Flooding is one of the major hazards of rice production for the rainfed lowland rice ecosystem, and tolerant cultivars are
urgently needed to help protect farmers from submergence damage. A quick and efficient strategy was implemented to introgress
SUB1, a major QTL for submergence tolerance, into a rainfed lowland mega variety BR11 of Bangladesh by only two backcrosses and
one selfing generation. In marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC), one tightly-linked simple sequence repeat (SSR) and two gene-based
markers, four flanking SSR and 116 background SSR markers were used for foreground, recombinant and background selection,
respectively, in backcrosses between a SUB1 donor IR40931-33-1-3-2 and BR11. BR11-Sub1, identified in a BC2F2 plant, possessed BR11 type SSR alleles on all fragments analyzed except the SUB1 QTL. The introgression size in BR11-Sub1 was 800 Kb indicating approximately 99.8% identity to BR11. BR11-Sub1 along with
other introgression lines showed submergence tolerance similar to the tolerant parent. Yield, yield-component parameters and
grain physico-chemical properties showed successful recovery of the BR11 traits in BR11-Sub1, with yield potential ranging
from 5.2 to 5.6 t/ha, not significantly different from the recurrent parent mega variety BR11. Producing a large number (~1000)
of backcross F1 plants was considered essential to achieve recombination on both sides of the gene, limiting linkage drag with only two backcrosses.
A large number of background markers ensured proper recovery of the recurrent parent genome in the BC2F2 generation. The study demonstrates a rapid and highly precise strategy to introgress a major QTL by BC2F2 generation into a modern rice variety using an unadapted donor. The variety can replace BR11 on more than 2 million of ha

The efficient use of water by modern irrigation systems is becoming increasingly important in arid and semi-arid regions with limited water resources. This study was conducted for 2 years (2005 and 2006) to establish optimal irrigation rates and plant population densities for corn (Zea mays L.) in sandy soils using drip irrigation system. The study aimed at achieving high yield and efficient irrigation water use (IWUE) simultaneously. A field experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block split plot design with three drip irrigation rates (I1: 1.00, I2: 0.80, and I3: 0.60 of the estimated evapotranspiration), and three plant population densities (D1: 48,000, D2: 71,000 and D3: 95,000 plants ha−1) as the main plot and split plot, respectively. Irrigation water applied at I1, I2 and I3 were 5955, 4762 and 3572 m3 ha−1, respectively. A 3-day irrigation interval and three-way cross 310 hybrid corn were used. Results indicated that corn yield, yield components, and IWUE increased with increasing irrigation rates and decreasing plant population densities. Significant interaction effects between irrigation rate and plant population density were detected in both seasons for yield, selected yield components, and IWUE. The highest grain yield, yield components, and IWUE were found for I1D1, I1D2, or I2D1, while the lowest were found for I3D2 or I3D3. Thus, a high irrigation rate with low or medium plant population densities or a medium irrigation rate with a low plant population density are recommended for drip-irrigated corn in sandy soil. Crop production functions with respect to irrigation rates, determined for grain yield and different yield components, enable the results from this study to be extrapolated to similar agro-climatic conditions. 相似文献

Water production functions are used to model yield response to various levels of supplemental irrigation (SI), to assess water productivity coefficients, and to identify optimum irrigation under various input-output price scenarios. The SI production function is taken as the difference between the total water production function (irrigation + rain) and that of rainwater. Theoretical analysis of the unconstrained objective function shows that the seasonal depth of SI to maximize profit occurs when the marginal product of water equals the ratio of unit water cost to unit product sale price. Applying this analysis to wheat in northern Syria, the production functions of SI under different rainfall conditions are developed. Coupled with current and projected water costs and wheat sale prices, the functions are used to develop an easy-to-use chart for determining seasonal irrigation rates to maximize profit under a range of seasonal rainfall amounts.Results show that, for a given seasonal rainfall, there is a critical value for the ratio of irrigation cost to production price beyond which SI becomes less profitable than rainfed production. Higher product prices and lower irrigation costs encourage the use of more water. Policies supporting high wheat prices and low irrigation costs encourage maximizing yields but with low water productivity. The resulting farmer practice threatens the sustainability of water resources. Balancing profitability versus sustainability is a challenge for policy makers. Our analysis can help national and local water authorities and policy makers determine appropriate policies for water valuation and allocation; and assist extension services and farmers in planning irrigation infrastructure and farm water management. 相似文献

