Alcohol oxidation in rate inhibited by pyrazole, oximes, and amides

Pyrazole, previously reported to inhibit ethanol oxidation in the rat, also effectively blocks the in vivo metabolism of methanol, propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, and isobutanol. A variety of oximes and amides are also effective inhibitors of ethanol metabolism. These various inhibitors may prove important in the elucidation of several facets of alcohol metabolism and also may have application in the treatment of methanol poisoning and in the reduction of the sequelae of the disulfiram-ethanol reaction syndrome in man.     

Laboratory simulation of volcano seismicity

The physical processes generating seismicity within volcanic edifices are highly complex and not fully understood. We report results from a laboratory experiment in which basalt from Mount Etna volcano (Italy) was deformed and fractured. The experiment was monitored with an array of transducers around the sample to permit full-waveform capture, location, and analysis of microseismic events. Rapid post-failure decompression of the water-filled pore volume and damage zone triggered many low-frequency events, analogous to volcanic long-period seismicity. The low frequencies were associated with pore fluid decompression and were located in the damage zone in the fractured sample; these events exhibited a weak component of shear (double-couple) slip, consistent with fluid-driven events occurring beneath active volcanoes.     

Pharmacokinetics of carprofen and firocoxib for medication control in racing greyhounds

Animals used in sport should be treated as required to ensure animal welfare but any such use of medication should also be controlled to ensure integrity. Pharmacokinetic studies on groups of six greyhounds were performed to measure plasma and urine levels of carprofen and firocoxib to inform medication control advice. Using the standard methodology for medication control the Irrelevant Plasma Concentration was determined as 20 and 2 ng/mL for carprofen and firocoxib, respectively. The Irrelevant Urine Concentration was also determined as 0.3 and 2 ng/mL for carprofen and firocoxib, respectively. These Irrelevant Plasma and Urine Concentrations will allow laboratory Screening Limits, Detection Times and Withdrawal Time advice to be determined and publicised by regulators of greyhound racing. The Screening Limits will also inform Recommended Limits of Detection if meat-containing residues of these medications are fed to greyhounds.     

Ecological effects of regime shifts in the Bering Sea and eastern North Pacific Ocean

Large‐scale shifts occurred in climatic and oceanic conditions in 1925, 1947, 1977, 1989 and possibly 1998. These shifts affected the mix and abundance of suites of coexisting species during each period of relative environmental stability—from primary producers to apex predators. However, the 1989 regime shift was not a simple reversal of the 1977 shift. The regime shifts occurred abruptly and were neither random variations nor simple reversals to the previous conditions. Timing of these anomalous environmental events in the North Pacific Ocean appears to be linked to physical and biological responses in other oceanic regions of the world. Changes in the atmospheric pressure can alter wind patterns that affect oceanic circulation and physical properties such as salinity and depth of the thermocline. This, in turn, affects primary and secondary production. Data from the North Pacific indicate that regime shifts can have opposite effects on species living in different domains, or can affect similar species living within a single domain in opposite ways. Climatic forcing appears to indirectly affect fish and marine mammal populations through changes in the distribution and abundance of their predators and prey. Effects of regime shifts on marine ecosystems are also manifested faster at lower trophic levels. Natural variability in the productivity of fish stocks in association with regime shifts indicates that new approaches to managing fisheries should incorporate climatic as well as fisheries effects.     

Clinical pathology of the domestic rabbit. Acquisition and interpretation of samples.

Diagnostic laboratories are receiving increasing numbers of samples from practitioners as they strive to diagnose complex disease processes and manage rabbit cases. Proper acquisition of diagnostic samples and interpretation of results are key skills necessary for successful management of medical cases. This article reviews the collection and interpretation of clinicopathologic samples commonly used in rabbits.     

Production of superoxide anion by bovine pulmonary macrophages challenged with soluble and particulate stimuli

The effects of opsonized zymosan, phorbal myristate acetate, and live Pasteurella haemolytica on superoxide anion production by bovine pulmonary macrophages were determined. The anion responses were dose-dependent for all stimuli, except for unopsonized P haemolytica. The effect of viable P haemolytica on macrophage viability was related to bacterial dosage and the presence of opsonizing antibody. Superoxide responses varied directly with the dose of opsonized live P haemolytica, but indirectly with macrophage viability.     

Effect of yohimbine on xylazine-induced hypoinsulinemia and hyperglycemia in mares

Serum insulin and plasma glucose concentrations were determined in 8 mares. Four IV treatments were studied: xylazine (1.1 mg/kg of body weight); yohimbine (0.125 mg/kg); yohimbine (0.125 mg/kg) followed 5 minutes later by xylazine (1.1 mg/kg); and 5 ml of isotonic saline solution as a control. Blood samples were collected before (time 0) and at 5, 15, 30, 60, 120, and 180 minutes after drug administration. Serum insulin concentration decreased and plasma glucose concentration increased in mares given xylazine. Plasma glucose concentration was unchanged in control mares and in mares given yohimbine or yohimbine followed by xylazine. Serum insulin concentration was unchanged in mares given saline solution, but transiently increased in mares given yohimbine alone. Treatment with yohimbine prevented xylazine-induced hypoinsulinemia and hyperglycemia.     

Intravenous administration of lenperone and glycopyrrolate followed by continuous infusion of sufentanil in dogs: cardiovascular effects

Cardiopulmonary effects of IV administration of lenperone (0.44 mg/kg) and glycopyrrolate (0.11 mg/kg) were determined in 6 healthy adult (2 to 5 years) Pointers during controlled ventilation with oxygen. Sufentanil was then administered as a loading dose (5 micrograms/kg, IV) and continually infused (0.1 microgram/kg/min) for 120 minutes. Lenperone-glycopyrrolate did not significantly affect heart rate, but induced a significant decrease in systemic vascular resistance, rate-pressure product, and mean arterial pressure, and significantly increased cardiac index. Administration of sufentanil did not significantly affect mean arterial pressure. Heart rate and rate-pressure product were significantly decreased during sufentanil infusion. Systemic vascular resistance gradually increased during the 2-hour sufentanil infusion and was not significantly different from base-line values at end of study. Cardiac index was not significantly different from baseline values during sufentanil infusion, except at 90 and 120 minutes, when it was significantly less. As administered in the present study, lenperone, glycopyrrolate, and sufentanil are safe and efficacious in adult dogs.
