Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus) is an important food‐legume crop for resource‐poor farmers in the developing world. However, given its cultivation in the most underprivileged regions, the crop has not received appropriate scientific attention particularly from the genomic perspective, thereby giving it a status of genomic orphan. Nevertheless, some recent studies have attempted to develop modern molecular tools to strengthen the genetic and genomic research. In the present investigation, a comprehensive collection comprising 176 accessions was analysed using EST‐simple sequence repeats (SSRs). The SSR analysis revealed existence of a total of 51 alleles with an average polymorphic information content value of 0.35. A moderate level of gene diversity was noticed that ranged from 0.04 to 0.73 with an average of 0.43. Noticeably, two distinct subpopulations were recovered using cluster analysis. In addition, the presence of admixtures in population reflected the strong possibilities of gene flow between the accessions across the geographical boundary. In summary, we provide additional insights about the informativeness of available EST‐SSR markers along with an extended understanding of relatedness, genetic structure and gene flow in an under‐researched legume crop.  相似文献

Rice–wheat (RW) production system, which covers over 13.5 million ha in the Indo-Gangetic Plains of south Asia, is vital for food and nutritional security and livelihood of millions of poor people in this part of the region. Availability of irrigation water under projected climate change scenarios is a great concern, and demonstration of the impact of different irrigation regimes on rice, wheat, and system yields is essential to adopt suitable water saving technologies to minimize risk. This study tested the ability of the agricultural production systems simulator (APSIM) model to simulate the effects of different irrigation regimes on yield, irrigation water requirement, and irrigation water productivity (WPi) of rice, wheat, and RW system in upper-gangetic plains of India. The long-term simulated rice yield showed a steadily declining trend at an average rate of 120 kg ha?1 yr?1 (R 2 = 0.94, p < 0.05), while long-term simulated wheat yields showed a lower declining trend at an average rate of 48 kg ha?1 yr?1 (R 2 = 0.48, p < 0.05). The highest WPi of 8.31 kg ha?1 mm?1 was observed under RW system with the rice irrigation (IR) regime of 8 days alternate wetting and drying (AWD) and five irrigations for wheat with a yield penalty of 25.5 %. The next highest WPi was observed in the treatment with a 5-day AWD regime in rice and five irrigations for wheat, with a yield penalty of 20.1 %. Thus, we can suggest that a 5-day AWD irrigation regime for rice combined with five irrigations during wheat could be the best option under water limiting situations.  相似文献

Capacitation is a biological phenomenon occurring prior to fertilization and is a multiple event process. Many physiological and biochemical changes takes place during the process; these changes are related to lipid composition of membrane, intracellular modulation of ion concentration, protein phosphorylation, sperm movement and membrane permeability. These events occur when the sperm is exposed to the new environment of ion concentration in the female reproductive tract. Ions such as bicarbonate and calcium facilitate capacitation by activating adenylyl cyclase, thus initiating protein kinase A (PKA) signalling cascade. Extracellular‐regulated kinase pathway is activated by ligand binding to the membrane receptors and intracellular activation by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Activation of these pathways leads to the phosphorylation of different proteins, which is associated with events such as capacitation, hyperactivation and acrosome reaction that are essential for successful fertilization. Extensive studies were carried out on protein phosphorylation in relation to capacitation, but its role still remains ambiguous.  相似文献

One hundred and twenty school girls in the age group of 13–15 years from four Government schools of Ludhiana city were selected for the study. On the basis of their family income they were divided into three experimental groups i.e. income group I (IgI), income group II (IgII) and income group III (IgIII). The results showed that the intake was low for all the foods. However, the consumption of fruits, milk and milk-products, sugar and jaggery, fats and oils by the subjects of IgII and IgIII was significantly higher (p<0.05) than IgI. The mean daily intake of energy, protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A & vitamin C was inadequate while the intake of fibre was adequate by the subjects as compared to ICMR recommendations. There was no significant difference in energy, protein and iron intakes among the subjects of three groups. However, the fibre intake by the subjects of IgI was significantly higher (p<0.05) than the subjects of IgIII, whereas the intake of calcium, vitamin A and ascorbic acid by the subjects of IgII & IgIII was significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of IgI. The average body weights and heights of the subjects were normal. The haemoglobin (Hb) level of the subjects ranged from 8.5–12.5 g/dl with a mean value of 10.73+0.07 and reported that only 23 percent of the subjects had acceptable level.  相似文献

Solar gravity modes have been actively sought because they directly probe the solar core (below 0.2 solar radius), but they have not been conclusively detected in the Sun because of their small surface amplitudes. Using data from the Global Oscillation at Low Frequency instrument, we detected a periodic structure in agreement with the period separation predicted by the theory for gravity dipole modes. When studied in relation to simulations including the best physics of the Sun determined through the acoustic modes, such a structure favors a faster rotation rate in the core than in the rest of the radiative zone.  相似文献

