas as well as in the rural countryside surrounding Brunswick,E. cautella was missing from the traps, probably because there is little or nothing there which is liable to infestation (nuts and cocoa beans) and which might give rise to the open-air appearance of the moths. In specially baited traps (pheromone and broken almonds) and in the vicinity of heavily infested objects, a very small number of female moths was also caught. The results of all investigations show that moths which are harmful to food supplies, are to be found out of doors. The well-founded assumption that they might reinfest appropriate goods should be taken into consideration with respect to storage, especially since it has hitherto been taken for granted that an infestation can only arise from the storage of infested products.  相似文献

The effects of surgical procedures on intestinal motility are still under debate. In order to quantify the effects of duodenotomy on duodenal motility, the present study used the electric impedance technique (IMP). Ten pigs (32-40 kg) were instrumented under general anaesthesia with a central venous catheter (CVC) and a percutaneous enterogastrostomy (PEG). Duodenal phases I-III and the duration of the migrating motor complex (MMC) were measured by an IMP catheter, which was introduced non-invasively into the proximal duodenum via the PEG by endoscopy, or through surgical placement in an invasive manner via duodenotomy. There were no significant differences in the length of interdigestive phases I-III between the groups. In tendency, pigs after laparotomy and duodenotomy demonstrated slightly prolonged median duration of phase I (P = 0.1) and phase III (P = 0.7), while phase II (P = 0.1) and the MMC cycle length (P = 0.6) seemed to be shortened as compared to pigs of the PEG group. In conclusion, simple laparotomy with duodenotomy did not affect the proximal duodenal motility activity measured by the impedance technique.  相似文献

Samples from two streams (Kisco River and the Middle Branch of the Croton River) in the Croton Reservoir system in south-eastern New York State, USA were sampled from May 2000 through to February 2001 in order to document the effect of land use, streamflow and seasonal patterns of application on pesticide concentrations in runoff from developed watersheds. Many of the pesticides detected most commonly in this study are generally used in developed areas, and particularly on turfgrass. Pesticide concentrations were generally higher, and the numbers of compounds were generally larger, in samples from the Kisco River than in samples from the Middle Branch, probably because the Kisco River drainage has a greater population density and is more extensively developed. Four pesticides (2,4-D, 2,4-D-methyl, dicamba and metalaxyl) were detected in at least one sample from the Kisco River at a concentration >1 microg litre(-1), and no pesticides were detected at concentrations >0.4 microg litre(-1) in Middle Branch samples. No human-health-based water-quality standards were exceeded by samples from either site in this study, but samples from the Kisco River contained four insecticides (carbaryl, chlorpyrifos, diazinon and malathion) and one herbicide (2,4-D) in concentrations that exceeded water quality criteria for the protection of aquatic life. The highest concentrations of most compounds occurred during stormflows in both streams in June, September and December, 2000. The lowest concentrations of most compounds at both sites occurred during baseflows from October 2000 through February 2001, even though the concentrations of many compounds increased substantially at the Kisco River site during stormflows in November and December. Detailed data on the variability of pesticide concentrations during stormflows indicate that there may be two sources of pesticides in the Kisco River watershed: (1) elevated concentrations of pesticides during peak flows that occur early in stormflows likely reflect runoff from paved areas, and (2) elevated concentrations during peak flows that occur later in stormflows from areas with lesser amounts of pavement. Data from the Kisco River indicate that the relation between storm discharge and pesticide concentrations varies among compounds, in part because of variation in seasonal application patterns. These variations in the timing of application result in not all stormflows producing increased concentrations of pesticides. Overall, these results indicate the importance of stormflow sampling throughout the year in assessing pesticide fate and transport in urbanized, developed areas.  相似文献

Data from an animal health service in the Punjab of Pakistan showed that 39 adult female buffaloes with haemoglobinuria were 21 times more likely to have serum inorganic phosphorus (serum P) levels < 0.97 mmol/1 than 24 controls sampled during the period of case occurrence (December 1984–March 1985). Age > 7 years or early lactation (1–60 days post partum) were unrelated to the disease. Similarly, symptoms of osteomalacia in 19 multiparous buffaloes were associated with low P (OR = 14.3) but not with age. Subsequently, a serum survey was carried out from February 1985 to July 1987 to investigate serum P variations with season and host factors. Data from 139 farms (426 adult female buffaloes, 468 lactations) indicated strong farm and seasonal effects on serum P. Serum P declined during the study period and was lowest during December–March 1985/1986 and again 1986/1987. Calving season, parity > 1, high pregnancy > 6 months, or daily milk production were not related to serum P in the final model. Seasonal effects were interpreted as soil borne and related to feed changes from maize to berseem in December.  相似文献

Black rot, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, (Xcc), is one of the most serious diseases of crucifers world-wide. Forty-nine genotypes were evaluated for resistance under field conditions in Tanzania after artificial inoculation with Xcc race 1. Open pollinated white cabbage cultivars were generally susceptible, while Portuguese and pointed cabbages exhibited partial resistance. Some F1 white cabbage cultivars were highly susceptible, whereas others exhibited a high level of partial resistance. The most promising of the hybrid cultivars were T-689 F1, Gianty F1, No. 9690 F1, N 66 F1, and SWR-02 F1. Breeding line Badger I-16 exhibited the highest level of resistance of all genotypes. The genotypes accounted for 72.9–75.5% of the variation of the disease severity when assessed on the leaves, and 71.4% of the variation when assessed as internal black rot in heads at harvest. High correlations (equal to or above 0.7) were found between disease severities assessed on leaves three times during the growing season and also with the amount of internal black rot in heads. Leaf loss also was correlated with disease severity. The high genetic determination of the trait and the high correlations between disease assessments indicate that selection for resistance to black rot will be efficient when field screenings are carried out. Evaluation of genotypes for disease severity on leaves during the growing season combined with evaluations of head resistance in the most promising genotypes may be a simple method to select resistant cultivars.  相似文献

