The postharvest changes of the white asparagus cell wall have been studied in relation to the toughening process along the length of a spear that was divided into three sections: apical, middle, and basal. Polysaccharides underwent significant turnover during storage. Uronic acid concentration decreased in all sections and in almost all polysaccharide fractions, while neutral sugars increased very slightly in the apical section, decreased in the middle, and increased in the basal one. Xylose, glucose, and galactose are the main neutral sugars implicated in the turnover; xylose accumulated in the hemicellulose fractions of the middle and basal sections, glucose decreased in the hemicellulose and cellulose fractions of the middle section and increased in the cellulose fraction of the basal one, and galactose disappeared mostly from the cellulose fractions of the three sections. Lignin increased most in the middle section and least in the basal one. No increase was detected in the apical one. No important increases of wall phenolics were detected in any part of the spear. The hardening process was limited only to the basal section.  相似文献

Fruit weight is related to ovary weight in olive (Olea europaea L.)   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Fruit size is an important parameter both for scientific understanding and for commercial purposes. In many species, mature fruit size is often related to floral ovary size, but no literature exists in olive that demonstrates such a relationship. Previous work suggests that olive cultivars with different fruit sizes have similar cell number and size in the ovary transectional area, but ovary and fruit dry weight was not measured. In the present study, ovary dry weight and fruit dry weight during the whole fruit development season until harvest were measured in olive cultivars with different fruit size, over three years. Flower dry weight was also measured. Fruit weight at harvest was strongly correlated to ovary weight at bloom, both in single-year data and when data from three years were pooled. Flower dry weight, excluding the ovary, was also correlated to ovary dry weight. Ovary dry weight was strongly correlated not only to the fruit dry weight at maturity, but also at any date during fruit development. The mature fruit/ovary dry weight ratio ranged between 1000 and 4000 among cultivars, but was not correlated to the fruit dry weight at maturity. These results suggest that, in olive, fruit weight is genetically controlled through the ovary weight at bloom. This knowledge may have implications in the understanding of fruit set and source-sink relationships in olive.  相似文献

Triploid Crassostrea gigas were cultured during 13 months in Nestier‐type oyster trays. The impact of environmental parameters on the physiological and immunological parameters was evaluated. Temperature, salinity and seston were recorded monthly. Seventeen oysters were sampled monthly for immunological and condition index (CI) analyses. Samples were obtained as a haemolymph lysate supernatant (HLS). Protein content was determined using the Bradford method. The activity of hydrolytic enzymes was determined using the API ZYM kit and the lysoplate assay. Seston showed different patterns throughout the cycle. Condition index showed a positive correlation with the protein content of HLS. Protein showed a negative correlation with temperature. Eleven hydrolytic enzymes were detected in samples and higher enzymatic activity corresponded to leucine arylamidase and esterase. Leucine arylamidase and lysozyme activity showed a positive correlation with temperature. Oyster mortality was 28% in our modules and 70% in the oyster farm. Oysters showed low values of CI and haemolymph protein content in summer–autumn when mortalities were observed in the culture system. This finding suggests that these stressed oysters may have insufficient energy to invest in their immune system. It appears that oyster mortality in the culture system resulted from a combination of animal overcrowding, high temperature and low salinity.  相似文献

Context

Connectivity is fundamental to understanding how landscape form influences ecological function. However, uncertainties persist due to the difficulty and expense of gathering empirical data to drive or to validate connectivity models, especially in urban areas, where relationships are multifaceted and the habitat matrix cannot be considered to be binary.

Objectives

This research used circuit theory to model urban bird flows (i.e. ‘current’), and compared results to observed abundance. The aims were to explore the ability of this approach to predict wildlife flows and to test relationships between modelled connectivity and variation in abundance.

Methods

Circuitscape was used to model functional connectivity in Bedford, Luton/Dunstable, and Milton Keynes, UK, for great tits (Parus major) and blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus), drawing parameters from published studies of woodland bird flows in urban environments. Model performance was then tested against observed abundance data.

Results

Modelled current showed a weak yet positive agreement with combined abundance for P. major and C. caeruleus. Weaker correlations were found for other woodland species, suggesting the approach may be expandable if re-parameterised.

Conclusions

Trees provide suitable habitat for urban woodland bird species, but their location in large, contiguous patches and corridors along barriers also facilitates connectivity networks throughout the urban matrix. Urban connectivity studies are well-served by the advantages of circuit theory approaches, and benefit from the empirical study of wildlife flows in these landscapes to parameterise this type of modelling more explicitly. Such results can prove informative and beneficial in designing urban green space and new developments.

