Investigations on the significance of the nutritional status of plants for their salt tolerance In order to explain the causes of salt damages on crops in the Sibari Plain (Southern Italy) the nutrient contents of plants were used in addition to soil data. Increasing Na- and Mg-salinity reduced the K-contents of wheat plants during sprouting below the (preliminary) critical value of 30%o and the Ca-contents below the value of 3%o in spite of high gypsum contents and optimum K-supply of the soils (compared to soils with low salt contents). The content of nutrient elements can be improved by an increased nutrient supply up to the optimum range, and the content of detrimental elements in plants can be reduced below toxic limits. The specific toxicity of Mg-salts (believed to be especially high) could be prevented by optimum nutrition of the plants until general salt effects became dominant factors of damage. At optimum nutrient supply 6–7%o Mg in the tops of corn plants were toxic in greenhouse experiments. In the field even at high Mg-supply of the soils no more than 2,5%o Mg were found in cereals. At optimum K-supply more than 1–2%o Na in wheat plants reduced the yield. The salt tolerance of plants, therefore, can be increased by proper fertilisation. 相似文献

X-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray Raman scattering were used to probe the molecular arrangement in the first coordination shell of liquid water. The local structure is characterized by comparison with bulk and surface of ordinary hexagonal ice Ih and with calculated spectra. Most molecules in liquid water are in two hydrogen-bonded configurations with one strong donor and one strong acceptor hydrogen bond in contrast to the four hydrogen-bonded tetrahedral structure in ice. Upon heating from 25 degrees C to 90 degrees C, 5 to 10% of the molecules change from tetrahedral environments to two hydrogen-bonded configurations. Our findings are consistent with neutron and x-ray diffraction data, and combining the results sets a strong limit for possible local structure distributions in liquid water. The regulation of nerve growth factor (NGF) protein and NGF messenger RNA (mRNA) in the developing rat brain has been studied to assess the hypothesis that NGF supports the differentiation of cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain. In the adult, the major targets of these neurons, the hippocampus and neocortex, contain the highest concentrations of NGF mRNA, but comparatively low ratios of NGF protein to its mRNA. In contrast, a high concentration of NGF protein and a low concentration of NGF mRNA were seen in the basal forebrain, consistent with retrograde transport of NGF protein into this region from the neocortex and hippocampus. In these two target regions NGF and NGF mRNA were barely detectable at birth, their concentrations increased to a peak at day 21, and then NGF mRNA, but not NGF protein, declined threefold by day 35. NGF accumulation in the basal forebrain paralleled that in the target regions and preceded an increase in choline acetyltransferase, suggesting that the differentiation of cholinergic projection neurons is indeed regulated by retrogradely transported NGF. In addition, high ratios of NGF protein to NGF mRNA, comparable to that in the basal forebrain, were seen in the olfactory bulb and cerebellum, suggesting that NGF may be transported into these regions by unidentified neurons. 相似文献

It is shown by angle-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy that cavitands derived from resorcin[4]arenes provided with four dialkylsulfide chains form stable monolayers on gold surfaces that are well organized by self-assembly. The cavitand headgroups at the surface of the resorcin[4]arene monolayer act as molecular recognition sites for small organic molecules with remarkable selectivity for perchloroethylene (C(2)Cl(4)). Comparative thermal desorption experiments indicate binding sites with high interaction energies of C(2)Cl(4) at the surface of the resorcin[4]arene monolayers. Fast and reversible "host-guest" interactions were found by the monitoring of extremely small mass changes (in the nanogram range) with a quartz microbalance oscillator provided with gold electrodes coated by resorcin[4]arene monolayers. 相似文献
