The production of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis (L.) natural spat in Europe has decreased almost by 60% in the past ten years. Thus, the importance of the production of oyster spat in hatcheries is evident. One of the critical steps in hatchery production is broodstock conditioning, especially difficult in autumn, when gonadal development is in resting period. Conditioning is influence by temperature, photoperiod and nutrition. In this work, the effects of two temperature and three photoperiod regimes on the conditioning of O. edulis were studied for three years by stereological analyses and registering number and dates of spawning and larval yield. Temperature had a positive effect on the gonadal development of O. edulis during conditioning. The percentages of germinal cells in oysters conditioned with a gradient of temperature (14–18°C) were double compared to oysters conditioned at 15°C. Oysters conditioned with longer photoperiods showed higher percentages of germinal cells. There was no interaction between temperature and photoperiod. Spawning was observed in the oysters treated with daylight (8–16 h) ten weeks from the beginning of conditioning. Flat oysters conditioned with 8 h and 8–12 h of daylight delayed the first spawning for a month. Total larval production was higher in the oysters treated with the longest daylight gradient. Gonadal and gametogenic development was a non‐synchronic process and the spawning extended for around two months. A protocol for flat oyster broodstock conditioning in autumn by using both a gradient of temperature (14–18°C) and daylight (8–16 h) is proposed.  相似文献

Spatial and seasonal mobilization trends of metals in surface water were evaluated in the US–Mexico San Pedro River (SPR). Water samples were collected at five sampling stations for the analysis of dissolved oxygen, pH, electric conductivity, sulfates, and metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn). Quality of the water was characterized through Ecological Criteria of Water Quality (ECWQ) established in Mexico and Water Quality Criteria (Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)). High total metal concentrations were detected as follows: Fe?>?Cu?>?Mn?>?Zn?>?Pb?>?Cd. Metal concentrations were slightly higher in dry season than in rainy season: Cd (below detection limit (BDL)–0.21 mg L?1), Cu (BDL–13 mg L?1), Fe (0.16–345 mg L?1), Mn (0.12–52 mg L?1), Pb (BDL–0.48 mg L?1), and Zn (0.03–17.8 mg L?1). Low pH and dissolved oxygen values as well as high sulfate content were detected in both seasons. High values of metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn) were detected at station E1 representing pollution source, as well as at stations E2 (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn), E3 (Fe, Mn, Pb), and E4 and E5 (Fe, Mn). Detected concentrations exceeded maximum permissible established in ECWQ and Water Quality Criteria (EPA). Efflorescence salts on sediments in the dry season could increase levels of metals in water column. This study provides valuable information on the potential mobility of metals in surface water of SPR located in an arid environment where transport processes are strongly linked to climate. The information derived from this study should help the regional and national authorities to address present environmental regulations.  相似文献

To establish a reliable protocol for the broodstock conditioning of the oyster Ostrea edulis (Linnaeus 1758) in hatcheries is important to obtain the best number of viable larvae all year even outside the natural season for maturation and spawning. Hatchery production of bivalves depends on their initial gonadal maturation state, which is linked to season and several other factors, such as temperature, daylight, salinity and food supply. Ration and diet composition are important in broodstock conditioning because food availability affects fecundity and gametogenic development. In this work, the effect of food ration on O. edulis conditioning was studied in autumn and winter. The results of this study showed that the broodstock conditioned with a food ration of 6% and 9% produces the highest number of larvae in autumn and winter. These food rations produced rapid gonadal development and larval release in a short period with a similar larval production. The oysters conditioned with a food ration of 3% delayed larval release and produced a significantly lower number of larvae in autumn. In the 9% ration treatment, the percentages of mortality were significantly higher in both autumn and winter. Thus, a 6% food ration is likely to be the most suitable for flat oyster conditioning combined with a gradient of temperature (14–18°C) and a gradient of daylight (8–16 h).  相似文献

Salmonid females invest heavily in reproduction, through gamete production, habitat selection and maternal care. Habitat selection and maternal care are expected to provide shelter for eggs against scouring and predators. However, females also tend to produce variable egg sizes, and this trait may interact with habitat quality to influence the survival of offspring. In this study, we aimed at evaluating the role of female habitat selection on egg survival conditional on individual egg size and female body size. We monitored female reproductive activity in two natural rivers for 3 years, in order to relate nest characteristics to female body size. Bigger females dug deeper nests at lower shear stress force. Right after the end of nest construction, we sampled a part of the eggs laid by each female, measured them individually, and placed them back using capsules within their original position in the nest. At time of hatching, the capsules within the nest were collected and individual egg mortality was assessed. Our results indicate that scouring was the main driver for mortality (75%) and that nest burial depth and shear stress force above the nest both influenced scouring. However, subsequent survival was influenced by neither nest characteristics, individual egg size, nor the interaction between both. It is therefore expected that traits or tactics that reduce nest scouring probability should be under strong selection.  相似文献

