The effect of substituting fishmeal with poultry by‐product meal in diets for Totoaba macdonaldi juveniles

Four diets were formulated to evaluate the partial to total substitution of fishmeal with poultry by‐product meal (PBM) (0, 33, 67 and 100PBM) in diets for totoaba juveniles (Totoaba macdonaldi). Amino acid profiles from diets and fatty acid content in diets and muscle tissue were used to assess the fish performance using PBM as fishmeal replacement. Stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ15N) were measured in muscle and liver tissue to quantify the retention of each protein source. At the end of the experimental period, the fish fed the 67PBM diet had a significantly higher growth gain increase compared to the other treatments (almost 2000% over an 86 days period; TGC of 1.06). The total replacement of fishmeal with PBM led to low growth gain increase (ca. 220% over 72 days; TGC of 0.52) and increased mortality. Both fish performance and tissues' fatty acid composition suggest that the 100PBM diet was deficient in essential fatty acids. An isotope‐mixing model applied to isotope ratios of muscle and liver tissues of fish fed the 67PBM tissues indicated that PBM was retained into muscle and liver tissue in a higher proportion than its level of inclusion in the diet. We conclude that PBM is a good source of nutrients for totoaba juveniles when used in up to 67% fishmeal replacement level in diets containing 52% protein leading to adequate growth rate and survival. 相似文献

Kelp biomass availability for mass abalone cultivation remains a critical issue in Chile. The technical and economic feasibility of a commercial scale kelp farming activity has not been established. This study describes the production and economic results of a pilot scale unit installed in southern Chile. Our results show 25 kg m?1 of production over a 9‐month spring‐summer period, and 16.2 kg m?1 during the autumn‐winter period. These values indicate that a total biomass production of 41.3 kg (wet) ma?1 year?1 can be obtained by placing the culture lines at 4 m intervals. High quality animal food‐grade plants with a 9% protein content, over 5 m in length were harvested. Sensitivity analysis showed that by cultivating 30–50 ha with a market value of US$ 78 ton?1, a return on investment can be made after the first year. 相似文献

Numerous studies have analyzed the solid-set sprinkler irrigation system performance. However, the effect of field-boundaries irrigation has not been considered in the whole-field performance. The objectives of this study were (1) to characterize two different solutions to irrigate field boundaries (full-circle sprinkler equipped with a deflecting plate, DP, and partial-circle sprinklers, PC); (2) to calibrate and validate a ballistic model to adequately simulate these solutions; and (3) to analyze the two different designs (DP or PC) from a whole-field perspective. Two types of experiments were designed. The first was carried out with an isolated sprinkler under no windy conditions to estimate drop size distribution parameters. The second was performed in a solid-set sprinkler layout under windy conditions to calibrate and validate the ballistic model. The experimental design allows the comparison of both solutions under equal technical and meteorological conditions. Comparisons between designs (DP or PC) were established for a whole-field area in terms of irrigation performance and crop yield. From a technical point of view, PC sprinklers perform better than DP sprinklers. From an economical point of view, the shape and orientation of the plot and the legal requirements of the irrigation system design (minimum distance of the sprinkler line to the border) have an important effect on the optimal solution to irrigate field boundaries. 相似文献

Three insecticides, pyrethrins + piperonil butoxide (PBO), pymetrozine and triflumuron, were tested as potential alternatives
for controlling the Mediterranean fruit flyCeratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae). The compounds were administered to adult flies in the laboratory by different uptake
methods at the recommended rates currently used in fruit crops in Spain. Pyrethrins + PBO (80 + 320 ppm a.i.) exhibited a
comparable knock-down effect to malathion (1,500 ppm a.i.) in the laboratory, irrespective of the method of application used.
After these results were obtained, the number of concentrations tested was increased to carry out a dose-response analysis.
Pymetrozine (300 ppm a.i.) and triflumuron (150 ppm a.i.) did not kill adults at the concentrations tested. However, pymetrozine
diminished the fecundity, especially when adults were fed the insecticide; egg hatch was decreased by 59.3% compared with
controls. Further experiments showed that increased period of ingestion and higher concentrations had a clear effect in reducing
both fecundity and fertility. The possible use of pyrethrins + PBO and pymetrozine to reduce populations ofC. capitata is discussed.

