OBJECTIVE: The present paper reports the prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity by gender, ethnicity and grade, among participants in a 2002 national survey among South African school-going youth that included height and weight measurements. DESIGN: A stratified two-stage sample was used. Nationally representative rates of underweight, overweight and obesity were calculated using weighted survey data and compared using chi2 analysis. SETTING: In all, 9224 grade 8 to grade 11 students, present at school in selected classes within selected South African government-funded schools in all nine provinces, participated in this study. Most of the students were between 13 and 19 years of age. RESULTS: Higher rates of underweight were observed for males than females as well as for black and 'coloured' than white students. Within each gender group, black and 'coloured' students had significantly higher rates of underweight than their white counterparts. Higher percentages of females than males were overweight and obese, overall and among black students. Furthermore, white male students had significantly higher rates of overweight than their black and 'coloured' counterparts. Among females, black and white students had significantly higher rates than 'coloured' students. Students in higher grades showed significantly lower rates of underweight and higher rates of overweight. DISCUSSION: These data confirm that South Africa, a developing nation in socio-economic transition, is experiencing both undernutrition and overnutrition. However, these problems are disproportionately distributed by gender, socio-economics and ethnicity. Continued surveillance of nutritional status may be one important component of a national strategy to prevent and control malnutrition. 相似文献

Summary Glume cultures of monogenic recessive mutants PGTSLS1 (Plant Genetics triticale selection large spike 1) and PGTSLG2 (Plant Genetics triticale selection long grain 2) were employed along with their parent PGTS control (Plant Genetics triticale selection control) and their F1 and F2 progenies, to determine the genetic basis of plant regeneration in hexaploid triticale. The mutant PGTSLS1 exhibited greater efficiency of plant regeneration (22.4%) followed by PGTS control (7.6%) and PGTSLG2 did not exhibit any regeneration. All the three F1's exhibited plant regeneration frequency on par with that of control (6.9–7.3%), suggesting dominant nature of control genotype over the isogenic mutants. The F2 results suggested that genetic control over the high frequency regeneration of PGTSLS1 was monogenic recessive in nature, and genetic control over the recalcitrant nature of PGTSLG2 also was monogenic recessive. The F2 of the cross PGTSLS1 × PGTSLG2 segregated into four classes. Of the 114 F2 plants, 19 showed no regeneration, 70 of them exhibited 6–8% regeneration, 20 of them 19–24% regeneration, and 5 of them exhibited highest frequency regeneration (57–60%). These observations suggest dihybrid segregation for regeneration. The highest frequency of plant regeneration (57–60%) exhibited by 5 F2 plants may be due to the interaction of non-allelic genes in recessive condition. Microsatellites or Simple Sequence Repeats(SSRs) are informative molecular genetic markers in many crop species. SSRs are
PCR-based, highly polymorphic, abundant, widely distributed throughout the genome and inherited in a co-dominant manner in
most cases. Here we describe the presence of SSRs in cDNAs of cotton. Thirty one SSR primer pairs of 220 (∼14%) tested led
to PCR amplification of discrete fragments using cotton leaf cDNA as template. Sequence analysis showed 25% of 24randomly
selected cDNA clones amplified with different SSR primer pairs contained repeat motifs. We further showed that sequences from
the SSR-containing cDNAs were conserved across G. barbadense and G. hirsutum, revealing the importance of the SSR markers for comparative mapping of transcribed genes. Data mining for plant SSR-ESTs
from the publicly available databases identified SSRs motifs in many plant species,including cotton, in a range of 1.1 to4.8%
of the submitted ESTs for a given species.

Genetic control of flowering time in sorghum was investigated using a recombinant inbred lines population derived from a cross
between IS 2807, a slightly photoperiod sensitive tropical caudatum landrace, and IS 7680,a highly photoperiod sensitive tropical
guinea landrace. Progenies were sown with their parents at six different dates between 1995 and 1997 in Burkina Faso. Direct
field measures and synthetic measures derived from the implementation of a model were used to characterize the photoperiod
response. Emphasis was put to identify the most relevant traits to account for Basic Vegetative Phase (BVP) and photoperiod
sensitivity sensus stricto. One QTL was detected on Linkage Group (LG) F for the traits related to BVP. Two QTLs were detected on LGs C and H for the
traits related to the photoperiod sensitivity sensus stricto. This gives credit to at least partially independent genetic determinisms for those two components of photoperiod response.
Evidences for possible orthology of the QTLs detected here with other QTLs and major genes involved in flowering time of sorghum
and rice are discussed.

