Actually, there is a growing interest in finding efficient low-cost materials that allow the removal of chemical substances from water in order to decrease the environmental impact. The use of nanoscale systems is a new area of investigation for the elimination of polluting agents from water among other useful applications in science and technology. In this work, removal of indigo blue in water solutions has been evaluated using Fe/Cu nanoparticles and composites of C/FeCu nanoalloy. The first composite was using carbon obtained by pyrolysis of sewage sludge with Fe/Cu nanoparticles (MCL-NP); the second one was made with commercial activated carbon and FeCu nanoparticles (CAC-NP). Synthesis of materials were carried out by the sodium borohydride reduction of FeSO4?7H2O and CuSO4?5H2O aqueous mixture. Batch adsorption and isotherm experiments were carried out in order to know the behavior of each adsorbent material employed. The experimental data were adjusted to Langmuir, Freundlich, and BET models.  相似文献

The aqueous extract of Rhizophora mangle bark and its polyphenolic fractions showed remarkable in vitro antiinflammatory activity in a preliminary study. Astrocytes, the most abundant cell population in the central nervous system (CNS), are essential for normal neurological function. We show that astrocytes are allocated to spatial domains in mouse spinal cord and brain in accordance with their embryonic sites of origin in the ventricular zone. These domains remain stable throughout life without evidence of secondary tangential migration, even after acute CNS injury. Domain-specific depletion of astrocytes in ventral spinal cord resulted in abnormal motor neuron synaptogenesis, which was not rescued by immigration of astrocytes from adjoining regions. Our findings demonstrate that region-restricted astrocyte allocation is a general CNS phenomenon and reveal intrinsic limitations of the astroglial response to injury.  相似文献

MOPECO: an economic optimization model for irrigation water management   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Water is a natural, sometimes scarce, and fundamental resource for life, essential both for agriculture in many regions of the world and also to achieve sustainability in production systems. Maximizing net returns with the available resources is of the utmost importance, but doing so is a complex problem, owing to the many factors that affect this process (e.g. climatic variability, irrigation system configuration, production costs, subsidy policies). The MOPECO model is a tool for identifying optimal production plans, and water irrigation management strategies. The model estimates crop yield, production and gross margin as a function of the irrigation depth. Finally, these gross margin functions are used to determine an optimum cropping pattern and irrigation strategy to maximize the gross margin on a farm in a specific scenario. Since the relationships between the variables are generally non-linear and the number of alternative strategies is quite large, the optimum process is complex and computationally intensive. Genetic algorithms are therefore used to identify optimal strategies. This paper describes the MOPECO model, which comprises three computing modules: (1) estimation of net water requirements; (2) derivation of the relationship between gross margin and irrigation depth; and (3) identification of the crop planning and the water volumes to be applied. The results obtained by applying the MOPECO model to a specific irrigable area in a semi-arid area of Spain, with great deficits and high water costs, are also included and discussed. These results usually show that the irrigation depth for maximum benefits is lower than that necessary to obtain maximum production. In some areas of Spain, horticultural crops are nearly always part of the optimum alternative. The crops that become part of the optimum alternative are mainly horticultural crops with a high gross margin and low water requirements. The irrigation depths selected for the ideal crop rotation are included among the irrigation depth of maximum economic efficiency and the maximum gross margin irrigation depth. Both are lower than that necessary for the maximum yield. This model helps farmers, extension services, and other agents to analyse, make decisions and optimize water management.Communicated by A. Pathogenic and non-pathogenic free-living amoebae from the Root Zone Method (RZM) of wastewater treatment were investigated. Ten reed beds planted on four different substrate types were compared for their efficiency of removal of free-living amoebae. Reed beds planted on coarse substrates generally gave the highest removal rates (up to 100%) while those planted in soil gave the lowest (60.4%). Possible reasons for differences in removal efficiencies are discussed. Thirteen species representing nine genera of free-living amoebae were isolated; these included three species of Acanthamoeba (A. astronyxis, A. polyphaga and A.rhysodes) all of which were pathogenic for mice. The implications for RZM design of the presence of potentially pathogenic free-living amoebae in the effluent are discussed.  相似文献

In olive oils, relationships between oxidative stability, glyceridic composition, and antioxidant content were investigated. Lipid matrices, obtained by purification of olive and high-oleic sunflower oils, were spiked with hydroxytyrosol, alpha-tocopherol, and mixtures of them and then subjected to oxidation in a Rancimat apparatus at 100 degrees C. At the same concentration of antioxidants, induction time (IT) decreased as the unsaturation rate of the matrix increased, but only fair correlations were found with fatty acid composition. Oxidative susceptibility (OS(TAG)) was calculated as a function of the relative oxidation rate of the triacylglycerols, and a linear relationship-IT (h) = (a + b)OS(TAG)-between induction time and this parameter showed a good correlation coefficient (r > 0.990, p < 0.001). In the case of matrices with a single antioxidant, origin ordinate (a) and slope (b) can be calculated as a function of the antioxidant concentration. In matrices spiked with mixtures of hydroxytyrosol and alpha-tocopherol, a simple relationship between the coefficients a and b and the concentration of antioxidants cannot be established because additive and subtractive effects occur depending on the relative concentrations of both antioxidants. However, approximate values for these coefficients can be obtained, allowing the estimation of the oil stability. In various olive oils, an acceptable agreement was found between the IT experimentally determined and that calculated from the oil composition. These results confirmed that the Rancimat stability of olive oils mainly depends on triacylglycerol composition and concentrations of o-diphenols and alpha-tocopherol.  相似文献

Curtis et al. (Research Articles, 2 March 2007, p. 1243) claimed discovery of a human neuronal migratory stream to the olfactory bulb along a putative lateral ventricular extension.