Fast growing trees, in particular nitrogen fixing trees, are essential for the establishment of sustainable agroforestry practices
by resource-poor and/or environmentally conscious aarmers. An important selection factor for trees is therefore high N2 fixing capability. This study was conducted to examine biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in Leucaena leucocephala L., as affected by growth in pots containing 4, 10, 15 and 30 kg soil and when grown together with Eucalyptus camaldulensis. BNF was measured by the 15N isotope dilution technique. Leucaena and Eucalyptus were grown either sole (SL, SE) or in two mixtures (1:1 - L1:E1 and
1:2 - L1:E2) for a period of 6 months. Planting pattern influenced (P < 0.05) dry matter and N content of shoot and roots of Eucalyptus, as the sole planted trees gave the highest yield. Dry
matter, N content and total amount of N fixed by Leucaena significantly decreased with decreasing rooting volume. Also, the
smaller the rooting volume (or soil weight), the higher was the proportion (%) of N derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) by
leucaena. For each rooting volume, the sole or mixed planting pattern did not significantly influence either the proportion
(%) or amount of N fixed by leucaena. For these trees, therefore, rooting volume rather than cropping pattern influenced the

The use of macroalgae as an additional component in animal feeding has been studied. However, information on how it could influence muscle composition of fish body is scarce. This study evaluates four diets with different macroalgae inclusion levels (0%, 1.5%, 3% and 6%) to test the effect on body fatty acid composition of rainbow trout. Tanks with a volume of 600 L were stocked with 60.6 ± 7.9 g fish at a density of 45 individuals tank?1 and fed for 124 days. At the end of the experiment there were not significant differences (P<0.05) in muscle proximate composition among fish fed the different treatments. However, it was determined that inclusion of 3% and 6% of macroalgae meal resulted in a significant increase (P<0.05) of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in muscle. In summary, macroalgae meal in rainbow trout diets do not enhance the quantity of protein and lipid contents at muscle level but an addition of 3–6% might contribute to increase the level of PUFAs, specially EPA, DHA and LIN. Thus, use of macroalgae meal might help to increase lipid quality content in the final product due the beneficial effects of PUFAs for human health. 相似文献

A variety of microalgal species produce lipophilic toxins (LT) that are accumulated by filter-feeding bivalves. Their negative impacts on human health and shellfish exploitation are determined by toxic potential of the local strains and toxin biotransformations by exploited bivalve species. Chile has become, in a decade, the world’s major exporter of mussels (Mytilus chilensis) and scallops (Argopecten purpuratus) and has implemented toxin testing according to importing countries’ demands. Species of the Dinophysis acuminata complex and Protoceratium reticulatum are the most widespread and abundant LT producers in Chile. Dominant D. acuminata strains, notwithstanding, unlike most strains in Europe rich in okadaic acid (OA), produce only pectenotoxins, with no impact on human health. Dinophysis acuta, suspected to be the main cause of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning outbreaks, is found in the two southernmost regions of Chile, and has apparently shifted poleward. Mouse bioassay (MBA) is the official method to control shellfish safety for the national market. Positive results from mouse tests to mixtures of toxins and other compounds only toxic by intraperitoneal injection, including already deregulated toxins (PTXs), force unnecessary harvesting bans, and hinder progress in the identification of emerging toxins. Here, 50 years of LST events in Chile, and current knowledge of their sources, accumulation and effects, are reviewed. Improvements of monitoring practices are suggested, and strategies to face new challenges and answer the main questions are proposed. 相似文献
