A complete diallel cross was made among nine Betula pendula trees growing in a natural population and a trial was planted on agricultural soil at one site. This exceptional trial has provided estimates of genetic parameters that can only be estimated in complete diallels. Traits measured were height and diameter during a period of 37 years, and assessments were made of bud burst, leaf abscission and rust infection at the early ages. All traits showed genetic variation and the variance components of general combining ability (GCA) effects were dominating, with heritability estimates of 0.16 and 0.23 for height and diameter at age six years. The best-growing families could be identified at that age. At age 37 years, when the trial had been thinned twice, the offspring from the highest and lowest ranked parent for growth contributed with 19% and 6% of the total volume of the stand, respectively. The GCA effects were also highly significant for the assessment traits, but with an interaction with year for bud burst. High values of estimates of genetic correlations proved that bud burst, leaf abscission and rust infection are interrelated, and also to some extent with growth traits. Families with an early bud burst were tallest, were less affected by the rust fungus and kept their leaves later in the autumn.  相似文献

Copper absorption, liver accumulation and development of copper toxicosis in sheep are influenced by a variety of other elements, in particular molybdenum, sulphur and zinc (Underwood 1977). In a previous study on liver concentrations of copper, molybdenum and zinc in normal and copper-poisoned sheep, no direct correlation was found between the concentrations of the three metals, but molybdenum was significantly lower in the livers from sheep dead from chronic copper poisoning than in normal animals (Frøslie & Norheim 1976).  相似文献

  • ? Each annual ring in pines consists of earlywood and latewood with considerable difference in density and width. To get a better determination of the genetic regulation of total wood density in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), density and width of those ring sections were measured in annual ring numbers 12 to 21 of Scots pines in a full-sib progeny test. Tree height and stem diameter were also measured.
  • ? Heritabilities for the annual ring sections increased with age for earlywood density from 0.08 to approximately 0.25; latewood density showed similar reductions. Heritability over all 10 annual rings was 0.25 for earlywood density, 0.22 for latewood density, 0.29 for height and 0.10 for stem diameter. Genetic correlations between earlywood and latewood density and growth traits were negative, while they were strongly positive between densities of adjacent annual rings (0.70–1.0).

Despite the higher heritability of earlywood density, the strong positive genetic correlation between those traits indicates little benefit from focusing solely on earlywood density when selecting for wood density. Analysing earlywood and latewood separately does not benefit from including the width of the corresponding ring section as a covariate. Juvenile wood may possibly turn into mature wood 15–20 y from the pith.

    Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) were fed purified diets containing fish oil for six weeks and then soybean lecithin or soybean oil for 25 days. The gastrointestinal tract segments, stomach, midgut and hindgut were then sampled for lipid and fatty acid composition and electron microscopy. Membrane lipid class composition was fairly similar in all three segments of trout fed fish oil. Hindgut contained slightly more phosphatidylserine than stomach and midgut, while midgut contained more phosphatidylcholine and less lysophospatidylcholine/sphingomyelin. Feeding soybean products appeared to marginally decrease free cholesterol. The fatty acid compositions of the main lipid classes showed significant regional differences. In control fish, stomach had higher levels of arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids than midgut and hindgut, and lower content of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Midgut phosphatidylethanolamine also had higher levels of saturated fatty acids and less n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids than the other tissues. Feeding soybean products decreased the n-3/n-6 ratio mainly due to increases in linoleic (18:2n-6) and 20:4n-6 and decreases in 22:6n-3 and eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3). Phosphatidylcholine and to a lesser extent phosphatidylethanolamine adapted more readily to dietary changes by major increases in 18:2n-6 and C20−22 n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The composition of phosphatidyl-serine and -inositol appeared to be under more strict metabolic control. Linoleic acid hardly increased at all while the increase in other n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids was less pronounced than for the other lipid classes. Regardless of lipid class, stomach resisted dietary changes more strongly than midgut and hindgut. Increases in n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids were minor as were the loss of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The dead-end product 20:2n-6 accumulated to a higher degree in hindgut phosphatidyl-ethanolamine and -coline compared to midgut and stomach, suggesting that the activity of Δ6 desaturation is higher in the anterior part of the intestine where most of the lipid is absorbed. Feeding soybean oil caused massive accumulation of free lipid droplets in midgut enterocytes while little lipid droplets were observed in trout fed fish oil or soybean lecithin. Since both soybean products influenced intestinal composition to the same degree, altered fatty acid profiles in membranes is not responsible for the observed lipid accumulation. This supports previous observations in Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus L.), suggesting that fish may require exogenous phospholipids in order to sustain a sufficient rate of lipoprotein synthesis.     Due to its importance for human and animal health, low bioavailability of selenium (Se) is of concern in large parts of the world. Among the factors determining Se availability is competition for binding sites by other anions. In order to evaluate the effect of different soil P status on Se availability from fertilizer, adsorption studies were conducted with soils ranging from low to very high available P as measured in ammonium lactate (P‐AL) and addition of Se as either selenate or selenite. Generally selenite, and to some extent also selenate, adsorption decreased with increasing P‐AL status of the soil. However, in a silt loam, the increase in P‐AL from 140 (high) to 210 mg P kg–1 (very high) did not result in a corresponding decrease in Se adsorption. Phosphorus saturation, on the other hand, was found to be lower in the sample that was very high in available P, suggesting that both the total amount of P on binding sites and the amount of plant‐available P influence Se availability. Selenate addition caused an increase in P availability, especially when added together with phosphate to a silt loam with very high P‐AL status.  相似文献

