We report the effects of shifting cultivation on water quality in 16 creeks investigated once in 2007 and twice in 2008 in 16 apparently similar small neighboring watersheds,each of 3 to 5 ha,at four locations around Barkal sub-district under Rangamati District of Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh.Concentrations of SO 4 2and K +,and pH in creek water were lower,and NO 3-N and Na + concentrations were higher in shifting-cultivation land compared to land with either plantation or natural forest or a combination of these cover types.Shifting cultivation effects on some water quality parameters were not significant due to change in land cover of the watershed between two sampling periods either through introduction of planted tree species or naturally regenerated vegetation.Conductivity and concentrations of HCO 3,PO 4 3,Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ in creek water showed no definite trend between shifting cultivation and the other land cover types.At one area near the Forest Range Office of Barkal,creek water pH was 5.8 under land cover with a combination of shifting cultivation and plantation.At this area Na + concentration in shifting-cultivation land ranged from 32.33 to 33.00 mg L-1 and in vegetated area from 25.00 to 30.50 mg L-1 in 2007.At another area,Chaliatali Chara,SO 4 2concentration in a shifting-cultivation watershed ranged from 4.46 to 10.51 mg L-1,lower than in a vegetated watershed that ranged from 11.69 to 19.98 mg L-1 in 2007.SO 4 2concentration in this shifting-cultivation area ranged from 1.28 to 1.37 mg L-1 and in the vegetated area from 1.37 to 3.50 mg L-1 in 2008. 相似文献

The introgression of wild chromosomal segments into popular rice varieties is one of the potential approaches for developing varieties for drought stress condition. Sixteen genotypes, including nine indica, two tropical japonica and five chromosome segments substitution lines(CSSLs) with different levels of tolerance/susceptibility to drought stress, were selected for diversity study. Sixty-three microsatellite markers were utilized for assessing genetic diversity. A total of 95 alleles were amplified, and out of them, 60 were polymorphic. Six unique alleles, amplified by the microsatellite loci RM276, RM472,RM488, RM537, RM541 and RM28089, were identified in six genotypes, namely FR13A, Brahamanakhi,RUF44, Swarna-sub1, Brahamanakhi and Satyabhama. The highest genetic similarity was found among CSSLs. Polymorphism information content(PIC) value varied from 0 to 1.00 with an average of 0.66 per locus. Twenty-eight microsatellites were found to be polymorphic, which could be used in marker-assisted selection programme. All the sixteen genotypes were grouped into two major clusters at genetic similarity of 0.64. In the cluster I, five CSSLs identified as diverse genotypes had wild ancestor segments responsible for drought tolerance, and hence they could be utilized as potential donors. The popular Indian varieties, Swarna-sub1 and IR64-sub1, could be used as recurrent parents in the future breeding program for developing varieties for abiotic stresses such as submergence and drought. 相似文献

Intraspecific phenotypic diversity is the raw material for evolution, so understanding its origin and maintenance is critically important for conservation of biodiversity. Intraspecific diversity in a trait or a suite of traits can result from genetic diversity and/or phenotypic plasticity. The two are, however, not independent as plasticity has been shown to evolve. In this study, we evaluated the importance of phenotypic plasticity in generating morphological diversity in populations of small benthic Arctic charr in Iceland, using a rearing experiment with contrasting modes of feeding. We also examined the association between phenotypic plasticity in offspring groups generated by the contrasting feeding modes and important ecological variables characterising the natural habitats of the respective populations. Although the level of plasticity could not be related to any of the ecological measurements, clear differences in morphological reaction norms among populations suggest that plasticity is an important aspect of morphological diversity of the charr. It is not clear whether that plasticity is adaptive, but it is notable that reaction norms in all populations have similar reaction to the treatments. 相似文献

