Skin cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the world today in both humans and our pet population. Advances in molecular techniques are now affording us an opportunity to develop therapeutics targeted at specific cancer‐related cellular pathways. However, despite progress in conventional treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, and the new targeted therapies, some cancers, such as melanoma and cutaneous lymphoma, continue to cause significant mortality and morbidity. This short synopsis is not complete but is aimed at providing an insight into current advanced treatments and horizon therapies for cutaneous malignancies in dogs and cats with comparative aspects.  相似文献

This study aimed to identify herd-level risk factors associated with fecal shedding of Shiga toxin-encoding bacteria (STB) on dairy cattle farms in Minnesota, USA. After adjustment for farm size, risk factors included: use of total mixed ration (TMR) for lactating dairy cows [odds ratio (OR) = 3.0; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.8 to 5.1], no use of monensin for weaned calves (OR = 4.8, 95% CI: 2.5, 9.3), and no use of decoquinate for preweaned calves (OR = 2.2, 95% CI: 1.4, 3.6). Fecal shedding of STB was more common in small herds (< 100 cows, OR = 3.6, 95% CI: 2.1, 6.2) than in large herds (≥ 100 cows). Herd management factors related to cattle feeding practices were associated with fecal shedding of STB.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo provide reliable, effective immobilization for Weddell seals under extreme field conditions using an injectable ketamine/midazolam combination.Study designObservational study.AnimalsThirty adult Weddell seals (12 male, 18 female) in Erebus Bay, Antarctica, body mass (mean ± SD) 412 ± 47 kg, aged 9–27 years.MethodsSeals were immobilized with a target dose of 2 mg kg?1 ketamine hydrochloride and 0.1 mg kg?1 midazolam hydrochloride (IM), based on visually estimated body mass. When required, maintenance doses were administered at a target of 0.5 mg kg?1 ketamine hydrochloride and 0.025 mg kg?1 midazolam hydrochloride (IV).ResultsComplete immobilization was achieved in 33 of 40 injections (14 of which were repeat events on the same individual). Time to immobilization averaged 12 ± 4 minutes, with a duration of initial immobility of 38 ± 19 minutes. Total immobilization time varied by handling protocol, including condition assessment and muscle biopsy (Protocol 1, 60 ± 13 minutes), condition assessment and instrument attachment (Protocol 2, 154 ± 13 minutes), and condition assessment, muscle biopsy and instrument retrieval (Protocol 3, 48 ± 8 minutes). Overall, a total immobilization time of 114 ± 60 minutes was accomplished with 4 ± 4 maintenance doses, and an average recovery time of 36 ± 17 minutes. Most effects of the anesthetic combination were unrelated to mass, age, sex or total body fat. However, leaner seals had longer duration of initial immobility (% and kg total body fat) and recovery times (kg fat). Apnea events were uncommon and treated effectively with doxapram. No animals died.Conclusions and clinical relevanceReliable and effective field immobilization of Weddell seals was accomplished with a low dose of ketamine hydrochloride and midazolam hydrochloride, utilizing IM injection initially and IV maintenance methods.  相似文献

