OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence and identify the predictors of food insecurity among households in Los Angeles County with incomes below 300% of the federal poverty level. METHODS: The Six-Item Short Form of the US Department of Agriculture's Household Food Security Scale was used as part of a 1999 county-wide, population-based, telephone survey. RESULTS: The prevalence of food insecurity was 24.4% and was inversely associated with household income. Other independent predictors of food insecurity included the presence of children in the household (odds ratio (OR) 1.7, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2-2.3) and a history of homelessness in the past five years (OR 5.6, 95% CI 3.4-9.4). CONCLUSION: Food insecurity is a significant public health problem among low-income households in Los Angeles County. Food assistance programmes should focus efforts on households living in and near poverty, those with children, and those with a history of homelessness. 相似文献

The chemical changes and artifact formation in daidai (Citrus aurantium L. var. Cyathifera Y. Tanaka) cold-pressed peel oil upon storage at 20, 5, and -21 degrees C for 3, 6, and 12 months were investigated using capillary gas chromatography (GC) and GC-MS. Major changes occurred in the oil stored at 20 and 5 degrees C. No changes were found at -21 degrees C. Monoterpene hydrocarbons decreased from 98.0 to 66.4% upon 12 months at 20 degrees C, while sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and alcohols increased from 0.1 to 2.4% and from 0.3 to 7.9%, respectively. Notable decreases of germacrene D, myrcene, linalyl acetate, and limonene occurred. Prominent increases of cis-carveol, trans-beta-farnesene, trans-p-2,8-menthadien-1-ol, linalool, and beta-caryophyllene were found. Thirty-four artifact compounds constituting 17.0% of the total volatile compounds were formed upon 12 months at 20 degrees C. The artifacts consisted of 13 alcohols (6.0%), five carbonyl compounds (5.3%), seven esters (4.9%), three epoxides (0.4%), four hydrocarbons (0.3%), and two unidentified. The prominent artifact compounds were (+)-carvone, trans,trans-farnesyl acetate, sabinene hydrate, 1-octen-3-ol, cis,cis-farnesyl acetate, and dihydrocarveol acetate. This paper compares phosphorus (P) concentrations in sediments from two watersheds, one with, and one without, intensive animal agriculture. The watersheds are in the coastal plain of the Chesapeake Bay and have similar physiographic characteristics. Agriculture in the Pocomoke River, MD, watershed supplied 2.7 percent of all broiler chickens produced in the USA in 1997. Poultry litter is an abundant, local source of manure for crops. Broiler chickens are not produced in the Popes Creek, VA, watershed and poultry manure is, therefore, not a major source of fertilizer. The largest concentrations of P in sediment samples are found in floodplain and main-stem bottom sediment in both watersheds. Concentrations of total P and P extracted with 1N HCl are significantly larger in main-stem bottom sediments from the Pocomoke River than in main-stem bottom sediments from Popes Creek. Larger concentrations of P are associated with what are potentially redox sensitive iron oxyhydroxides in sediment samples from the Pocomoke River watershed than are associated with what are potentially redox sensitive iron oxyhydroxides in sediment samples from the Popes Creek watershed. Data for P and iron (Fe) concentrations in sediments from the Popes Creek watershed provide a numerical framework (baseline) with which to compare P and Fe concentrations in sediment from the Pocomoke River watershed. 相似文献

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is an essential part of Polish, Ukrainian, and Israeli cuisine. The aim of this investigation was to compare the changes in bioactive compounds, proteins, and antioxidant potentials in fresh Polish, Ukrainian, and Israeli garlic samples after subjection to cooking temperature. Dietary fiber and essential trace elements were comparable. The antioxidant potentials were determined by four scavenging methods using beta-carotene, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide (NO), and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS(*)(+)) radical cation with K(2)S(2)O(8) or MnO(2) assays. Polyphenols, tocopherols, proteins, and antioxidant potentials were higher in Polish garlic, but not significantly (P > 0.05). The SDS- and native-PAGE electrophoretic patterns of all three fresh garlic samples were without significant differences. Most of the proteins were in the molecular mass range of 24-97 kDa, and the more intensive major bands were concentrated at 50 and 12 kDa. The 50 kDa protein nearly disappears and the intensity of the 12 kDa lectin bands slightly decreases during cooking. It was observed that the bioactive compounds, antioxidant potential, and proteins in garlic decrease significantly after 20 min of cooking at 100 degrees C (P < 0.05). In conclusion, (a) the bioactive compounds, electrophoretic patterns, and antioxidant potential of fresh Polish, Ukrainian, and Israeli garlic samples are comparable; (b) garlic samples subjected to 100 degrees C during 20 min preserve their bioactive compounds, antioxidant potential, and protein profile and are comparable with fresh garlic; and (c) fresh garlic should be added to dishes cooked at 100 degrees C in the last 20 min of the cooking process. 相似文献

