Herpesviral infections frequently occur in horses. The objective of this study was to investigate the possible association of equine herpesviruses (EHV-1, EHV-2, EHV-3, EHV-4, EHV-5) with other causes of abortion, neonatal mortality or placental disorder. Sixty-seven abortions, 22 stillbirths, 14 cases of neonatal foal mortality and 3 cases of placental disease were investigated for infectious and non-infectious causes. Type-specific nested PCR assays and virus isolation were performed to detect EHV infections. A cause of fetal loss or placental disease was reached in 68 out 116 (58.7 %) cases. Twenty-seven cases were positive for EHV, and 22/27 (81.5 %) were positive for EHV-1 (16 neuropathogenic and 6 non-neuropathogenic strains), 4 (14.8 %) for EHV-2 and 3 (11.1 %) for EHV-5. The association between EHV infections and other etiological agents was statistically significant (two sided P?=?0.002). The odds ratio of EHV DNA associated with other diagnoses, especially with bacterial infection and premature placental separation, was 10.88 (95 % confidence interval: 2.15–55.16). EHV-1 was the main viral cause of pregnancy loss in this study, also associated with other etiological agents, including EHV-2 and EHV-5. The latter viruses in particular need to be more fully investigated to elucidate what role either or both may play as co-infecting agents with other established infectious causes of reproductive disease.  相似文献

Fusarium crown and root rot, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. radicis-lycopersici ( Forl ), is one of the most destructive soilborne diseases of tomato in Italy. Chlorate-resistant, nitrate-nonutilizing ( nit ) mutants were used to determine vegetative compatibility among 191 isolates of Forl collected in five geographic regions (Calabria, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Sardinia, Sicily) in Italy. The isolates were assigned to five vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs): 65 isolates to VCG 0090; 99 to VCG 0091; 23 to VCG 0092; two to VCG 0093; and two to VCG 0096. The population structure of Forl in Italy is similar to that reported for Israel, and differs from that found in North Atlantic European countries, where VCG 0094 is predominant. The stability of prototrophic heterokaryons originating from hyphal anastomosis between compatible complementary nit mutants was assessed through conidial analysis and mycelial mass transfer. Most monoconidial cultures (84%) recovered from 117 prototrophic heterokaryons were nit mutants, indicating that heterokaryons generally do not proliferate well through conidiation; most of the 177 prototrophic heterokaryons examined were unstable, and only 9% sustained prototrophic growth through the tenth mycelial transfer upon subculturing. The prototrophic growth is proposed to be maintained through restoration of the heterokaryotic state by continual anastomosis between adjacent homokaryotic hyphae. Since heterokaryosis is a prerequisite for parasexual recombination, we speculate that this mechanism is unlikely to play a major role in generating the VCG diversity found among Forl or other strains of F. oxysporum.  相似文献

To evaluate the effect of simplifying the beta-ketoamide system present in active isolated metabolites from Penicillium brevicompactum (2 and 3) on the activity, new analogues with a monocarbonylic amide functionality have been obtained. In this way, the insecticidal and fungicidal activities have been improved in relation to the natural products taken as lead molecules. Thus, two of the synthetic analogues (5a and 5b) showed very important insecticidal activities against third-instar nymphs of Oncopeltus fasciatus Dallas, with acute LD(50) values of 3.0 and 1.5 microg/cm(2), respectively. Moreover, some analogues showed good levels of fungicidal activity against a wide range of commercially important and taxonomically diverse fungi; remarkably, compound 7c has proved to be highly active against Colletotrichum gloesporoides and Colletotrichum coccodes, with ED(50) values of 2.04 and 11.7 microg/mL, respectively.  相似文献

