A feeding study was conducted in the winter 2001 to determine the effects of feeding rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) enriched with various levels of essential fatty acids on the growth and survival of haddock larvae (Melanogrammus aeglefinus). Rotifer enrichment treatments were: 1) mixed algae, 2) high DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, 22:6n-3), 3) high DHA and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid, 20:5n-3), and 4) DHA, EPA, and AA (arachidonic acid, 20:4n-6). Larvae were fed rotifers enriched with the different treatments from days 1 to 16 post-hatch. From day 17 until 25 all treatment groups were fed rotifers reared on mixed algae and then weaned onto the International Council for Exploration of the SEA (ICES) Standard Reference Weaning diet (http://allserv.rug.ac.t/aquaculture/rend/rend.htm) over a five day period. The experiment was terminated on day 41 post-hatch. The enrichment treatments affected the fatty acid composition of the rotifers and correlated with the accumulation of these fatty acids in the haddock larvae. However, no significant differences in larval growth or survival to 40 days post hatch were detected, suggesting that all treatments provided the minimal essential fatty acid requirements for haddock. 相似文献

Mal secco disease of citrus caused by Phoma tracheiphila is a devastating disease in the Mediterranean basin. Susceptible citrus species include lemon, citron, lime and others. Trees
attacked by the fungus show characteristic symptoms; the smallest twigs die first, followed by the larger branches. Eventually,
the whole tree is killed. The symptoms are clear in the orchards but by the time they are visible the disease is already well
established. The need for a sensitive, reliable and rapid diagnostic method for the early identification of the fungus in
trees and fruit exists. We have developed a PCR-based method for the identification of P. tracheiphila from plant tissues including fruit. Any such method must take into account the genetic variability in the pathogen population.
Molecular methods were used to compare different isolates of P. tracheiphila. This study found no significant differences between different isolates from different citrus species from different parts

Anaerobic microbial degradation of selected 3,4-dihalogenated aromatic compounds was studied in medium inoculated with pond sediment. Sediment samples were collected from a diuron-treated pond. Diuron was dehalogenated at the para position, forming CPDMU as the sole degradation product. DCPU was similarly dehalogenated at the para position, forming MCPU as the only degradation product. Linuron degradation resulted in four products: one, CPMMU, was the result of biological dehalogenation at the para position; another, DCPMU, was the result of chemical degradation; and the other two products were unidentified. Chlorbromuron degradation formed three unidentified products. Stam, an acylanilide, was degraded, forming two products, one of which was possibly 3-chloropropioanilide. CIPC and an unidentified compound were formed from DCIP. No degradation of parent compounds or appearance of degradation products were detected in mixtures of each test compound and sterile sediment except linuron. 相似文献

The factors responsible for widespread declines of grassland birds in the United States are not well understood. This study,
conducted in the short-grass prairie of eastern Wyoming, was designed to investigate the relationship between variation in
habitat amount, landscape heterogeneity, prey resources, and spatial variation in grassland bird species richness. We estimated
bird richness over a 5-year period (1994–1998) from 29 Breeding Bird Survey locations. Estimated bird richness was modeled
as a function of landscape structure surrounding survey routes using satellite-based imagery (1996) and grasshopper density
and richness, a potentially important prey of grassland birds. Model specification progressed from simple to complex explanations
for spatial variation in bird richness. An information-theoretic approach was used to rank and select candidate models. Our
best model included measurements of habitat amount, habitat arrangement, landscape matrix, and prey diversity. Grassland bird
richness was positively associated with grassland habitat; was negatively associated with habitat dispersion; positively associated
with edge habitats; negatively associated with landscape matrix attributes that may restrict movement of grassland bird; and
positively related to grasshopper richness. Collectively, 62% of the spatial variation in grassland bird richness was accounted
for by the model (adj-R2 = 0.514). These results suggest that the distribution of grassland bird species is influenced by a complex mixture of factors
that include habitat area affects, landscape pattern and composition, and the availability of prey. 相似文献

Free water is considered important to wildlife in arid regions. In the western United States, thousands of water developments
have been built to benefit wildlife in arid landscapes. Agencies and researchers have yet to clearly demonstrate their effectiveness.
We combined a spatial analysis of summer chukar (Alectoris chukar) covey locations with dietary composition analysis in western Utah. Our specific objectives were to determine if chukars
showed a spatial pattern that suggested association with free water in four study areas and to document summer dietary moisture
content in relation to average distance from water. The observed data for the Cedar Mountains study area fell within the middle
of the random mean distance to water distribution suggesting no association with free water. The observed mean distance to
water for the other three areas was much closer than expected compared to a random spatial process, suggesting the importance
of free water to these populations. Dietary moisture content of chukar food items from the Cedar Mountains (59%) was significantly
greater (P < 0.05) than that of birds from Box Elder (44%) and Keg-Dugway (44%). Water developments on the Cedar Mountains are likely
ineffective for chukars. Spatial patterns on the other areas, however, suggest association with free water and our results
demonstrate the need for site-specific considerations. Researchers should be aware of the potential to satisfy water demand
with pre-formed and metabolic water for a variety of species in studies that address the effects of wildlife water developments.
We encourage incorporation of spatial structure in model error components in future ecological research. 相似文献

There is debate among ecologists about whether total habitat area or patch arrangement contributes most to population and/or
community responses to fragmented or patchy landscapes. We tested the relative effects of patch area and isolation for predicting
bird occurrence in a naturally patchy landscape in the Bear River Mountains of Northern Utah, USA. We selected focal patches
(mountain meadows) ranging in elevation from 1,920 to 2,860 m and in size from 0.6 to 182 ha. Breeding birds were sampled
in each focal meadow during the summers of 2003 and 2004 using variable-distance point transects. Logistic regression and
likelihood-based model selection were used to determine the relationship between likelihood of occurrence of three bird species
(Brewer’s sparrow, vesper sparrow, and white-crowned sparrow) and area, isolation, and proximity metrics. We used model weights
and model-averaged confidence intervals to assess the importance of each predictor variable. Plots of area versus isolation
were used to evaluate complex relationships between the variables. We found that meadow area was the most important variable
for explaining occurrence for two species, and that isolation was the most important for the other. We also found that the
absolute distance was more appropriate for evaluating isolation responses than was the species-specific proximity metric.
Our findings add clarity to the debate between ecologists regarding the relative importance of area and isolation in species
responses to patchy landscapes. 相似文献

A case of epibulbar melanoma in a 6-month-old, gelded, chestnut Hanoverian foal is reported. The location and clinical appearance upon initial presentation led to the tentative diagnosis of staphyloma or a congenital mass of unknown origin. An attempt was made to surgically excise the mass under general anesthesia, but due to its infiltrative nature and intraoperative appearance, most, but not all was removed without compromising the integrity of the globe. Histopathological evaluation revealed a multinodular to packeted, poorly demarcated, unencapsulated, infiltrative exophytic melanocytic neoplasm composed of bundles and nests of plump spindloid to polygonal heavily pigmented epithelioid neoplastic cells interspersed with pigment-laden macrophages within a fine fibrovascular stroma. Upon examination after enucleation, neoplastic cells were found to infiltrate into the lateral cornea, sclera and the choroid. This is a unique case of an epibulbar melanoma with choroidal invasion in a foal. Based on the sudden onset and rapid growth as well as the histological evidence of invasion, well-differentiated features, heavy pigmentation, and no apparent mitoses, this neoplasm was considered to be a low-grade malignant melanoma. At 14 months after excision there is no evidence of recurrence. 相似文献