Potato virus Y (PVY) is a major potato pathogen affecting potato yields worldwide. Thiamin, a water-soluble B vitamin (vitamin B1) has been shown to boost the plant’s immunity, thereby increasing resistance against pathogens. In this study, we tested different concentrations of thiamin (1 mM, 10 mM, 50 mM, 100 mM) and multiple thiamin applications (once, biweekly and monthly) on potato resistance to PVY in Ranger Russet potatoes. Plants were mechanically inoculated with PVYN:O. This PVY strain is known for causing well-defined foliar symptoms. We collected leaflets weekly through April and May 2015 and tested them with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay specific to PVY as well as by real time quantitative RT-PCR. These assays allowed us to determine the presence and level of PVY in different parts of the plants. We found that the highest thiamin concentration treatment (100 mM) produced the lowest virus level in potatoes across all dates and leaflet samples. Also, it was found that multiple applications of thiamin had a positive effect on reducing virus level, especially when thiamin was applied every four weeks.  相似文献

Human settlement is a formidable agent of change affecting fundamental ecological processes. Decisions governing these land-use changes occur almost exclusively at the local level and, as a result, they are made at many different locations and times. Consequently, it is difficult for ecologists to provide needed scientific support for these choices. We built an information system designed to support conservation decisions at local scales by offering data over the Internet. We collaborated with local stakeholders (e.g., developers, planners, politicians, land owners, environmental activists) to design the system. This collaboration produced several generalizations about effective design of information systems to support conservation. The most important of these is the idea that ecological data and analysis must be understood by those who will be affected by the decisions. Also, planning for conservation is a process that uses scientific data, but that ultimately depends on the expression of human values. A major challenge landscape ecologists face is to extend general landscape principles to provide specific scientific information needed for local land-use planning.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the seminal characteristics of Nile tilapia males exposed to water‐borne 17α,20β‐dihydroxy‐4‐pregnen‐3‐one (17,20βP). Male Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) were exposed to the steroidal pre‐ovulatory pheromone 17,20βP, added to water at a concentration of 5×10?9 M. The pheromone‐exposed males had higher sperm volume and concentration. In addition, the spermatozoa contained in the sperm had higher motility and the motility duration was longer than ethanol‐exposed males (control group). The percentage of live spermatozoa was not affected by the treatments. Our results suggest that this pheromone can improve sperm quality characteristics and could become a non‐invasive method for enhancing spawning in Nile tilapia.  相似文献

A study was conducted in Alberta to determine the seroprevalence of Neospora caninum in feedlot calves purchased from various auction markets throughout western Canada. Four feedlots (1 feedlot from each of the Airdrie and High River areas and 2 feedlots from the Strathmore area) were selected for sampling. At each feedlot, a random 10% sample of feedlot steer and bull calves entering the feedlot from September 2001 to December 2001 were enrolled in the study until there were a maximum of 500 animals enrolled per feedlot. Blood samples were collected from 1976 male animals at the time of entry to the 4 study feedlots. The animals represented 375 groups purchased from 70 sale points throughout British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Of the 1976 animals tested, 128 animals tested positive for antibodies to N. caninum. The prevalence and adjusted 95% confidence limits for N. caninum in beef calves on entrance to the feedlot in western Canada were 6.5% (95% CI, 5.1 to 8.2). There were no significant (P > or = 0.05) associations between the risk of treatment, the risk of designation as "chronic," and the risk of death and antibodies to N. caninum either before or after adjusting for feedlot, entry weight, entry date, and clustering of disease within lots at each feedlot. In addition, there was no significant (P > or = 0.05) association between serological status and feedlot entry weight or average daily gain. Note that there was no information available on feed conversion because the calves were mixed within existing commercial feedlot pens and the actual feed intake of each animal could not be determined. Adjustment for the concentration of antibodies to bovine viral diarrhea virus on arrival did not change any of the examined associations between N. caninum status and calf health or performance. The results of this study demonstrated that the prevalence of N. caninum in feedlot calves in western Canada was less than the prevalence reported in the United States. Additional studies are required to determine whether the inferior rate of gain and feed efficiency observed in the southern United States with animals testing positive for antibodies to N. caninum also occurs under the management conditions used in western Canada.  相似文献