Haemonchus contortus is one of the most pathogenic parasites of small ruminants (e.g., sheep and goat). The treatment of haemonchosis is complicated because of frequent resistance of H. contortus to common anthelmintics. The development of resistance can be facilitated by the action of drug metabolizing enzymes of parasites that can deactivate anthelmintics and thus protect parasites against the toxic effect of the drug. The aim of this project was to investigate the Phase I biotransformation of benzimidazole anthelmintic flubendazole in H. contortus and to determine the biotransformation of other model xenobiotics. For this purpose, in vitro (subcellular fractions of H. contortus homogenate) as well as ex vivo (live nematodes cultivated in flasks with medium) experiments were used. The results showed that cytosolic NADPH-dependent enzymes of H. contortus metabolize flubendazole via reduction of its carbonyl group. The apparent kinetic parameters of this reaction were determined (V'max=39.8+/-2.1 nM min(-1), K'm=1.5+/-0.3 microM). The reduction of flubendazole in H. contortus is stereospecific, the ratio of (-):(+) enantiomers of reduced flubendazole formed was 90:10. Reduced flubendazole was the only Phase I metabolite found. Effective reduction of other xenobiotics with carbonyl group (metyrapon, daunorubicin, and oracin) was also found. Significant activity of carbonyl-reducing enzymes may be important for H. contortus to survive the attacks of anthelmintics or other xenobiotics with carbonyl group. 相似文献

The inheritance and expression of the reporter gene uidA, encoding β-glucuronidase (GUS), was previously analysed in the T1 generation of 25 independent transformed lines of Lotus corniculatus cv. Leo. In the work reported here, GUS activity in various tissues of seven of these lines was tested in the T2 generation. Four representative lines were chosen for more detailed study in the T3 generation. Lines 25 and 38 had multiple, independently segregating transgene inserts; lines 24 and 39 appeared to transmit one segregating transgene insert to their T1 progeny, although transgene expression was low and was detected in fewer seedlings than expected in line 39. The uidA gene was inherited and expressed in seedlings of T1, T2 and T3 generations of all four lines. In all lines, transgene expression varied between tissues, with more embryos than seedlings
having detectable GUS activity. Studies in the T2 generation showed that use of transgenic plants as female or male parents altered the frequency of expression of the transgene
in progeny. By contrast, in the T3 generation the use of transgenic plants as female or male parents did not effect either frequency of transmission, or expression
of the transgene, in any of the four lines. Transgene inheritance was also similar among individual pods within flower heads
and between individual flower heads.

The effects of Leucaena leucocephala and L. pallida prunings and cattle manure on maize nutrient uptake and yield were investigated in a hedgerow intercropping trial in the
Ethiopian highlands. Hedgerow intercropping (also called alley cropping) is an agroforestry system in which trees are grown
in dense hedges between alleys where short-cycle crops are grown. The hedges are pruned periodically during the cropping period
and the prunings are added to the soil as green manure. For each leucaena species, the experiment had 16 treatments resulting
from a factorial combination of four levels of leucaena leaf prunings (no prunings applied; first prunings applied; first
and second prunings applied; first, second and third prunings applied), two levels of air-dried cattle manure (0 and 3 t dry
matter ha–1) and two levels of N fertilizer (0 and 40 kg N ha–1 as urea). Uptake of N, P and K increased significantly with application of the three nutrient sources, but uptake of Ca and
Mg either did not respond or decreased with application of prunings and manure. All the three factors increased maize grain
and stover yields significantly, usually with no significant interactions between the factors. At least two applications of
prunings were required to significantly increase nutrient uptake and maize yield. Maize in the row closest to the hedge did
not respond to these nutrient inputs. It is concluded that hedgerow intercropping, with or without manure application, can
increase crop yields moderately (to 2–3 t ha–1 maize grain yields) in the highlands, but P, Ca and Mg may have to be supplied from external sources if they are deficient
in the soil. Additional N is still required for higher yields (>4 t ha–1 maize grain yields). However, quantification of the competition effects of the trees is also required to confirm these results.

