In order to investigate the larval population structure, specimens of Engraulis encrasicolus larvae from five different locations in the Strait of Sicily were analyzed by means of otolith readings, morphometric and genetic techniques. The distribution of age in day, identified by means of the otolith readings and associated with the oceanographic parameters, was useful to identify possible spawning areas and transport dynamics. The presence of more than one spawning area suggested the possibility that two or more sub‐populations may co‐exist in the study area. The morphometric characteristics were more adequate than genetic parameters to discriminate the different larval groups. The most relevant variables for the separation were the mouth length (ML) and the body diameter (BD). The population structure by means of genetic data reported the presence of two phylogroups co‐occurring among samples in each sampling locations specimens. The pattern of genetic divergence among anchovy larvae in the Strait of Sicily was congruent with previous studies conducted on adult populations present in other Mediterranean areas with different molecular markers. The habitat‐specific nature of the morphological variation and the lack of corresponding genetic variation among larvae from the different locations suggested that the observed differences in morphology could be linked to environmental parameters. The body form differences among different larvae samples could reflect the nutritional status of larvae. In fact, these differences were found among anchovy larvae collected in areas with different oxygen and fluorescence, which is an index of primary productivity and is linked to the availability of food for anchovy larvae. 相似文献
This study presents data on a local population of short-beaked common dolphin monitored in the waters off Ischia Island (Gulf of Naples, Italy) over a 16-year period (2000-2015). We examine dolphin occurrence and distribution and perform photoidentification analysis.
The data presented support the hypothesis that the waters around Ischia Island represent a feeding area, as well as a calving and an important nursery area for this local population, providing favourable conditions in which to give birth and raise calves.
The levelling-off of the photoidentification curves together with the continuous decline of the encounter rate lead us to believe that the area has been a hotspot for a local population (mainly resident) for years and that now this population is dying (has died) or is moving (has moved) to other locations.
Several expanding human activities at sea have the potential to impact on the common dolphin in the study area, the most significant possibly being habitat disturbance and degradation (including traffic and noise pollution) and overexploitation of food resources by the fishery.
The data presented in this study offer a strong argument for explicit and urgent population-specific conservation and management strategies to be developed and applied locally for common dolphins, considering that they rely on the region for important biological processes.