    Arctic climate change is expected to lead to a greater frequency of extreme winter warming events. During these events, temperatures rapidly increase to well above 0 °C for a number of days, which can lead to snow melt at the landscape scale, loss of insulating snow cover and warming of soils. However, upon return of cold ambient temperatures, soils can freeze deeper and may experience more freeze-thaw cycles due to the absence of a buffering snow layer. Such loss of snow cover and changes in soil temperatures may be critical for litter decomposition since a stable soil microclimate during winter (facilitated by snow cover) allows activity of soil organisms. Indeed, a substantial part of fresh litter decomposition may occur in winter. However, the impacts of extreme winter warming events on soil processes such as decomposition have never before been investigated. With this study we quantify the impacts of winter warming events on fresh litter decomposition using field simulations and lab studies.Winter warming events were simulated in sub-Arctic heathland using infrared heating lamps and soil warming cables during March (typically the period of maximum snow depth) in three consecutive years of 2007, 2008, and 2009. During the winters of 2008 and 2009, simulations were also run in January (typically a period of shallow snow cover) on separate plots. The lab study included soil cores with and without fresh litter subjected to winter-warming simulations in climate chambers.Litter decomposition of common plant species was unaffected by winter warming events simulated either in the lab (litter of Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii), or field (litter of Vaccinium vitis-idaea, and B. pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) with the exception of Vaccinium myrtillus (a common deciduous dwarf shrub) that showed less mass loss in response to winter warming events. Soil CO2 efflux measured in the lab study was (as expected) highly responsive to winter warming events but surprisingly fresh litter decomposition was not. Most fresh litter mass loss in the lab occurred during the first 3-4 weeks (simulating the period after litter fall).In contrast to past understanding, this suggests that winter decomposition of fresh litter is almost non-existent and observations of substantial mass loss across the cold season seen here and in other studies may result from leaching in autumn, prior to the onset of “true” winter. Further, our findings surprisingly suggest that extreme winter warming events do not affect fresh litter decomposition.  相似文献

    Fifteen clinically healthy calves were sampled every week during the first 5 weeks of life and thereafter every month until the age of 6 months. The percentages and absolute values of CD4+, CD8+ gammadelta TCR+ and WC1+ T cells, CD21+ B cells and NKp46+ NK cells were determined by flow cytometry, and the expression of the interleukin-2 receptor alpha chain (CD25) was measured to assess the level of activation of the lymphocyte subpopulations. Neutrophil phagocytosis, respiratory burst and bactericidal activity were measured in five different neutrophil function assays. Most of the parameters examined reached a stable level during the first 6 months of life. The proportions of CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes remained relatively stable during the study period, while there was a moderate decrease in the relative percentage of gammadelta T cells from birth to approximately 5 months of age. However, the absolute numbers of gammadelta T cells per millilitre of blood remained stable throughout the study period and did not display significant variation with age. The percentage of cells expressing the B-cell maturation marker CD21 increased significantly over the first 5 months of life. The proportion of NK cells showed substantial variation during the study. Marked differences in the relative proportions of the lymphocyte subpopulations were noted between the individual calves, and the individual ranking of the animals was largely maintained over time. CD25 expression was detected on a mean of 6.6% of the CD4+ cells, while a lower percentage of the other lymphocyte subpopulations expressed this receptor. Phagocytic activity was demonstrated in approximately 90% of the neutrophils, and this proportion remained stable during the entire study period, while respiratory burst activity showed a moderate decrease during the first 2 months of life. The present study shows that the T-cell subpopulations are present in peripheral blood of calves at levels comparable with adult values, while the B-cell population increases significantly with age. The decrease in the relative percentage of gammadelta T cells appears to be attributable to an increase in the absolute numbers of CD4+ and CD21+ cells, rather than a change in absolute gammadelta T-cell numbers. Furthermore, the results indicate that the neutrophilic granulocytes are functional and able to mount an effective response in young calves from the first week of life.  相似文献

