Chive gnat, Bradysia odoriphaga Yang & Zhang (Diptera: Sciaridae), is the most serious pest of Chinese chive, Allium tuberosum. The present study aimed at determining the biocontrol potential of different indigenous entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) isolates for the management of chive gnat in China. The virulence of 145 EPN isolates belonging to 13 species against B. odoriphaga was evaluated in the laboratory, and then the most promising isolates (Steinernema ceratophorum HQA-87; S. hebeiense JY-82; S. feltiae JY-90, JY-17; S. litorale HXY-68; Heterorhabditis indica ZZ-68; H. bacteriophora NY-63, HQ-94; and H. megidis LFS-10) were selected for further experiments. The mortality of fourth instar B. odoriphaga was significantly affected by nematode isolates and concentrations of infective juveniles (IJ). Third and fourth instars of B. odoriphaga were generally more susceptible to the nematodes than first and second instars and pupae. Pot experiments showed no differences in B. odoriphaga population reduction at 50 and 75 IJ/cm2 of different isolates; the tested isolates caused a 78–94 % reduction of the chive gnat population at an application rate of 75 IJ/cm2. In a field experiment, S. feltiae JY-90 generated the strongest pest suppression 14 days after EPN application, whereas after 28 days pest densities in the plots treated with S. feltiae JY-17 and S. hebeiense JY-82 were similar to those in plots treated with phoxim and yielded significant reductions of the B. odoriphaga populations. Our findings indicate that EPN may have good potential for use in the integrated management of B. odoriphaga populations in Chinese chive.  相似文献

We usually have only limited knowledge about the economic consequences of land-use decisions, thus they are uncertain. We analyze the implications of this uncertainty on conservation payments (CP) to preserve wildlife-friendly shade coffee production in southwest Ecuador, when conversion to maize is the most profitable alternative. Our objective is twofold: First, we analyze the consequences of applying Stochastic Dominance (SD) to derive CP, an approach making only minimal assumptions about the preferences of farmers. Second, we investigate the effects of land-use diversification to reduce CP by allowing for shade coffee on part of a landholding, and maize production on what remains. CP derived by SD turned out to be at least twice the amount calculated by an alternative method which maximizes a concave utility function—US$ 166 to US$ 294 ha?1 year?1 instead of US$ 86 ha?1 year?1. Given this result, we doubt that the assumptions underlying SD are reasonable for farmers, who are known to be risk-averse. Allowing for land-use diversification has a significant impact on CP. The optimal portfolio share of shade coffee is 27 % and for maize 73 % for moderately risk-averse farmers—without any CP. A larger share of shade coffee is preferable for strongly risk-averse farmers—51 and 49 % maize. The amount of CP necessary to encourage the expansion of shade coffee to 75 % is US$ 40 ha?1 year?1 (for moderately risk-averse) and US$ 19 ha?1 year?1 (for strongly risk-averse farmers). Stimulating diversification may thus help to significantly reduce CP necessary to preserve less profitable agroforestry options.  相似文献

Preemergence (PRE) herbicides negatively impacting turfgrass root growth may compromise macro- and micronutrient accumulation in foliar tissue. Research was conducted to determine the effects of indaziflam (35 and 52.5 g ha?1), prodiamine (0.84 kg ha?1), oxadiazon (3.36 kg ha?1), and isoxaben (1.12 kg ha?1) applications in hydroponic culture on hybrid bermudagrass [C. dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] tissue nutrient content. Prodiamine, indaziflam, and isoxaben reduced visual root mass relative to non-treated plants. Consequently, these herbicides reduced phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), and potassium (K) content in turf foliar tissue. Treatment with indaziflam reduced magnesium (Mg) and manganese (Mn) content in turf foliar tissue compared to non-treated plants. This response was not observed with prodiamine and could explain the significant foliar injury (>70%) observed with both rates of indaziflam. Data in the current study illustrate that PRE herbicide applications affect hybrid bermudagrass nutrient content. Future studies should evaluate foliar applications of Mg and Mn for either preventing or remediating leaf tissue injury following PRE herbicide application.  相似文献

During early development in vertebrates, Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is produced by the notochord and the floor plate. A ventrodorsal gradient of Shh directs ventrodorsal patterning of the neural tube. However, Shh is also required for the survival of neuroepithelial cells. We show that Patched (Ptc) induces apoptotic cell death unless its ligand Shh is present to block the signal. Moreover, the blockade of Ptc-induced cell death partly rescues the chick spinal cord defect provoked by Shh deprivation. Thus, the proapoptotic activity of unbound Ptc and the positive effect of Shh-bound Ptc on cell differentiation probably cooperate to achieve the appropriate spinal cord development.  相似文献