Lateralization (i.e. left–right asymmetries in the brain and behaviour) has been documented in all vertebrate classes, while evidences for invertebrates are limited. To the best of our knowledge, there is no information about behavioural asymmetries in the order Coleoptera. In this research, we investigated the lateralization of mating traits in two major pests of stored products: the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), and the confused flour beetle, Tribolium confusum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Both T. confusum and S. oryzae males showed population-level left-biased copulation approaches of potential mates. Interestingly, T. confusum and S. oryzae males performing left-biased copulation attempts achieved higher mating success over right-biased males. Furthermore, S. oryzae males periodically exhibited a typical head wagging behaviour, which consists of waving the rostrum laterally across the female thorax and then resting the rostrum on the mid thorax. This behaviour was right-biased, even in the majority of males that previously showed left-biased copulation attempts. The quantification of mating displays could allow comparisons with other strains, in order to evaluate the impact of a given host or of the rearing methods on the mating traits of S. oryzae and T. confusum. Overall, this is the first report of lateralization of mating traits in Coleoptera. Furthermore, this research adds basic knowledge to the reproductive behaviour of S. oryzae and T. confusum. 相似文献
This study was undertaken by simulating the effects of increasing the temperature and CO2 values on the incidence and severity of F. equiseti on wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) and radish (Raphanus sativus), under phytotron conditions. Two sets of 3 trials were carried out in which eight different temperature and CO2 combinations were tested:1) 400–450 ppm CO2, 18–22 °C; 2) 800–850 ppm CO2, 18–22 °C; 3) 400–450 ppm CO2, 22–26 °C, 4) 800–850 ppm CO2, 22–26 °C, 5) 400–450 ppm CO2, 26–30 °C; 6) 800–850 ppm CO2, 26–30 °C; 7) 400–450 ppm CO2, 14–18 °C; 8) 800–850 ppm CO2, 14–18 °C. The temperature and CO2 levels were significant factors of influence on disease incidence (DI) and severity (DS) in all the trials, and their combination significantly influenced the DI and DS of F. equiseti leaf spot on both hosts. Disease incidence and severity increased on wild rocket at 850 ppm of CO2, in comparison to 450 ppm, in each tested temperature range. The highest CO2 value on radish, for all the tested temperature regimes, caused an increase in DI and DS, which resulted statistically significant at the highest tested temperature range. The results obtained in this study add more concern to the possible negative effects of the spread of F. equiseti on vegetables in Italy as well as in other areas suffering from increased temperatures as a consequence of climate changes. 相似文献
A remote sensing-based approach was implemented to detect the effect of a late spring frost on beech forests in the Mediterranean mountain region. The analysis of spatio-temporal variability of frost effects on normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) highlighted the distribution of the canopy damage across the forest according to geomorphic factors such as slope, aspect, and altitude.
Context
Increased intensity and frequency of extreme temperatures such as late spring frosts and heat waves represent the main drivers affecting forest ecosystem structure and composition in the Mediterranean region.
Aims
The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a late spring frost disturbance, which occurred during spring 2016 in southern Italy, through the assessment of the spatial pattern of the damage to the beech forest canopy associated with the peak decrease in normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), and the analysis of the NDVI temporal recovery after this frost disturbance.
Methods
The forest areas affected by frost were detected through the NDVI differencing technique based on Landsat 8 (OLI/TIRS) imagery time series. The influence of local geomorphic factors (i.e., aspect, elevation, and slope) on forest NDVI patterns was assessed by means of a generalized additive model (GAM).
Results
A rather counterintuitive NDVI patterns emerged according to the forest exposition, with NDVI significantly higher on the north facing areas than the southerly ones. The main canopy damage occurred at about 1250 m and reached up to 1500 m asl, representing the altitudinal range affected by the frost disturbance. Finally, the full canopy recovery occurred within 3 months of the frost event.
Conclusion
The analysis of seasonal Landsat 8 image time series related to local geomorphic factors, such as aspect, slope, and altitude, and plant phenology on a frost event date, contributed to highlight the NDVI spatio-temporal variation and canopy recovery of a Mediterranean mountain beech forest.
Pine plantations are an important wood source in Brazil, with Pinus taeda being most frequently planted. Most pinewood is directed to the paper and pulp industry, but there is an increasing demand for wood for solid end-uses, requiring large stems from longer rotations which can be obtained using P. taeda as the canopy in two-aged stands. We evaluated radial growth and wood density at different stem heights of P. taeda in the highlands of Southern Brazil over a production period of 36 years and subjected to shelterwood harvest. Cross-sectional disks were obtained from 15 trees in different stem heights; 10 were used for growth analyses and 5 for growth and density analyses. We used disk images and X-ray techniques for growth and density analyses, respectively. Samples were analyzed for ring (width and density), earlywood, and latewood (width, density, and proportion). Ring width varied between 0.4 and 1.7 cm, with the widest rings in the first years (3–5 years.) of growth. Ring density increased with age, with higher densities on the lower stem portions. Mature wood started to be formed from the 16th ring onwards. Shelterwood harvest affected both ring width and density, but the effects on ring width lasted for at least 5 years, while the effects on wood density were short-lasting. Mature P. taeda trees increased their size after the shelterwood harvest without compromising their wood density. Longer production periods of P. taeda as retained trees in the canopy of two-aged stands provide high-quality wood for structural purposes.

Unreduced (2n) gametes are an interesting tool for polyploidisation and the creation of genetic variation in plant breeding.
Especially in ornamentals, polyploidisation can broaden attractive features within a species. A Begonia collection was screened on the occurrence of 2n pollen with the aid of four different techniques: pollen size measurement,
flow cytometric analysis of nuclei isolated from germinated and non germinated pollen, investigation of the microsporogenesis
and analysis of progeny. In ten of the 70 screened genotypes (B. dregei, B. pearcei, B. ‘Anna Christina’, B. ‘Bubbles’, B. ‘Florence Rita’, B. ‘Orococo’, B. ‘Rubaiyat’, B. ‘Spatflacier’, B. ‘Tamo’ and B276), large pollen were observed with a rather spherical than normal ellipsoidal shape. Flow cytometric data
proved that these aberrantly shaped pollen were associated with 2n ploidy levels, although they were not always viable. Meiotic
aberrations in these large pollen producers resulted mainly in dyads although also monads, triads and polyads were observed.
Successful crosses were obtained with B. dregei, B. ‘Orococo’, and B276 as pollinators; DNA content had increased in all or a part of the progeny. The results show that the

Although most potential human pathogens (PHPs) can be inactivated during composting, the risk that such substrates represent for human health remains largely unknown due to the shortage of information on presence and abundance of PHPs in finished composts. This study focused on the assessment of Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), and the opportunistic fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus in different compost commodities. A total of fifteen European composts, made from different waste types and processes, were evaluated for the occurrence of the selected PHPs using molecular and traditional techniques. The analyses were extended to five biochar because of their growing application in agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, and private gardening.
Enteric bacteria were detected by molecular methods in eight out of fifteen composts; however, viable propagules were confirmed for L. monocytogenes only in two composts, and for STEC in three more composts. No bacterial pathogens were found in biochar. Living A. fumigatus was present in eleven composts and two biochars. None of the eighteen isolates contained single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) relevant for resistance to azole fungicides. The role of compost and biochar as a source of PHPs in the environment and the risk for human health is discussed. 相似文献
