In order to accurately predict the fate and behaviour of herbicides following application to hard surfaces, an understanding of the processes involved is required. Previous studies have demonstrated that herbicides with a low soil organic carbon partition coefficient (K(oc)) are preferentially removed from concrete and asphalt surfaces. It is possible, therefore, that sorption may play a role in retaining herbicides to hard surfaces. This study provides an indication of the extent to which herbicides may sorb to concrete and asphalt, and examines the results in the light of other research to identify the significance of sorption in describing herbicide losses after application. There was measurable sorption of herbicides to concrete and asphalt although this was limited compared with that to soils, especially for concrete. An exponential relationship between experimentally derived values of K(p) and literature values of K(oc) for asphalt was established (r(2) = 0.931); there was a weaker relationship for concrete (r(2) = 0.606). The experimentally derived K(p) values could be used to enhance the prediction of herbicide loss to receiving waters following application. It is probable that the fate of herbicides applied to concrete and asphalt surfaces depends more heavily on physical processes than is the case in soils. 相似文献

This prospective, multicentre, non-blinded, open study followed 46 cats with diabetes mellitus during treatment with porcine lente insulin (also known as porcine insulin zinc suspension, Caninsulin, Intervet) for 16+/-1 weeks (stabilization phase), with additional monitoring of some cats (n=23) for a variable period. At least three of the following were present at initial presentation: appropriate history of clinical signs consistent with diabetes mellitus, glucosuria, blood glucose greater than 15 mmol/l and fructosamine greater than 380 micromol/l. Insulin treatment was started at a dose rate of 0.25-0.5 IU/kg body weight twice daily, with a maximum starting dose of 2 IU/injection. Twenty-eight of the cats were classed as reaching clinical stability during the study, in 23 of these cats this was during the stabilization phase. Seven cats went into remission during the stabilization phase and one of the cats in week 56. Clinical signs of hypoglycaemia, significantly associated with a dose of 3 units or 0.5 IU/kg or more per cat (twice daily), were observed in nine of the 46 cats during the stabilization phase and concomitant biochemical hypoglycaemia was recorded in most cases. Biochemical hypoglycaemia, recorded in 6% of the blood glucose curves performed during the stabilization phase, was significantly associated with a dose rate of 0.75 IU/kg or more twice daily. This further highlights the need for cautious stepwise changes in insulin dose. The protocol used in the present study is suitable for and easy to use in practice. Disturbances such as grazing, invading species, and clear-cutting, often act at small spatial scales, and means for quantifying
their impact on fine scale vegetation patterns are generally lacking. Here we adopt a set of landscape metrics, commonly used
for quantifying coarse scale fragmentation, to quantify fine scale fragmentation, namely the fine scale vegetation structure.
At this scale, patches often consist of individual plants smaller than 1 m2, requiring the grain of the analysis to be much smaller. We used balloon aerial photographs to map fine details of Mediterranean
vegetation (pixel size <0.04 m) in experimental plots subjected to grazing and clear-cutting and in undisturbed plots. Landscape
metrics are sensitive to scale. Therefore, we aggregated the vegetation map into four coarser scales, up to a resolution of
1 m, and analyzed the effect of scale on the metrics and their ability to distinguish between different disturbances. At the
finest scale, six of the seven landscape metrics we evaluated revealed significant differences between treated and undisturbed
plots. Four metrics revealed differences between grazed and control plots, and six metrics revealed differences between cleared
and control plots. The majority of metrics exhibited scaling relations. Aggregation had mixed effects on the differences between
metric values for different disturbances. The control plots were the most sensitive to scale, followed by grazing and clearing.
We conclude that landscape metrics are useful for quantifying the very fine scale impact of disturbance on woody vegetation,
assuming that the analysis is based on sufficiently high spatial resolution data. 相似文献

Vasopressin and its binding protein, neurophysin, were measured by radioimmunoassay in the hypophyseal portal blood of monkeys after cannulation of individual long portal veins. Mean vasopressin concentrations (13,800 picograms per milliliter) in portal blood were more than 300 times as high as those in the systemic circulation (42 picograms per milliliter). Neurophysin concentration was approximately 25 times as high in portal as in systemic blood. By immunoperoxidase techniques, high concentrations of neurophysin were demonstrated around portal capillaries of the median eminence. These studies indicate direct secretion of vasopressin and neurophysin into the portal circulation; the quantities secreted during stress may be sufficient to exert significant effects on secretion of anterior pituitary hormone. 相似文献

Hyperthyroidism remains a common endocrine disorder of cats. Although relatively easy to diagnose in classically presenting cats, the increased frequency of testing cats with early or mild disease has had significant implications for the diagnostic performance of many of the routine tests currently used. Further advances in the etiopathogenesis and earlier diagnosis are only likely with the advent of a species specific feline thyroid-stimulating hormone assay. 相似文献