Summary Genetic diversity in microsatellites and development of agronomical characters in Nordic oat cultivars (Avena sativa) from the 20th century, ranging from landraces to new cultivars, were studied. A clear development in agronomical characters has taken place in this period: Straw length has been reduced, harvest index has increased and heading date has declined. The persistent oat breeding effort in the northern part of the region was indicated by the data, since cultivars from this region showed higher harvest index. Also adaptation to shorter summers was apparent in cultivars from the most northern part of the area. When comparing cultivars released after 1940 to the landraces, the loss of diversity revealed for the agronomical characters was also indicated by the molecular data. This indicates that a more general loss of diversity has taken place in the period, possibly due to random factors during the breeding process (bottleneck effect). The reduction in diversity revealed by recent cultivars at an agronomical as well as a molecular level emphasises the importance of implementing a conservation strategy for older material in order to secure genetic diversity for future oat breeding efforts.  相似文献

Summary Effects of temperature and photoperiod for donor plant growth on embryo formation in Capsicum annuum anther culture were investigated. Donor plants were grown in glasshouses at minimum temperatures between 16 and 30° C and at photoperiods between 11 and 19 h. Anthers were collected from individual plants over five to nine week periods to test the significance of donor plant age. Embryos were obtained at all temperature regimes with a calculated optimum temperature of 26.4° C. Embryo formation was unaffected by the photoperiods tested. Embryo formation varied among successive samplings. Chemical interactions play a fundamental role in the ecology of marine foodwebs. Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is a ubiquitous marine trace gas that acts as a bioactive compound by eliciting foraging behavior in a range of marine taxa including the copepod Temora longicornis. Production of DMS can rapidly increase following microzooplankton grazing on phytoplankton. Here, we investigated whether grazing-induced DMS elicits an increase in foraging behavior in the copepod Calanus helgolandicus. We developed a semi-automated method to quantify the effect of grazing-mediated DMS on the proportion of the time budget tethered females allocate towards slow swimming, typically associated with feeding. The pooled data showed no differences in the proportion of the 25 min time budget allocated towards slow swimming between high (23.6 ± 9.74%) and low (29.1 ± 18.33%) DMS treatments. However, there was a high degree of variability between behavioral responses of individual copepods. We discuss the need for more detailed species-specific studies of individual level responses of copepods to chemical signals at different spatial scales to improve our understanding of chemical interactions between copepods and their prey.  相似文献

Five female Doberman Pinschers with increased hepatic copper concentrations and persistent (3-4 years) subclinical hepatitis were treated with D-penicillamine for 4 months. Before and after treatment, the dogs underwent clinical, hematologic (red blood cell, white blood cell, and differential and thrombocyte counts), and clinical chemistry (creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, and total bile acid concentrations) examinations, and liver biopsies were examined histologically and their copper content measured quantitatively. No adverse effects were observed during treatment, and CBC and serum chemistry test results did not change. The mean liver copper concentration was 1,036 mg/kg dry matter before treatment and decreased to 407 mg/kg after treatment (P = .03). The copper concentrations had decreased (by between 134 and 1,135 mg/kg dry matter) in all of the dogs. The histopathologic appearance had improved or returned to normal in all 5 dogs. We conclude that D-penicillamine effectively reduced copper retention in these dogs and improved the histopathologic appearance of the lesions. However, because D-penicillamine has both copper-chelating and anti-inflammatory properties, it is not possible to draw conclusions on the etiology of this disease.  相似文献

Background: Copper-associated chronic hepatitis (CACH) recently has been recognized in the Labrador Retriever as an inherited disorder with a late onset of clinical signs. No studies have investigated dietary management for the long-term treatment of this disease or for its potential in delaying the onset of clinical signs in subclinical cases.
Objectives: To investigate the effects of a low-copper diet and zinc gluconate on hepatic copper concentrations in Labrador Retrievers with abnormal hepatic copper concentrations.
Animals: Twenty-four client-owned Labradors that were related to patients affected with CACH and that had been diagnosed with increased hepatic copper concentrations.
Methods: Hepatic copper concentrations were assessed before and after an average of 8 and 16 months of treatment. During this time, all dogs were fed exclusively a low-copper diet. In addition, dogs were assigned to 1 of 2 groups in a randomized double-blind manner to receive a supplement of zinc gluconate or placebo.
Results: Twenty-one dogs completed the study. Hepatic copper concentrations decreased in both groups at recheck 1 (n = 21; group 1, P < .001; group 2, P = .001) and at recheck 2 (n= 16; group 1, P = .03; group 2, P = .04). No difference in hepatic copper concentrations was found between the 2 groups before treatment ( P = .65), at recheck 1 or at recheck 2 ( P = .52–.79).
Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Feeding low-copper diets to Labradors is effective in decreasing hepatic copper concentrations. Adjunctive treatment with zinc does not appear to increase the copper-lowering effects of dietary management.  相似文献
