Quarks with unit charge: a search for anomalous hydrogen

Quarks of charge +1 and other anomalous hydrogen have been sought by using the 88-inch cyclotron at Berkeley as a high-energy mass spectrometer, with natural hydrogen and deuterium as the sources of ions. No quarks were observed, and limits were placed on their ratio to protons on the earth that vary from < 2 x 10(-19)for high masses (3 to 8.2 atomic mass units) to 10(-13) for the lowest masses (< (1/3) atomic mass unit).     

Sharpening stellar images

Atmospherically induced phase perturbations have for years limited the resolution of large optical astronomical telescopes. A prototype telescope system with six movable elements has successfully corrected these phase perturbations. This use of real-time image sharpening has restored stellar images to the diffraction limit (in one dimension) for a 30-centimeter telescope. The double-star image presented indicates that the bulk of the atmospherically induced wave-front phase change occurred within 2 kilometers of the telescope. This implies that, at least for conditions similar to those of our measurement, real-time correction can be accomplished simultaneously for a region at least several arc seconds in angular size. With the present apparatus the technique should be practical for objects as dim as fifth magnitude, and with improvements the technique holds the promise of active image restoration for objects as dim as ninth magnitude.     

Horse milking industry in The Netherlands and Flanders

The horse milking industry is expanding in The Netherlands and Flanders. Horse milk has become popular due to its (supposed) health-enhancing properties. A horse-milking farm is not a common client for the Dutch veterinarian. When giving advice in this circumstance it should be recognised that these horses are production animals and that their milk is for human consumption. A review of the literature is given together with the results of an extensive enquiry amongst 13 horse-milking farms in The Netherlands and Flanders.     

Comparison of Diclofenac Diethylamine Permeation Across Horse Skin from Five Commercial Medical Human Formulations

The aim of this study was to compare the penetration of diclofenac through horse skin in vitro and its efficacy in vivo when applied from five, commercially available, human medical formulations containing 1.16% diclofenac diethylamine. The rate of transdermal penetration of diclofenac varied between formulations. Also, estimated steady-state flux (Jss) was significantly different from that reported for human and rat skin. All the tested formulations produced a very weak and short-lasting antiedematous effect.     

Metastatic calcinosis (including calcinosis cutis) in a young dog with multiple urinary tract abnormalities

Metastatic calcinosis associated with chronic renal failure and multiple urinary tract abnormalities was diagnosed in a 6-month-old Brittany spaniel that was presented with calcinosis cutis. This case report highlights the importance of skin as an indicator of systemic disease. The aetiopathogenesis of the four main types of tissue calcification is defined and discussed with an emphasis on metastatic calcinosis.     

On the variability of amorphous materials in andosols and their relationships to irreversible drying and P-retention

The amorphous components of Andosol samples from Costa Rica, Japan, New Zealand and Rwanda were examined for chemical and mineralogical variability by determining 0.5 N NaOH extractable Si and Al, CEC delta value, content of co-precipitated Si-Al gels (allophane sensu stricto) and by DTA. This analytical information was compared with magnitude of P-retention and the physical property of irreversible drying. The former showed no significant relationship except for a tendency of highly siliceous members of the soils studied to have less P-retention. Irreversible drying appears to be strongly related to presence of discrete phases of Si and Al gels. The agricultural significance of the latter and the need for emphasizing in classification systems the Si/Al ratios of such amorphous materials for differentiating among Andosols have been stressed. A suitable differential solubility test for quantifying amorphous compounds of real significance is still not available.     

Stomatal conductance,growth and root signaling in Betula pendula seedlings subjected to partial soil drying

Seedlings of Betula pendula Roth were grown with their root systems separated between two soil compartments. Four treatments were imposed: (i) adequate irrigation in both compartments (WW, controls); (ii) adequate irrigation in one compartment and drought in the other compartment (WD); (iii) drought in both compartments (DD); and (iv) half of the root system severed and the remainder kept well-watered (root excision, RE). Predawn leaf water potential, stomatal conductance, soil-to-leaf specific hydraulic conductance, and root and leaf growth decreased in DD-treated seedlings, which also displayed severe leaf shedding (30% loss in leaf area). The DD treatment also resulted in increased concentrations of abscisic acid (ABA) and its glucose ester in the xylem sap of roots and shoots compared to concentrations in control seedlings (about 200 versus 20 nM). Despite the difference in xylem sap concentrations, total ABA flux to the shoots was similar in the two treatments (1-2 pmol ABA m(-2) leaf area s(-1)) as a result of reduced transpiration in the DD-treated seedlings. Compared with root growth in control plants, root growth increased in the RE-treated plants and decreased in the drying compartment of the WD treatment; however, the RE and WD treatments only slightly reduced leaf expansion, and had no detectable effects on shoot water relations or ABA concentrations of the root and shoot xylem sap. We conclude that short-term soil water depletion affecting only 50% of the root system does not cause a measurable stress response in birch shoots, despite root growth cessation in the fraction of drying soil.     

Characterization of herpesvirus of turkeys. Replication using recombinant DNA

DNA has been isolated from herpesvirus of turkeys (HVT) virions and used to construct a partial gene library in pBR-322. The recombinants have been characterized and shown to contain HVT DNA inserts. A representative recombinant containing a 5.9-kilobase HindIII fragment was used as a probe to quantitate the yields of HVT DNA in vitro and to follow the kinetics of viral DNA replication. The data shown that in chicken fibroblasts, viral DNA synthesis initiates by about 12-14 hr postinfection and that the yield of progeny virus plateaus at 28-30 hr postinfection. Based upon quantitative hybridization to cloned DNA probes, we estimate that approximately 2000 HVT genomes are produced per infected cell in vitro; however, in vivo in persistently infected turkeys, the number of viral genomes was below the level of detection by Southern blotting.