As the climate warmed at the end of the last glacial period, a rapid reversal in temperature, the Younger Dryas (YD) event, briefly returned much of the North Atlantic region to near full-glacial conditions. The event was associated with climate reversals in many other areas of the Northern Hemisphere and also with warming over and near Antarctica. However, the expression of the YD in the mid- to low latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere (and the southwest Pacific region in particular) is much more controversial. Here we show that the Waiho Loop advance of the Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand was not a YD event, as previously thought, and that the adjacent ocean warmed throughout the YD.  相似文献

Aggregation of rennet-altered casein micelles at low temperatures   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The rennet-induced coagulation of bovine milk at 10 degrees C was investigated. The rate of change of absorbance at 600 nm was higher in milk renneted at 30 degrees C than that at 10 degrees C. The amount of casein sedimented on centrifuging skim milk at 5000g for 1 h at 10 degrees C increased with time after renneting. The viscosity of milk at 10 degrees C at low shear rates did not change significantly until 10 h after rennet addition, but it increased markedly after 20 h. Smaller particles in milk at 10 degrees C disappeared slowly over 36 h after rennet addition and aggregated into larger particles. These results suggested that casein micelles in milk aggregate at low temperatures. Reasons for the slow aggregation of milk renneted at 10 degrees C were investigated by inhibiting chymosin activity by pepstatin A. It is likely that beta-casein, or its hydrolysis, plays a role in aggregation of rennet-altered casein micelles at low temperatures.  相似文献

The first objective of this paper was to analyze the potential role of allelic variability of carotenoid biosynthetic genes in the interspecific diversity in carotenoid composition of Citrus juices. The second objective was to determine the number of copies for each of these genes. Seven carotenoid biosynthetic genes were analyzed using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers. RFLP analyses were performed with the genomic DNA obtained from 25 Citrus genotypes using several restriction enzymes. cDNA fragments of Psy, Pds, Zds, Lcy-b, Lcy-e, Hy-b, and Zep genes labeled with [alpha-(32)P]dCTP were used as probes. For SSR analyses, two primer pairs amplifying two SSR sequences identified from expressed sequence tags (ESTs) of Lcy-b and Hy-b genes were designed. The number of copies of the seven genes ranged from one for Lcy-b to three for Zds. The genetic diversity revealed by RFLP and SSR profiles was in agreement with the genetic diversity obtained from neutral molecular markers. Genetic interpretation of RFLP and SSR profiles of four genes (Psy1, Pds1, Lcy-b, and Lcy-e1) enabled us to make inferences on the phylogenetic origin of alleles for the major commercial citrus species. Moreover, the results of our analyses suggest that the allelic diversity observed at the locus of both of lycopene cyclase genes, Lcy-b and Lcy-e1, is associated with interspecific diversity in carotenoid accumulation in Citrus. The interspecific differences in carotenoid contents previously reported to be associated with other key steps catalyzed by PSY, HY-b, and ZEP were not linked to specific alleles at the corresponding loci.  相似文献

The coagulant retained in cheese curd is a major contributor to proteolysis during ripening. The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of several milk-related factors and parameters during cheese manufacture on the retention of coagulant in cheese curd. The amount of coagulant retained in curd was determined by its activity on a synthetic heptapeptide (Pro-Thr-Glu-Phe-[NO2-Phe]-Arg-Leu) using reversed-phase HPLC. The retention of chymosin in cheese curd increased significantly when the pH of milk was reduced at rennet addition below pH 6.1, the pH at whey drainage below pH 5.7, or the average casein micelle size in milk and when the ionic strength of milk was increased. The casein content of milk and the quantity of chymosin added to milk had no significant effect on the retention of chymosin in curd; the quantity of coagulant bound per gram of casein remained unchanged.  相似文献

Forest fragmentation is a common disturbance affecting biological diversity, yet the impacts of fragmentation on many forest processes remain poorly understood. Forest restoration is likely to be more successful when it proceeds with an understanding of how native and exotic vertebrates utilize forest patches of different size. We used a system of forest fragments isolated by volcanic activity 153 years ago in Hawaii to examine how long-term fragmentation, as well as fragment size and structural features affect the richness of native and exotic bird species. The total number of bird species increased rapidly with forest fragment size, with most of the native species pool found in patches <3 ha. Smaller fragments were dominated by native bird species with several exotic bird species found only in the largest fragments, suggesting that exotic bird species in this landscape show greater area-sensitivity than native species. We used airborne scanning light detection and ranging (LiDAR) to assess whether fragment area was correlated with estimates of fragment vegetation volume as well as measures of tree height. Fragment area was highly correlated with vegetation volume, maximum tree height, and canopy height heterogeneity, and these variables were strong predictors of bird richness, demonstrating that remote sensing can provide key insights into the relationship between fragment structural attributes and biodiversity indicators. Overall, this work demonstrates the value of conserving small remnant mid-elevation forest patches for native birds in Hawaii. This work also provides insight into how newly created forest patches might be used by native and exotic bird species in Hawaii.  相似文献