The negative consequences of lead shot ingestion have been demonstrated in captive birds, and the prevalence of embedded shot has been measured in wild waterfowl several times. However, the long-term consequences of these two indirect outcomes of hunting on waterfowl survival have merely been investigated. Using data from about 40,000 X-rayed teals (Anas crecca), this study attempts to evaluate these effects. We used multivariate logistic regressions to model the probability of carrying shot in the flesh or in the gizzard while testing for various explanatory variables such as sex, age, time or morphological measures like mass and flattened wing length. Because of technical issues, we used a non-parametric sign test rather than a complete capture-recapture analysis to evaluate the effect of shot on teal survival. This test was applied to the differences in time between ringing and recovery for lead categories (no lead shot, ?1 shot in the flesh but none in the gizzard, ?1 shot in the gizzard but none in the flesh) compared two by two. We show that, overall, males are more likely to carry embedded shot than females whereas the latter are more likely to carry lead pellets in the gizzard. Similarly, adults are more likely to carry shot in the flesh whereas first year individuals are more likely to have pellets in the gizzard. Embedded shot tend to accumulate in the ducks body over time, i.e. with the number of encounters with hunters, with no significant effect on survival. Conversely, the probability of carrying shot in the gizzard decreases over time, because lead-poisoning quickly leads the individual to death. Several possible biological interpretations are put forward to explain those results. This study demonstrates that negative impacts of ingested lead on teal survival arise after only one single pellet is ingested, advocating the ban of lead ammunition. 相似文献

Physoplexis comosa and Primula glaucescens, endemic to calcareous grasslands of the Lombardy Prealps, northern Italy, are protected under Annex IV of European Community Directive 92/43/EEC. Seed germination dynamics of these species were studied with the aim of producing appropriate germination protocols for use in ex situ conservation. Seeds were collected from Monte Barro (922 m a.s.l.) and for Primula glaucescens from three additional sites in a more central part of its range (1217-2521 m a.s.l.). Physoplexis comosa germinated only in sterile in vitro conditions, in which germination percentages were extremely low without a supply of gibberellic acid (GA3; 1.7%); the optimum GA3 concentration was 100 mg l−1 (> 90% germination), with lower germination at higher doses of 250-500 mg l−1. Primula glaucescens germinated in both sterile and non-sterile conditions and, although total germination was not affected by GA3 concentration, doses of 10-500 mg l−1 acted equally to prompt earlier and more rapid germination. The experiments were carried out on 3 bulls (body weight: 172, 229 and 193 kg), equipped with ileo-caecal cannulas and with catheters in the jugular veins on both sides. The offered pelleted ration consisted of straw 73%, molasses 12%, cereals 10%, ammonium hydrogen carbonate 3% and urea 2%. Feed intake amounted to about 3 kg per animal and day. During a preliminary period of 5 days 50% of ileal digesta were collected for 12 hours daily, deep-freezed and stored. In the main experiment 15N-urea was infused intravenously for 24 hours. During this period and during the following 6 hours ileal digesta were collected and replaced by precollected, unlabelled digesta. The urea metabolism was estimated by the 15N-labelling of blood urea, by the 15N-excretion via faeces and urea, by the appearance of 15N in ileal digesta and by the 15N-labelling of faecal NAN, NH3 and bacterial fraction. The time course of the 15N-labelling of plasma urea during infusion can be described by an exponential function. The urea flux rate was estimated from the calculated plateau value. The flux rate for the 3 animals was 28.8, 30.7 and 34.8 mumol per minute per kg0.75, respectively. During the infusion of 15N-urea 1.0-2.4% of the infused amount of 15N' appeared in ileal digesta, half of it in the TCA precipitable fraction. At the same time the 15N-labelling of faecal NH3 increased sharply, however, the 15N-labelling of the faecal bacterial fraction was smaller by one order of magnitude. Deficiency of fermentable substrates and problems of inhomogenity of the NH3 pool are supposed as reasons for this result. 30 to 50% of the urea flux entered the digestive tract, the direct entry of urea into the large intestine seems to be only very low. 相似文献

A simple, straightforward, cartographic modelling technique is presented for measuring relations between environmental characteristics and rare species distribution patterns. This approach is corroborated by digitizing rare bird distribution data for Tanzania and statistically analyzing these patterns in relation to geographic and environmental variables. Of the available natural resource data for Africa, only the vegetation and soils data appeared accurate enough to represent regional natural resource distribution patterns. Available data for Tanzania at the regional scale is not currently precise or comprehensive enough to analyze ongoing dynamic ecological processes.Statistical relations, associated with a study quadrangle within Tanzania, are documented for these parameters. Final confirmation of the accuracy of predictions about rare species diversity patterns will ensue from future field observations. When confirmed, this methodology can be used for setting conservation priorities in biologically little known regions of the world. 相似文献

Globalisation accelerates the dynamics of the network society and economy, in which distant relationships become functionally
more significant than local landscape relationships. This presents challenges and opportunities for landscape analysis. Using
social scientific concepts of global and local space, and ecological concepts of hierarchy, two qualitative case studies are
undertaken of urban fringe landscapes in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Christchurch, New Zealand. They reveal a convergence of
landscape pattern over time, but this disguises significant differences in underlying socio-economic process and institutional
response. There are several implications for landscape analysis and policy. First, there is a need for studies grounded in
particular landscapes that acknowledge both local spatial landscape relationships and non spatial ‘global’ processes. Second, the transformation of landscapes through urbanisation provides a useful focus for
the connection of landscape ecological understanding of landscape systems with social scientific understanding of human agency
and social structure. Third, there is a significant challenge in how to develop local and regional institutions and policies
that have the capacity to utilise and apply these diverse analytical perspectives. 相似文献