The veterinary public health (VPH) program at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) began in 1949 when an arrangement with the newly founded World Health Organization made PAHO its Regional Office for the Americas to serve as the specialized health agency both for the Organization of American States and the United Nations. It started as a Section of Veterinary Medicine to help eradicate rabies on both sides of the US-Mexico border, and PAHO grew to be the biggest VPH program in the world. By providing a political and technical base, PAHO assisted its member states to organize and develop their national VPH programs and activities, and it provides technical cooperation and works with their national counterparts to solve national and local problems.In the 1980s and 1990s, PAHO concentrated that cooperation on several, specific needs: the elimination of dog-transmitted human rabies, hemispheric eradication of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), regional action planning for food safety, control/eradication of bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis, and surveillance and prevention of emerging zoonoses and food-borne diseases. The Pan American centers developed a number of diagnostic antigens and a continental system for the surveillance of FMD and vesicular diseases, using geographic quadrant technology to augment sensitivity, analyze data, and make decisions. Another visible accomplishment is the elimination of hydatidosis in the endemic countries and regions of the southern cone.In addition, the VPH program of PAHO pioneered the mobilization of the private sector to participate in official programs. Nevertheless, privatization of animal and human health services has had a negative effect on human resources and infrastructure by weakening essential epidemiological functions in some countries.Today, there is a need for closer coordination between veterinary medicine and medical services. Practically all potential bioterrorism agents are zoonoses, and it is cost-effective to control them at the veterinary level, providing the first line of defense. The opportunities for VPH are boundless, but the challenge is to be able to apply the plethora of available research results and knowledge. What we will need is a new breed of veterinarians who will lead and provide us with a vision, like those we honored in 2005 at the Schwabe Symposium Honoring the Lifetime Achievements of Dr. James H. Steele: veterinarians in public health who will be in the forefront of policy setting, decision-making, and allocation of resources, and veterinarians who will articulate and provide a strategic direction to our unique professional skills.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The chemosterilisation technique has been demonstrated to reduce the population and fruit damage of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), in citrus orchards. Field trials showed efficacy by reducing the fruit fly population, which was progressively achieved by continuous application of lufenuron to several generations. Different authors have suggested that field trials should be carried out in isolated or wide areas in order to reduce fruit fly intrusion and obtain best results. To this end, a wide‐area trial over 3600 hectares has been under investigation in Valencia (Spain) since 2002 to validate the chemosterilisation technique against the fruit fly. The whole area was treated with 24 traps ha?1, using more than 86 000 traps in the field trial. RESULTS: A continuous decrease in fruit fly population was observed over the 4 years under trial. Moreover, results showed a significant reduction in persimmon damage in the chemosterilant treatment area compared with a malathion aerial treatment area. In the case of citrus damage, no significant differences were obtained between malathion and chemosterilant treatments. CONCLUSION: The chemosterilant method reduces Mediterranean fruit fly populations, and therefore it is a candidate treatment to replace aerial treatments with insecticides in order to suppress this pest. In addition, the efficacy of chemosterilant treatment is increasing year after year. The possibility of using this technique combined with other control methods is discussed. Cacao agroforestry systems (cacao-AFS) produce abundant litter. After decomposing, litter releases nutrients into the soil. The aim of this research was to estimate litter production and its nutrient content in 35- and 55-year-old cacao-AFS. The research was conducted in three cacao-AFS of each age, in Cardenas, Tabasco, México. Four traps per cacao-AFS were used to collect litter. Litter was collected every 15 days for one year. It was then fractioned into cacao leaves, shade tree leaves, petioles, branches and stems, and cacao flowers and fruits. To determine nutrient content of litter, samples were composited by age of cacao-AFS and by season of the year. Then chemical analysis was done in triplicate. Data were subjected to analysis of variance, orthogonal contrasts, and Student t and Duncan tests. Cacao-AFS produce litter all year. Thirty-five-year-old cacao-AFS produced more litter than 55-year-old cacao-AFS (2042 vs 1570 kg DM ha?1 year?1). Except for the shade tree leaf fraction (559.5 vs 642 kg DM ha?1), 35-year-old cacao-AFS were superior to 55-year-old cacao-AFS in all the other litter fractions. Cacao leaf fraction was the main source of litter in cacao-AFS of both ages. Neither age of cacao-AFS nor the season of the year affected N, K, Zn or S content in litter. Orthogonal contrasts indicated statistical differences between ages of cacao-AFS for P, Ca, and Fe content in litter. Both N–P–K–Ca–Mg contents in litter of 35-year-old cacao-AFS (1.2–0.4–1.2–1.7–0.4%) and in litter of 55-year-old cacao-AFS (1.1–0.6–1.2–1.4–0.4%) are enough to recover the nutrients extracted by the cacao crop.  相似文献

Considerable efforts have been devoted to understanding the courtship behavior and pheromone communication of medflies; however, the sex pheromone composition is still a controversial subject. The discovery of new components affecting medfly behavior would be of interest for medfly control methods based on semiochemicals. This work describes volatile compounds emitted by Ceratitis capitata collected using solid phase microextraction. The volatile study was conducted according to an experimental design with three factors (sex, age, and mating status) assumed to be relevant for better understanding the chemical communication. Emission data were treated by means of principal component analysis, a statistical methodology not previously applied to the study of volatiles emitted by fruit flies. The characterization of emission patterns could be useful for the selection of compounds to be further investigated in biological assays to improve knowledge of the key semiochemicals involved in medfly behavior.  相似文献
