The present communication is a continuation of our earlier study on the natural serum haemagglutinin/lectins of Cirrhina mrigala, Clarias batrachus and Heteropneustes fossilis. Sera of Cirrhina mrigala, belonging to the major carp family, could not only agglutinate heterologous rabbit erythrocytes, but also lyse them spontaneously. This lysis of rabbit RBC by Cirrhina mrigala sera was calcium ion dependent and heat sensitive, indicating thereby that the haemolysis was mediated by the fish serum complement system via the classical pathway. Quantification of CH50 and APCH50 levels in the sera of Clarias batrachus and Heteropneustes fossilis as well as in the sera of amphibia, aves and mammals showed that lower vertebrates predominantly possessed an alternative pathway of the complement system, while on the other hand, in the higher vertebrates the major pathway of complement activation was classical. Furthermore sera of Clarias batrachus and Heteropneustes fossilis had opsonins, which could stimulate heterologous rat peritoneal macrophages to engulf Staphylococcus aureus with the production of superoxide anion. From this study we concluded that fishes have been armed with various powerful natural humoral defense systems for their protection against environmental pathogens.  相似文献

We studied the genetic polymorphism among 29 clones of shisham (Dalbergia sissoo Roxb) belonging to different geographic regions using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Out of 30 primers used, only 20 primers generated polymorphism in amplified product. In total 232 bands were amplified with 20 primers, of which 192 (82%) were polymorphic with an average of 9.6 bands/primer. The resolving power (Rp) ranged from 2.14 (Primer 5) to 11.93 (Primer 4). Primer 4 and Primer 3 possessed high Rp value. Polymorphism information content (PIC) ranged from 0.15 (Primer 5) to 0.37 (Primer 4). Primer 4 amplified total 18 bands in 29 genotypes with PIC value of 0.37 hence; this set of primer was most informative. The similarity coefficient analysis revealed two clusters. The first cluster comprised of only 10 clones and the second major cluster comprised of 19 clones. The genetic similarity among 29 clones ranged from 25.86% (clone 10 and 235) to 100% (clone 19 and 59), suggesting a wide genetic base in shisham clones.  相似文献

Purpose

The balance of micronutrients in soils is important in nutrient use efficiency, environmental protection and the sustainability of agro-ecological systems. The deficiency or excess of micronutrients in the plough layer may decrease crop yield and/or quality. Therefore, it is essential to maintain appropriate levels of micronutrients in soil, not only for satisfying plant needs in order to sustain agricultural production but also for preventing any potential build-up of certain nutrients.

Materials and methods

A long-term fertilizer experiment started in 1969 at Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, Odisha, India. Using this experiment, a study was conducted to analyze the balance of micronutrients and their interrelationship. The experiment was composed of ten nutrient management treatments viz. control; nitrogen (N); N + phosphorus (NP); N + potassium (NK); nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK); farmyard manure (FYM); N + FYM; NP + FYM; NK + FYM; and NPK + FYM with three replications. Micronutrients in soil (total and available), added fertilizers and organic manures and in rice plant were analyzed. Besides, atmospheric deposition of the micronutrients to the experimental site was also calculated. A micronutrient balance sheet was prepared by the difference between output and input of total micronutrients.

Results and discussion

Application of FYM alone or in combination with chemical fertilizer increased the diethylenetriamine pentaacetate (DTPA)-extractable Fe, Mn and Zn over the control treatment. The treatment with NPK + FYM had the highest soil DTPA-extractable Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu after 41 years of cropping and fertilization. Application of chemical fertilizers without P decreased the DTPA-extractable Zn over the control while the inclusion of P in the fertilizer treatments maintained it on a par with the control. The application of P fertilizer and FYM either alone or in combination significantly increased the contents of total Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu in soil mainly due to their micronutrient content and atmospheric depositions. A negative balance of Zn was observed in the N, NP, NK and NPK treatments, while a positive balance observed in the remaining treatments. The balance of Mn was negative in all the treatments, due to higher uptake by the rice crop than its addition.

Conclusions

Long-term application of chemical fertilizers together with FYM maintained the availability of micronutrients in soil and, thus, their uptake by rice crop.

Canine leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum is enzootic in the North American foxhound population. Currently available chemotherapy for canine leishmaniasis is not completely effective and relapses are common in treated dogs. Pentamidine and related aromatic diamidines possess broad spectrum antiprotozoal activity. The in vitro antileishmanial activities of 35 aromatic cationic molecules were determined, using pentamidine as the reference drug. The compounds were examined for activity against promastigotes of L. infantum isolated from a foxhound from Virginia. The compounds most active against Leishmania parasites were reversed amidines. Compound 9, a reversed amidine, exhibited the highest activity against L. infantum, with a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) of 0.0042 microM compared with 14.2 microM for pentamidine. Antileishmanial activities of nine compounds were at least 1000-fold higher relative to the reference drug. Results from this study indicate that several pentamidine-related compounds warrant further investigation as possible new agents for the treatment of canine leishmaniasis.  相似文献