We describe a participatory plant breeding (PPB) programme in rice for the rainfed uplands of eastern India. Collaborative participation (farmers grew and selected in segregating materials in their fields) and consultative participation (farmers selected among progenies in researchers' plots) were used. The PPB was started with only two crosses and, of these, Kalinga III/IR64 was the most successful and produced two released varieties: Ashoka 200F from collaborative breeding and Ashoka 228 from consultative breeding. Both yielded significantly more than control varieties, including Kalinga III, in research trials and in participatory trials in farmers' fields. Qualitative data from participatory trials was highly informative, statistically analysable, and cheaper to obtain than quantitative data. In low-yielding research-station and on-farm trials the two new upland varieties showed no significant genotype × environment interaction with the check varieties. However, in higher-yielding All India Coordinated Rice Improvement Project trials, both varieties were more adapted to low yielding environments than the national check variety. Farmers liked the varieties for their early maturity, improved lodging resistance, higher fodder and grain yield, long-slender grains and excellent cooking quality. Before certified seed production, farmer groups have produced large quantities of seed that have spread widely through informal channels. The returns from PPB, compared to conventional breeding, were higher because it cost less, the genetic gains per year were higher, and the benefits to farmers were realised earlier. Field experiments were conducted during 1993/94 and 1994/95 in the sub-humid tropic environment of northern India to identify suitable irrigation schedule(s) for winter maize (December to May). Based on plant growth stages, viz. knee-high, tasselling, flowering, silking, grain-filling and dough, which occurred, respectively, at 55, 75, 95, 105, 125 and 145 days after planting, the crop was subjected to six irrigation treatments, which were: no irrigation (I0); irrigation given at all the growth stages (I1); irrigation missed at knee-high (I2); at knee-high and dough (I3); at knee-high, flowering and grain-filling (I4); and at knee-high, flowering, silking and dough stages (I5). The change in profile soil water content, (W (depletion) of the entire crop-growing season was found to be in the order I0 >I5 >I4 >I3 >I2 >I1. Of the total net water use (NWU), about 87% was evapotranspiration and 13% deep percolation losses. The NWU was highest (472 and 431 mm) under I1 and lowest (223 and 240 mm) under the I0 treatment during the two cropping seasons. Compared to I1, NWU in I3 decreased by 23% and 12.3% and in I4 by 33.8% and 24.2% in the two cropping seasons. However, there was no statistically significant difference (at LSD, P=0.05) between yields of the I1 to I4 treatments during either year. The NWU was found to be in the order I1 >I2 >I3 >I4 >I5 >I0, whereas the water-use efficiency (WUE) based on NWU was found to be in the reverse order: I5 >I4 >I3 >I0 >I2 >I1. Maximum yield (5.14 t ha-1) with WUE of 1.39 kg m-3 was obtained under the I3 treatment. However, optimum yield (4.91 t ha-1) with high WUE of 1.54 kg m-3 was under I4. Accordingly, irrigation applications greater than 240 mm did not provide additional yield of winter maize. Frequent irrigations (I1) proved detrimental to grain yield of winter maize in the northern Indian plains, especially under cool weather conditions, where minimum temperature (6°C) can be accompanied by occasional frost.  相似文献

Genetic and metabolomic demarcations between two Indian and one American congeners of Genus Panax have been discerned. Genomic DNA was isolated from the root derived callus cultures of these species and amplified by AP-PCR. RAPD analyses of the DNA with six most responding arbitrary oligonucleotide decamers provided a total of 70 reproducible bands for computation of the similarity matrix amongst the Panax species. Only 18 of these were monomorphic giving an estimate of about 74% polymorphism among the test species examined. The similarity coefficient values based on the amplification pattern support an equidistant position of the three test species. The molecular demarcations between the species are also manifested in terms of their characteristic cultural requirements, in vitro growth kinetics, regeneration competence and ginsenoside complement of their calli. The Indian congeners i.e. P. sikkimensis and P. pseudoginseng were distinguishable by higher proportions of ginsenoside Rf and Ro (40% and 20%, respectively) in the crude saponin fractions. Furthermore P. quinquefolium calli mainly accumulated ginsenoside Rb2 and Rg1, whilst P. sikkimensis callus was rich in Rd fraction. P. quinquefolium showed high similarity with P. sikkimensis with respect to plasticity and totipotency for somatic embryogeny whereas P. pseudoginseng callus was highly recalcitrant and lacked regenerative capacity. The chemical and genetic fingerprints alongwith morphogenetic responses of the three species under controlled in vitro environment strongly advance the case of P. sikkimensis as an independent species, rather than a conglomerate of location specific variety or sub-species of P. pseudoginseng. The findings are also of relevance to formulations and evaluation of ginseng-based health foods.  相似文献