Physical properties of ground materials from roller mills are affected by the characteristics of wheat and the operational parameters of the roller mill. Backpropagation neural networks were designed, trained, and tested for the prediction of three physical properties of ground wheat: geometric mean diameter (GMD), specific surface area increase (SSAI), and break release (BR). Eight independent variables were used as input data. Compared to conventional statistical models, the accuracy of prediction was improved substantially, as reflected by the significant reduction in root mean squared error (RMS), relative error (RE), and the increase in coefficient of determination R2 (>0.98). The neural network models are, therefore, capable of predicting the physical properties of the ground wheat. 相似文献

This study describes growth variation within groups of salmonids and the relation to initial fish weights and feeding levels.
PIT-tagged rainbow trout (RT) and brook trout (BT) of start weight 120–170 g were reared in separate tanks for 9 weeks. Both
species were fed each day either a high ration close to satiation (H) or half of this ration (L). Four experimental groups
(RT-H, RT-L, BT-H, BT-L) were studied with regard to their propensity to increase weight in accord with their initial weight.
The slope of the regression line between initial weights (g) and weight increases for individuals in each tank in each period
was applied as indicator for this propensity (termed “slope”). All calculated slopes in the experiment were positive which
indicates the general ability of weighty fish to gain more weight than smaller individuals. The average slope during all 9 weeks
was 2–4 times higher for RT-L (5.91) than for all other groups (RT-H: 1.50, P < 0.01; BT-H: 1.76, P < 0.01 and BT-L: 2.88, P < 0.05), indicating the particular propensity of large RT to gain weight when feed was restricted. Overall, ration level
had large impact on slopes (H: 1.63, L: 4.39, P < 0.01), while this was not the case for species (RT: 3.71, BT: 2.32, P > 0.05). The magnitude of slopes decreased over time (weeks 0–3:4.27, weeks 3–6:3.02 and weeks 6–9:1.74, P < 0.05). The observed differences in weight gains between experimental groups were reflected in differences in coefficients
of variations (CVs) for body growth. RT had larger body weight (BW) CVs compared to BT (0.257 vs. 0.206, P < 0.01) indicating more uneven feed share among RT than among BT in general. RT-L had significantly higher BW CVs than all
other groups (0.300 vs. 0.184–0.229, P < 0.01). The observed differences in weight gains enhance size variations in terms of higher CVs, and this may have implications
for feeding tactics in aquaculture where large size variations in groups may be disadvantageous to fish farmers. 相似文献

Soft‐shell crab, a newly moulted crab having non‐calcified and hydrated soft exoskeleton, farming has been increasing tremendously in recent years throughout the world due to its high market price and consumer preferences. However, high aggressiveness and cannibalistic behaviour of mud crab limit its culture to an individual chamber system which ultimately makes the soft‐shell mud crab farming space and labour‐intensive. Therefore, the aim of this study was to improve the efficiency of soft‐shell crab production by autotomy of the claw and/or walking legs to reduce the moulting duration and intensify the culture system through double stocking in the existing individual chamber culture system. To achieve our objectives, a series of experiment were conducted at both indoor and on‐farm levels by removing the claw and/or walking legs of Scylla olivacea for two consecutive moulting cycles. Results showed that both claw ablation significantly (p < .01) shortened the moulting duration and increased the carapace width, weight gain, specific growth rate, feeding efficiency and yield parameter compared to the non‐ablated crabs more prominently at 1st moulting than the 2nd moulting in both indoor and on‐farm trials. Ablation of all walking legs while keeping the claw intact did not significantly influence (p > .05) the moulting duration and carapace width, but significantly (p < .01) improved the specific growth rate, weight gain, feeding efficiency and yield parameters at 1st moulting compared to the non‐ablation and unilateral three walking leg ablation groups. However, ablation of all appendages (both claw and walking legs) showed significant (p < .01) improvements of carapace width, weight gain, specific growth rate, feeding efficiency and yield parameters, and shortened the moulting duration up to 23 days from 34 days during 1st moulting and up to 27 days from 40 days at 2nd moulting. The survivals of different autotomized mud crabs were statistically non‐significant (p > .05) to the non‐autotomized crabs in various indoor and on‐farm trials. Besides improving the production performances, ablation of bilateral claw and all appendages allowed to double the stocking density in the existing individual chamber‐based soft‐shell crab farming that enhanced the production about threefold higher than the existing individual chamber‐based culture system. Finally, our results suggest that autotomy could be a promising technology for the commercial farming of soft‐shell mud crab in near future. 相似文献