    Agricultural soils contribute significantly to atmospheric nitrous oxide (N2O). A considerable part of the annual N2O emission may occur during the cold season, possibly supported by high product ratios in denitrification (N2O/(N2+N2O)) and nitrification (N2O-N/(NO3-N+NO2-N)) at low temperatures and/or in response to freeze-thaw perturbation. Water-soluble organic materials released from frost-sensitive catch crops and green manure may further increase winter emissions. We conducted short-term laboratory incubations under standardized moisture and oxygen (O2) conditions, using nitrogen (N) tracers (15N) to determine process rates and sources of emitted N2O after freeze-thaw treatment of soil or after addition of freeze-thaw extract from clover. Soil respiration and N2O production was stimulated by freeze-thaw or addition of plant extract. The N2O emission response was inversely related to O2 concentration, indicating denitrification as the quantitatively prevailing process. Denitrification product ratios in the two studied soils (pH 4.5 and 7.0) remained largely unaltered by freeze-thaw or freeze-thaw-released plant material, refuting the hypothesis that high winter emissions are due to frost damage of N2O reductase activity. Nitrification rates estimated by nitrate (NO3) pool enrichment were 1.5-1.8 μg NO3-N g−1 dw soil d−1 in freeze-thaw-treated soil when incubated at O2 concentrations above 2.3 vol% and one order of magnitude lower at 0.8 vol% O2. Thus, the experiments captured a situation with severely O2-limited nitrification. As expected, the O2 stress at 0.8 vol% resulted in a high nitrification product ratio (0.3 g g−1). Despite this high product ratio, only 4.4% of the measured N2O accumulation originated from nitrification, reaffirming that denitrification was the main N2O source at the various tested O2 concentrations in freeze-thaw-affected soil. N2O emission response to both freeze-thaw and plant extract addition appeared strongly linked to stimulation of carbon (C) respiration, suggesting that freeze-thaw-induced release of decomposable organic C was the major driving force for N2O emissions in our soils, both by fuelling denitrifiers and by depleting O2. The soluble C (applied as plant extract) necessary to induce a CO2 and N2O production rate comparable with that of freeze-thaw was 20-30 μg C g−1 soil dw. This is in the range of estimates for over-winter soluble C loss from catch crops and green manure plots reported in the literature. Thus, freeze-thaw-released organic C from plants may play a significant role in freeze-thaw-related N2O emissions.  相似文献

    Larval Atlantic halibut fed Artemia has previously been shown to contain lower levels of Vitamin A compared to larvae fed zooplankton. The two types of live prey contain small or no amounts of vitamin A, but high levels of carotenoids that can be converted to vitamin A in other fish species. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of Atlantic halibut juveniles to convert β-carotene, astaxanthin and canthaxanthin to vitamin A. Three levels of each carotenoid and retinyl acetate were fed to Atlantic halibut juveniles for 60 days. A vitamin A and carotenoid deficient diet was fed in triplicate as control. A HPLC method modified from Nöll (1996) and validated for fish matrix was used to quantify both all-trans-retinol and 3,4-didehydro retinol. By comparing regression coefficients we observed that the increasing levels of carotenoids in the diets were reflected in increasing levels of vitamin A in both whole fish and liver samples. All carotenoids were converted to vitamin A, but to different degrees. Retinyl acetate and β-carotene resulted in whole fish vitamin A levels significantly higher than canthaxanthin and astaxanthin. 3,4-didehydro retinol was not detected when the overall level of all-trans-retinol was low. When 3,4-didehydro retinol appeared, it was always in lower levels than all-trans-retinol.  相似文献