Paratuberculosis (PTB) is a chronic infectious enteritis of ruminants, caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) that brings huge economic loss to the dairy farmers. The study was conducted to explore the association of selected SNPs in IFNG, SLC11A1, ANKRA2 and PGLYRP1 genes with resistance to PTB disease in Indian cattle population. A case-control resource population was established based on the results of diagnostic tests used for detection of MAP infection status viz. ELISA, Johnin PPD test, faecal microscopy and IS900 blood PCR. The PCR-RFLP method was used for genotyping of SNPs. SNPs rs109453173 in SLC11A1, rs110853455 in IFNG and rs41933863 in ANKRA2 genes were significantly (P<0.05) associated with resistance to MAP infection. For SNP rs109453173, GG genotype and G allele was found to be associated with resistance against MAP infection than CC and CG genotypes and C allele, respectively. For SNP rs110853455, AG genotype was found to be associated with susceptibility to MAP infection than AA and GG genotype. For SNP rs41933863, the AG genotype provided three and six times more resistance against MAP infection than GG and AA genotype. The results of this study are suggestive of SNPs rs109453173, rs110853455 and rs41933863 as potential markers for screening MAP resistant cattle and a breeding programme favouring GG genotype and G allele for rs109453173, AG genotype for rs41933863 and against AG genotype for rs110853455 might confer resistance against MAP infection in Indian cattle. However, investigation of these SNPs in an independent and larger population will warrant the strength of association for resistance against MAP infection in cattle.

To examine the effect of zinc (Zn) application method on the utilization of phosphorus (P) from applied P fertilizer, a field experiment was conducted on basmati rice–wheat rotation with combinations of Zn levels (0, soil application of 2.5 kg Zn ha 1 and two foliar applications of 2.0 kg Zn ha 1) and P levels (0, soil application of 8.7, 17.5 and 26.2 kg P ha 1). The highest pooled grain yields of basmati rice and wheat were obtained with soil application of 17.5 kg P ha 1 and foliar applications of 2 kg Zn ha 1. Foliar applications of Zn increased the P concentration in grain and straw and the total P uptake by basmati rice and the P concentration in flag leaves of wheat significantly, while soil or foliar application of Zn increased the total P uptake of wheat. Phosphorus application increased the Zn concentration in flag leaves, grain and straw of basmati rice and in grain and straw of wheat and the total Zn uptake of both crops. Phosphorus levels up to 17.5 kg P ha 1 increased utilization efficiency of soil or foliar application of Zn. Zinc application increased the P utilization efficiency of basmati rice and wheat up to 17.5 kg P ha 1 level; foliar Zn application was more effective in a wheat crop than a rice crop.  相似文献

Relatively few studies have investigated mistletoe infestation of tree species in urban settings, and even fewer considered infestation of alien tree species. Here, mistletoe infestation incidence and intensity were studied in Durban, South Africa. The relationship of infestation to tree CBH and height was examined in detail for the mistletoe species Erianthemum dregei. Although E. dregei is known to have a wide range of host taxa, we report E. dregei infestation on 27 new host species for the first time. E. dregei occurred on 30 host species with a preference for the alien host tree Melia azedarach in our study area. The relationship between infestation and CBH indicated that the trees (irrespective of species) of ≥200 cm were more susceptible to the mistletoe attack. The implications of this pattern, as well as those of high host diversity and especially of infestation of alien trees are discussed in a conservation perspective.  相似文献

2004-2006年间,调查印度的加瓦尔喜马拉雅山丘中部南北坡的传统农林复合系统(作物+树)中生产力状况。为了分析农林复合系统的植物社会学特性,在南北坡共选育19个树种,其中在南坡有17个树种,在北坡有12个树种。最优树种为Grewia optiva,朴树(Celtis australis)和苦楝(Melia azedarach)。结果表明:南北坡上的树种的年生产量分别为3101kg&#183;ha^-1.a^-1和3775kg&#183;ha^-1.a^-1。在南北坡的所有树种中,Goptiva有最高的生产量,其他种依次为苦楝(M.azedarach),橡树(Quercus leucotrichophora)和朴树(Caustralis)。优势农作物为龙爪稷(Eleusine coracana,夏季谷物),菜豆(Phaseolus vulgaris,夏季油料作物),小麦(Triticum aestivum,冬季作物)。北坡的平均农作物生产量比南坡的高16%。北坡的单一农作物系统中的农作物产量比南坡的高。在南北坡,树种和农作物年生产量都有明显差别。农林复合系统中,树种和农作物的生产量比单一农作物系统中的高24%(北坡)和21%(南坡)。图1表5参33。  相似文献

A large-effect QTL for grain yield under drought conditions (qtl12.1) was reported in a rice mapping population derived from Vandana and Way Rarem. Here, we measured the effect of qtl12.1 on grain yield and associated traits in 21 field trials: ten at IRRI in the Philippines and 11 in the target environment of eastern India. The relative effect of the QTL on grain yield increased with increasing intensity of drought stress, from having no effect under well-watered conditions to having an additive effect of more than 40% of the trial mean in the most severe stress treatments. The QTL improved grain yield in nine out of ten direct-seeded upland trials where drought stress was severe or moderate, but no effect was measured under well-watered aerobic conditions or under transplanted lowland conditions. These trials confirm that qtl12.1 has a large and consistent effect on grain yield under upland drought stress conditions, in a wide range of environments.  相似文献
