Area of Occupancy (AOO), is a measure of species geographical ranges commonly used for species red listing. In most cases, AOO is estimated using reported localities of species distributions at coarse grain resolution, providing measures subjected to uncertainties of data quality and spatial resolution. To illustrate the ability of fine-resolution species distribution models for obtaining new measures of species ranges and their impact in conservation planning, we estimate the potential AOO of an endangered species in alpine environments. We use field occurrences of relict Empetrum nigrum and maximum entropy modeling to assess whether different sampling (expert versus systematic surveys) may affect AOO estimates based on habitat suitability maps, and the differences between such measurements and traditional coarse-grid methods. Fine-scale models performed robustly and were not influenced by survey protocols, providing similar habitat suitability outputs with high spatial agreement. Model-based estimates of potential AOO were significantly smaller than AOO measures obtained from coarse-scale grids, even if the first were obtained from conservative thresholds based on the Minimal Predicted Area (MPA). As defined here, the potential AOO provides spatially-explicit measures of species ranges which are permanent in the time and scarcely affected by sampling bias. The overestimation of these measures may be reduced using higher thresholds of habitat suitability, but standard rules as the MPA permit comparable measures among species. We conclude that estimates of AOO based on fine-resolution distribution models are more robust tools for risk assessment than traditional systems, allowing a better understanding of species ranges at habitat level.  相似文献

"Mapuey" tubers in Venezuela are staple food for indigenous peoples from the Caribbean coast and Amazon regions. Noticeable differences between genotypes of yam starches were observed. Granules were large, triangular, or shell-shaped with monomodal particle size distribution between 24.5 and 35.5 μm. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses revealed onset gelatinization temperatures from 69.1 to 73.4 °C with high gelatinization enthalpy changes from 22.4 to 25.3 J g(-1). All X-ray diffractograms of starches exhibit B-type crystallinity. Crystallinity degrees varied from 24% to 40%. The highest crystallinity was found for the genotype having the highest amylose content. Iodo-colorimetric, amperometric, and DSC amylose determinations varied from 1.4 to 8.7%, 2.2 to 5.9%, and 1.4 to 3.5% for Amazonian genotypes, in comparison with commercial Mapuey starches: 12.0, 9.5, and 8.7%, respectively. Solubility and swelling power at 90 °C varied from 2.1 to 4.4% and 20.5 to 37.0%, respectively. Gel clarity fluctuated from 22.4 to 79.2%, and high rapid visco analyzer (RVA) viscosity was developed at 5% starch suspension (between 1430 and 2250 cP). Amylopectin weight average molar mass M(w), radius of gyration R(G), hydrodynamic coefficient ν(G), and apparent molecular density d(Gapp) were determined using high-performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) and asymmetrical flow field flow fractionation (A4F) techniques coupled with multiangle laser light scattering (MALLS) on the Dioscorea trifida genotypes exhibiting the lowest and highest amylose contents. Amylopectins showed very similar molecular conformations. M(w) values were 1.15 × 10(8) and 9.06 × 10(7) g mol(-1) using HPSEC and A4F, respectively, thus, 3-5 times lower than those reported with the same techniques for other yam species, and very close to those of potato and cassava amylopectins. This discovery of a new natural amylose-free starch in the neglected yam "Mapuey" could present some potential for the food industry.  相似文献

Two microalgae, Porphyridium cruentum and Platymonas subcordiformis , were subjected to a 3-day exposure of ultraviolet band A (UVA) radiation at 365 nm (~1.32-1.35 W/m(2)) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (~11.56-11.62 W/m(2)) followed by a 3-day UVA-free (exposure to PAR only) treatment. UVA inhibited the growth of P. subcordiformis and P. cruentum during the UVA-exposure period. Significant increases (p < 0.05) of total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), saturated fatty acids (SFAs), and lipid content were found in P. cruentum during the UVA exposure period, whereas such increases in P. subcordiformis were observed only at the end of the UVA-free period. Concentrations of individual PUFAs including linoleic acid, eicosatrienoic acid, and eicosapentaenoic acid as well as total carotenoids were significantly increased (p < 0.05) at different stages of the UVA treatment in both microalgae. UVA (365 nm) radiation has the potential application for producing microalgal biomass rich in PUFAs and carotenoids as a natural functional ingredient.  相似文献

