Crops respond to N deficiency through a reduction in resource capture and/or resource use efficiency. The objective of this paper is to examine whether differences in this response pattern are associated with either metabolic group (C3 vs. C4) or botanical classification (mono- vs. dicotyledons). Hereto, we analysed the effect of N deficiency on the relationships between N uptake, LAI, and biomass accumulation, for maize, sorghum, wheat, canola, tall fescue, and sunflower, grown in experiments in either France or Australia. Maize and tall fescue maintained LAI per unit biomass (measure of resource capture) at the expense of N uptake per unit LAI (measure of resource use efficiency). Wheat and canola had the opposite response, whereas sunflower and sorghum were intermediate. In general, C4 species reduced N uptake per unit LAI more than C3 species. Species differences in the effect of N deficiency on resource use efficiency were associated with differences in the SLN or in the N storage capacity of the stems. For wheat, canola, and tall fescue, SLN declined with increasing LAI under high N conditions, and the minimum crop SLN under N deficiency was only marginally lower than under high N conditions. For sorghum, sunflower, and maize, crop SLN under high N changed little with increasing LAI, but the minimum crop SLN under N deficiency was considerably lower than under high N. Sorghum and maize were the only species that substantially decreased stem N uptake per unit LAI under N deficiency. Overall, our data suggest that C3 species are better able to maintain resource use efficiency under N stress than C4 species, and a survey of literature suggests this may be because in C4 species, the critical SLN for radiation use efficiency is higher than the critical SLN for leaf expansion, whereas the opposite is the case for C3 species. We hypothesise that species differences in response to N deficiency could be associated with these differences in critical SLN, which in turn could be a consequence of the lower photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency of C3 crops.  相似文献

A set of 24 microsatellite markers was identified in the artichoke genome, using various approaches. A genomic library allowed the development of 14 SSR markers, whereas the other 10 were obtained from gene intron/UTR regions or from other species. Allelic variation was scored in C. cardunculus (artichoke, cultivated cardoon, and wild cardoon) samples, and in other wild Cynara allies. For the 23 polymorphic loci, a total of 165 alleles were scored, 135 of which in the artichoke primary genepool, and the remaining ones in the other Cynara species. Some allele combinations were able to identify artichoke varietal types, and some alleles were unique to specific groups. This makes these markers potentially useful in product traceability and in contributing to the saturation of genetic maps. The percentage of shared alleles between C. cardunculus taxonomic groups, and Nei’s genetic distances indicated that wild cardoons from the Eastern Mediterranean were more closely related to artichoke and less to cultivated cardoon in comparison to wild cardoons from the Western Mediterranean, and the genetic distance between the two wild cardoon genepools was rather high. The UPGMA dendrogram based on Nei’s genetic distances revealed that artichokes formed a fairly defined cluster, whereas Eastern wild cardoons occupied another branch, and Western wild cardoons were clustered together with cultivated cardoons. The transferability of microsatellite markers to other Cynara wild species was quite good. Sequencing alleles at three loci showed that, apart from microsatellite length variation, point mutations and insertion/deletions were quite abundant especially when comparing C. cardunculus to the other Cynara species. In the sequenced regions, some SNPs were identified which distinguished artichoke on one side, and cultivated and wild cardoon on the other, while other SNPs were apportioned according to the geographic distribution of Cynara wild species.  相似文献

The predator Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) has been used as a natural enemy to control herbivorous insects in eucalyptus plantations. However, because of the short co-evolutionary history of the predator with this imported plant species, the defensive compounds of eucalyptus may have a negative effect on the predator. Therefore, the survival and development of P. nigrispinus were studied on eucalyptus (Eucalyptus urophylla; exotic host plant) and guava (Psidium guajava; native host plant). P. nigrispinus performance was indeed superior on guava plants than on eucalyptus. The number of fertile eggs and nymphal survival were 52.6% and 12.0% on guava compared with 20.0% and 1.3% on eucalyptus, respectively. Longevity of P. nigrispinus was 115 days on guava and 98 days on eucalyptus. This shows that the predator is not yet fully adapted to the exotic host plant. One possible reason is that the plant toxic compounds in eucalyptus act on this predator by antibiosis.  相似文献

In an attempt to find effective control measures againstColletotrichum coccodes, an emerging pathogen causing root rot on tomato in northern Italy, four experimental trials were carried out during the years 2005 and 2006 in Piedmont and Liguria in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the combination of different rootstocks (Beaufort F1, He Man F1, Maxifort) with various fumigants. In the presence of medium to high disease incidence, the best results were obtained by combining the use of a resistant tomato rootstock with soil fumigation with dimethyl disulfide at 40 or 80 gm−2 or metham sodium at 192 g m−2. Chloropicrin, applied at 20 g m−2, and the tested rootstocks alone, did not enable effective control of the pathogen. The need to monitor the appearance of new diseases and the resurgence of old ones is stressed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate plication of the free wall of the left ventricle, which reduces the left ventricular area and volume, as a method to improve the left ventricular systolic function without cardiopulmonary bypass. ANIMALS: 8 mixed-breed adult dogs. PROCEDURE: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) was induced in each dog by administration of doxorubicin (30 mg/m2, i.v., q 21 d for 168 days).Two dogs died during induction of cardiomyopathy. Plication surgery was performed in 4 dogs. Two dogs did not ondergo to surgery (control group). Values for cardiac output (CO), 2-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography, arterial blood pressure, electrocardiography, blood cell counts, and serum biochemical analyses were recorded after induction of DCM (baseline) and 1, 2, 7, 15, 21, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 days after plication surgery. Ambulatory ECG (Holter) recordings were conducted for 24 hours on the day of surgery. RESULTS: 1 dog died after plication surgery. The remaining dogs undergoing ventricular plication had a significant improvement in CO, ejection fraction, and fractional shortening and reductions of left ventricular area and volume after surgery. Electrocardiographic and Holter recordings revealed premature ventricular complexes, which resolved without treatment during the first week after surgery. Clinical condition of the control dogs declined, and these 2 dogs died approximately 40 days after induction of cardiomyopathy. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Plication of the free wall of the left ventricle improved left ventricular systolic function in dogs with doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy. Additional studies are needed to evaluate its application in dogs with naturally developing DCM.  相似文献