Pearl millet occupies an important place in attaining nutritional security in marginal areas; however, as it develops off-flavours, it is less preferred by food industry. The objective of the current study was to determine the variations in rancidity-related traits and estimate the combining ability of inbreds and hybrids for these traits under varied environmental conditions. In this study, 32 hybrids were developed from eight lines and four testers using line × tester mating design and evaluated along with parents and checks 86M86 and HHB 67 for yield and rancidity-associated traits in three environments. The hybrids L7T2 and L6T1 are identified as promising hybrids for grain yield and rancidity. Higher variance due to specific combining ability and predictability ratio for grain yield and rancidity-associated characters indicate the predominance of non-additive gene action. The tester T1 recorded a significant negative GCA effect with low alcoholic acidity. A significant and positive SCA for grain yield was observed in L3T1 and L7T2, whereas for rancidity in L5T4. Alcoholic acidity showed a significant positive association with 1000 seed weight, lipase and lipoxygenase in parents and negative association with 1000 seed weight in hybrids. 相似文献

The mutant has no shoot hairs in contrast to the dense hairs on normal chickpeas. The character is governed by a single recessive gene. An efficient, in vitro clonal propagation protocol has been established for Gardenia latifolia Ait. using mature nodal explants on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium fortified with cytokinins (BA/Kn/2-iP) (1.0–5.0 mg l?1) in combination with auxin IAA (0.5 mg l?1). Maximum bud break (87 %) with shoot number (7.2 ± 0.26) observed on MS medium supplemented with BA (4.0 mg l?1) and IAA (0.5 mg l?1). Maximum number of shoots (30 ± 0.46) with shoot length of (0.9 ± 0.03 cm) observed on MS medium supplemented with BA (2.0 mg l?1), Kn (2.0 mg l?1) and IAA (0.5 mg l?1). Further elongation of shoots (3.5 ± 0.06 cm) was achieved on MS medium supplemented with BA (1.0 mg l?1) and IAA (0.1 mg l?1). About 70 % of root induction occurred in half-strength MS medium supplemented with IBA (4.0 mg l?1) in 4–6 weeks. Further elongation of roots with average length (9.0 cm) was achieved in culture bottles containing vermiculite and ¼ strength MS salts. After their partial hardening in these bottles for 30 days they were transferred to pots containing a mixture of soil and vermicompost (1:1) for acclimatization. of eight foliar traits of juvenile plants of five different species of Jasminum grown under coconut shade. The results reveal the shade tolerant J. pubescence to produce more number of nodes and longer shoots in all the three seasons studied. J. grandiflorum produced longer leaves and internodal distance than other species tested. Winter season shoots were longer with more number
of nodes and longer internodal distances than rainy season. Results are discussed in relation to the adaptive behavior of

Surveys were made at the end of the 1990 and 1991 growing seasons for root-inhabiting fungi in the genera Fusarium, Cylindrocarpon and Pythium from the roots of one year-old container-grown Douglas-fir and spruce seedlings grown under greenhouse conditions. In the 1990 survey of four nurseries, it was found that 61–97% of both Douglas-fir and spruce roots were colonized with Fusarium, Cylindrocarpon or Pythium. There were significantly (p0.05) more Douglas-fir roots than spruce roots colonized by Fusarium at all nurseries, however, there were significantly (p0.05) more spruce roots than Douglas-fir roots colonized by Cylindrocarpon and Pythium. Root colonization of Douglas-fir and spruce by the three fungal genera during 1991 varied from 0–82% at three nurseries, however, only at a south coastal nursery was there significantly (p0.05) more spruce than Douglas-fir roots colonized by Cylindrocarpon. Significantly more seedlings were infected in 1990 than in 1991. In 1991, there were few significant differences between Douglas-fir and spruce, in the percentage of seedlings with colonized roots and in the percentage of growth medium colonized by the fungi.