Brazilian green coffee beans of Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora species were roasted to light, medium, and dark roast degrees and analyzed in relation to furan content by using an in-house validated method based on gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry preceded by headspace solid-phase microextraction. Furan was not detected in green coffees, whereas levels between 911 and 5852 μg/kg were found in the roasted samples. Higher concentrations were found in Coffea canephora species and darker ground coffees. Some of the potential furan precursors were observed in significant amounts in green coffee, especially sucrose and linoleic acid, but their concentrations could not be correlated to furan formation. Additionally, coffee brews were prepared from roasted ground coffees by using two different procedures, and furan levels in the beverages varied from <10 to 288 μg/kg. The factor that most influenced the furan content in coffee brew was the brewing procedure.  相似文献

This study evaluated the anti-inflammatory efficacy of the crude extract (CE), the fractions derived from hexane (HEX), ethyl acetate (AcOEt), n-butanol (BuOH), and aqueous (Aq) and isolated compounds (oleanolic acid or kaempferitrin) obtained from the aerial parts of Lotus corniculatus var. Sa?o Gabriel in mice with bradykinin-induced pleurisy. Swiss mice were used for the In Vivo experiments. Inflammatory parameters [leukocytes; exudate concentrations; myeloperoxidase and adenosine-deaminase activities, and nitric oxide and interleukin-17 levels] were evaluated 4 h after pleurisy induction. The crude extract of Lotus corniculatus, its derived fractions, and isolated compounds inhibited leukocytes and the exudate. This inhibitory effect was associated with decreased of myeloperoxidase and adenosine-deaminase activities, nitric oxide products, and IL-17A levels. Lotus corniculatus presented important anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting leukocyte influx and exudate concentrations. This effect was directly related to the inhibition of nitric oxide and interleukinin17 levels. Oleanolic acid and kaempferitrin can account for these anti-inflammatory effects.  相似文献

Diplopods are components of the edaphic fauna, which makes them suitable bioindicators of soil quality. Some characteristics of the fat body of diplopods make it suitable for ecotoxicological studies. This organ, composed of diffuse tissue, fills the body cavity; it presents intense metabolic activity associated with lipid, glycogen, protein, and uric acid storage, being also responsible for storage, neutralization, and excretion of substances that are not useful to the organism. The present study aimed to investigate whether the perivisceral fat body of Rhinocricus padbergi can be used as a target organ in ecotoxicological studies and to identify possible histological and histochemical biomarkers in this organ. Upon examining the perivisceral fat body of individuals of R. padbergi exposed to different concentrations of industrial soil contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (?? 2,749.0 mg/kg) and metals (?? 40,355.8 mg/kg), we have found evidence that this organ is sensitive to environmental pollutants present in the soil. The loss of integrity of the cell boundary associated with cytoplasmatic disorganization and depletion in total proteins, neutral polysaccharides, calcium, and lipids can be considered stress biomarkers for R. padbergi.  相似文献

Improved sperm selection techniques are needed to increase the efficiency of equine-assisted reproduction. Single layer centrifugation (SLC) of spermatozoa has been shown to improve the quality of stallion sperm samples. In this study, the functionality of selected stallion spermatozoa was tested by intracytoplasmic sperm injection of equine oocytes after selection by SLC through Androcoll-E or by discontinuous density gradient centrifugation (DGC) through Redigrad and Tyrode's medium with added albumin, lactate, and pyruvate. The mean cleavage rates of the injected oocytes from SLC- and DGC-selected spermatozoa were 67% and 66%, respectively, whereas the proportion of blastocysts developing from cleaved oocytes was 28% and 22%, respectively (P > .05, not significant). An incidental finding was that there was a tendency for SLC-selected spermatozoa to have a higher percentage of spermatozoa with normal morphology than DGC (70% ± 22% vs. 58% ± 38%) and for more blastocysts to be obtained from subfertile ejaculates (21 [19.6%] vs. 15 [14.4%], respectively). In further experiments, stallion spermatozoa bound to hyaluronan, although binding may depend on the semen extender and sperm treatment as well as incubation time. In conclusion, SLC-selected stallion spermatozoa function normally when injected into oocytes. SLC may potentially be better than DGC at selecting spermatozoa from subfertile ejaculates, but this effect needs rigorous investigation with a much larger sample size. Use of the hyaluronan-binding assay for assessing the potential fertility of stallion spermatozoa may be useful but requires further evaluation.  相似文献