Toxocara canis is a common intestinal helminth found in dogs. In humans, it is a cause of Visceral Larva Migrans (VLM), a zoonosis rarely studied in Mexico. The aim of this study is to examine, by means of the indirect haemaglutination test (IHAT), the prevalence of antibodies of T. canis in the serum of stray dogs in Mexico City. Embryo transfer using cryopreserved B. indicus embryos results in low pregnancy rates. The low viability of B. indicus embryos is likely a result of their low freezability relative to embryos from other species, notably B. taurus. Freezability is probably related to the quantity of lipid droplets in the embryonic cells. However, the mechanism underlying this association is unknown. Using multiphoton and transmission electron microscopy, the proportion, volume, morphology and composition of lipid droplets in fresh and cryopreserved B. indicus and B. taurus embryos were studied. B. indicus embryos have more droplets than B. taurus and a greater percentage of lipid droplets in clusters (34% vs. 24%; < 0.05). Also, B. indicus individual droplets are of greater volume than those of B. taurus (47 μm3 vs. 34 μm3; < 0.05). After freezing, the percentage of clusters decreased in B. indicus (11% vs. 5%; < 0.05), while in B. taurus they increased (2% vs. 7%; < 0.05). Freezing influenced the lipid droplet morphology, increasing the number of cracked droplets in B. indicus embryos (33% fresh vs. 62% frozen; p < 0.05), but not in B. taurus embryos (35% fresh vs. 34% frozen; ns). Regarding composition, saturated lipid droplets prevail in B. indicus embryos, contrary to B. taurus embryos. We observed differences in lipid droplet organization, proportion, volume, morphology and composition between B. indicus and B. taurus embryos which are altered in opposite directions following freezing.  相似文献

Pathogenic and non-pathogenic free-living amoebae from the Root Zone Method (RZM) of wastewater treatment were investigated. Ten reed beds planted on four different substrate types were compared for their efficiency of removal of free-living amoebae. Reed beds planted on coarse substrates generally gave the highest removal rates (up to 100%) while those planted in soil gave the lowest (60.4%). Possible reasons for differences in removal efficiencies are discussed. Thirteen species representing nine genera of free-living amoebae were isolated; these included three species of Acanthamoeba (A. astronyxis, A. polyphaga and A.rhysodes) all of which were pathogenic for mice. The implications for RZM design of the presence of potentially pathogenic free-living amoebae in the effluent are discussed.  相似文献

In olive oils, relationships between oxidative stability, glyceridic composition, and antioxidant content were investigated. Lipid matrices, obtained by purification of olive and high-oleic sunflower oils, were spiked with hydroxytyrosol, alpha-tocopherol, and mixtures of them and then subjected to oxidation in a Rancimat apparatus at 100 degrees C. At the same concentration of antioxidants, induction time (IT) decreased as the unsaturation rate of the matrix increased, but only fair correlations were found with fatty acid composition. Oxidative susceptibility (OS(TAG)) was calculated as a function of the relative oxidation rate of the triacylglycerols, and a linear relationship-IT (h) = (a + b)OS(TAG)-between induction time and this parameter showed a good correlation coefficient (r > 0.990, p < 0.001). In the case of matrices with a single antioxidant, origin ordinate (a) and slope (b) can be calculated as a function of the antioxidant concentration. In matrices spiked with mixtures of hydroxytyrosol and alpha-tocopherol, a simple relationship between the coefficients a and b and the concentration of antioxidants cannot be established because additive and subtractive effects occur depending on the relative concentrations of both antioxidants. However, approximate values for these coefficients can be obtained, allowing the estimation of the oil stability. In various olive oils, an acceptable agreement was found between the IT experimentally determined and that calculated from the oil composition. These results confirmed that the Rancimat stability of olive oils mainly depends on triacylglycerol composition and concentrations of o-diphenols and alpha-tocopherol.  相似文献