Deterioration of soil quality under resource-intensive modern agriculture in the face of global climate change poses a huge risk to food security. Because of the complex nature, estimators of soil quality often rely upon a limited set of soil attributes, along with statistical data reduction techniques, for developing quality indices, whilst overlooking biological aspects and regional climatic variability. This study screened the most suitable soil quality indexing approaches for a rice-oilseed-based cropping system in the lower Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP). For this, surface soil samples (0–15 cm) were collected from an ongoing long-term fertilizer experiment with a rice-mustard-sesame cropping system in the IGP. The following treatments were assessed for their effect on soil quality: T1-control, T2-NPK (recommended NPK doses), T3-NPKG (NPK + in situ green manuring), T4-NPKGB (NPK + in situ green manuring + biofertilizer) and T5-NPKF (NPK + farm yard manure FYM). We found that total organic carbon (TOC), β-glucosidase, CaCl2 extractable S, alkaline KMnO4 oxidizable N, activity of urease, amidase enzyme and mean weight diameter (MWD) were sensitive key indicators of soil quality. The NPKF treatment maintained the highest soil quality status (0.80–0.91), both under productivity and environmental protection goals, owing to the availability of decomposable carbon. Regression analysis showed a better agreement of equivalent rice yield with expert opinion (EO; R2 = 0.89) than principal component analysis (PCA; R2 = 0.76). Finally, we found that the expert opinion approach with the nonlinear scoring function was the best tool for soil quality assessment of the region. 相似文献

An ultrasonic method using two approaches, A and B, along with a reference Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 3050B [i.e., a mixture of 30 mL of nitric acid–hydrochloric acid–hydrogen peroxide–water (HNO3-HCl-H2O2-H2O)] were contrasted for leaching of a plant matrix. The trace metals were arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, mercury, manganese, nickel, lead, selenium, and zinc (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se and Zn) and quantified by ICP-OES followed by an investigation into residue formation and the impact of digestion time. Approach B was the most accurate and precise with percent recoveries ranging between 99 and 120%, whereas ultrasonic approach A and the USEPA method 3050B gave similar results with poor accuracies and precisions. In the optimization of the digestion time using approach B, the total metal recovery was fairly the same over a period of 120 min except for Cr and Cu, which showed slight variations. 相似文献

The study aims to track the dynamics of the olive leaf nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) for five olive varieties under drip irrigation in farmer's fields in central Morocco. Leaf sampling was done every month from May 2014 to April 2015. Leaf macronutrients contents showed variation over time. Olive leaves have maintained the same N content throughout the study period indicating a continuing olive uptake of nitrogen. Higher leaf P absorption was observed during flowering and fruit magnification periods indicating the important P needs of olive during these periods. Olive leaf K levels were higher from September to December indicating the high K needs of olive. No variety effect was revealed on the leaf N, P and K contents. Very highly significant differences were found between the leaf N and K levels measured at different sampling periods. The leaf P concentration was statistically equal in all measuring periods. 相似文献

Several sand culture and field experiments were conducted to screen out a number of Bangladeshi wheat varieties and advanced lines for boron (B) efficiency against Thai B efficient (‘Fang 60’) and inefficient (‘SW41’ and ‘E12’) varieties. Performances of wheat genotypes were evaluated with respect to flag leaf B concentration, pollen viability, grain set index, and grain yield. Wheat genotypes responded differently to boron deficiency. Pollen viability was found to be 67% in ‘Kanchan’, 35% in ‘Gourab’, 80% in ‘Sourav’, 90% in ‘Fang 60’, and 25% in ‘SW 41’ when B was not added. Pollen viability of all varieties was above 90% when B was applied. Based on grain set index and leaf B concentration, ‘Sourav’ was found to be the moderately B efficient variety. Thus, ‘Sourav’ can be regarded as a breeding material for development of new wheat varieties for tolerance to B deficiency. 相似文献

ABSTRACTVariations in the levels of the highly toxic oleandrin molecules were studied during composting of Nerium oleander L. waste mixed with clippings of the grass Pennisetum clandistenum L. The thermophilic phase is characterized by a rise in temperature, which reached 70°C. After 150 days of co-composting, the C/N ratio was 11, the pH was 8, the NO3?/NH4+ ratio was greater than 1 and overall decomposition reached 70%. During the successive stages of co-composting, oleandrin concentrations were monitored by HPLC. The relative abundance of oleadrin was 26.84% at T0 with 10% abatement during the first month and 90% after two months (stabilization phase), reaching 100%, i.e., total removal after 90 days of co-composting (maturation phase). The biodegradation of the toxic substance was largely attributed to the activity of actinomycetes and fungi. The germination index of lettuce and watercress seeds exceeded 50% after 90 days and reached 95% after 150 days, confirming that the final compost was mature, stable, and free from phytotoxicity in spite of the highly poisonous starting material. 相似文献