Two diploid accessions of wild oat, CIav6956 and CIav7233, were identified as carrying seedling resistance to oat crown rust (caused by Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae; Pca). Two vigorous interploidy F1 hybrids were generated from crosses involving the hexaploid oat cultivar Wintaroo and the diploid oat Avena strigosa Schreb. accession CIav6956. An additional interploidy F1 hybrid, designated “F1-Aa1”, was produced from a cross of Wintaroo and the diploid oat accession CIav7233. All three hybrids were more vigorous and taller than the cultivated parent Wintaroo. The three F1 hybrids contained full chromosome complements from both parents (2n = 4x = 28), but no seeds were obtained when the three F1 hybrids were selfed. Meiotic analyses of the hybrids indicated that they exhibited a high degree of inter-genome and intra-genome pairing. Trivalent configurations were detected in 95–96% of meiotic cells and a minimum of three bivalents was present in all cells. An average chiasma frequency of 7.2–7.9 per cell was observed for the three F1 hybrids. A fourth F1 hybrid was subsequently generated from a cross between the diploid oat accession CIav7233 and Wintaroo. One octaploid (2n = 8x = 56) was generated from this hybrid and progeny were resistant to two Pca races. The chromosome number of the octaploid progeny varied between 51 and 54 chromosomes. Development of a chromosome addition line(s) with the crown rust resistance should be possible from these partial-octaploids.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to test the efficacy of different doses of estradiol cypionate (ECP) and domperidone for inducing ovulation in seasonally anovulatory (January; Experiments 1 and 2) and transitional period (March; Experiment 3) mares. In the first two experiments, mares in Kentucky and Louisiana were administered domperidone (3 g in biodegradable particles) alone or after pretreatment with 100 or 150 mg of ECP; another group received ECP, domperidone, and progesterone, and a fifth group received ECP and progesterone only (the latter two in Kentucky). Control mares in both states received no treatment. The proportion of mares ovulating within 35 days (for mares treated in January) was greater (P = .0002) for those receiving any combination of ECP plus domperidone relative to mares not receiving the combined treatment. Addition of progesterone to ECP plus domperidone did not enhance (P = .7) the response relative to the combination alone; domperidone by itself, or ECP plus progesterone, did not alter the response relative to controls (P > .24). Experiment 3 was conducted in Louisiana as a 2 × 3 factorial, with two doses of domperidone (1.5 or 3 g) and three doses of ECP (0, 75, or 150 mg). There was no main effect of domperidone or ECP dose; a greater proportion (P = .055) of mares receiving any combination of ECP plus domperidone ovulated in 21 days compared with those receiving no ECP. In conclusion, pretreatment with ECP before injection of domperidone 10 days later can be used to increase the proportion of mares ovulating early in the year; within the limits of the present experiments, there appears to be no difference in doses of ECP of 75, 100, or 150 mg, and no difference in doses of domperidone of 1.5 or 3 g.  相似文献

The nucleus accumbens is a key mediator of cocaine reward, but the distinct roles of the two subpopulations of nucleus accumbens projection neurons, those expressing dopamine D1 versus D2 receptors, are poorly understood. We show that deletion of TrkB, the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) receptor, selectively from D1+ or D2+ neurons oppositely affects cocaine reward. Because loss of TrkB in D2+ neurons increases their neuronal excitability, we next used optogenetic tools to control selectively the firing rate of D1+ and D2+ nucleus accumbens neurons and studied consequent effects on cocaine reward. Activation of D2+ neurons, mimicking the loss of TrkB, suppresses cocaine reward, with opposite effects induced by activation of D1+ neurons. These results provide insight into the molecular control of D1+ and D2+ neuronal activity as well as the circuit-level contribution of these cell types to cocaine reward.  相似文献

This study evaluates the inclusion of lycopene in the commercial diet for Nile Tilapia exposured to a stressor. For 60 days, fish diet was supplemented with lycopene (600 mg kg?1 diet) and at the end, subjected to confinement for 90 min. Zootechnical parameters (weight gain, specific growth rate and intake), hormonal (cortisol level), biochemical {enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation level [thiobarbituric acid (TBARS)]} and physical (instrumental colour) parameters were also evaluated. Supplementation with lycopene did not alter zootechnical parameters. In unconfined fish, catalase (CAT) activity was reduced in the white muscle of fish fed with lycopene; however, in red muscle, it was not altered. In fish under confinement, plasma cortisol increased as well as CAT, glutathione reductase (GR) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in both muscles. Lipid peroxidation of the fillet also displayed higher values. However, the lycopene supplementation abolished the effects of confinement available through cortisol levels, remaining unchanged in the above parameters, activity of CAT, GR and LDH in both muscles and TBARS content of the fillet; in addition, it did not induce alteration of fillet coloration. Inclusion of lycopene in commercial feed reduces the impact of confinement and does not alter the zootechnical parameters; additionally, no modification of the fillet colour from juvenile Nile tilapia was observed.  相似文献

A fast generation cycling system (FGCS) was developed in oat and triticale, allowing the production of pure line populations of the crops within 1‐year timeframe. Twelve oat and 12 triticale cultivars were tested using the FGCS, and most of them completed a generation cycle within 48–61 days under the system achieving up to seven generations a year. This system involves growing plants under stressed conditions to promote reproduction and in vitro culture of immature embryos bypassing full seed maturation. The developed system could be widely adopted in breeding and genetic studies of crops for producing desired segregating pure line populations, which could significantly shorten the breeding cycles.  相似文献
