We studied the change in the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal gland (HPA) axis upon adding prior toluene inhalation to our previous formaldehyde inhalation experiments to determine whether short term exposure to relatively high levels of toluene triggers multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). Data come from immunocytochemical, morphometrical and RT-PCR measurements. Four groups of adult female mice were exposed to differing concentrations (0, 80, 400, and 2,000 ppb) of formaldehyde for 16 hr/day, 5 days/week for twelve weeks, after the mice were exposed intranasally to 500 ppm toluene per mouse for 6 hr/day, for 3 days. We found that the number of corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH)-immunoreactive (ir) neurons was up-regulated according to the amount of formaldehyde as well as inhalation of formaldehyde alone in our previous experiment. The proportion of adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH)-ir cells increased according to the formaldehyde concentration, though there was no significant difference between the 400 and 2,000 groups. The number of ACTH-ir cells was higher in the 400 group than in the other groups (0, 80, and 2,000). Expression of ACTH-mRNA was also up-regulated according to the quantity of formaldehyde. The sinusoid in the anterior pituitary showed more dilatation in the 400 and 2,000 groups than in the control group, especially in the 2,000 group. We propose that exposure to toluene prior to inhalation of formaldehyde has no effect on the HPA axis and as a trigger of MCS, although greater sinusoid dilatation was found in the anterior pituitary gland at higher concentrations of formaldehyde. 相似文献

Climate change is an underlying cause of many extreme events such as enormous cyclones and erratic torrential rains. These phenomena threaten farmers in coastal regions of Myanmar. Self-insurance through means such as crop diversification is insufficient for sustainable farm management. Weather index insurance (WII) is receiving much attention because of its low management costs. An optimum WII contract for flood damage using rainfall as the index has been proposed for rice farmers in coastal regions. According to the model, an insurance payment demand function is derived by solving the expected utility maximization problem. The utility function of the contract is specified as constant relative risk aversion type. The production function is specified as Cobb–Douglas type. By substituting real average data of rice production of farmers into this function, the optimum insurance payment and premium are obtained. Changes in insurance compensation by payments according to an increase in the price of rice, rainfall, and degree of risk aversion are investigated. Results suggest that if an average farmer pays around 41.5 US dollars per year, then farm management will be optimally stabilized under the flood risk.

The supply of water is affected by climate changes. In addition, high economic growth in the lower Mekong River countries including two large rice exporters is expected to reduce the per capita consumption of rice as incomes grow. Consequently, the need exist to investigate changes in supply and demand using econometric models of rice markets in the countries, where water supplies are expected to change. The objective of this research is to clarify impacts of water supply changes on rice producers and consumers using supply and demand models of rice considering changes in the water supply to aid in producing agricultural policies and plans. The following two simulations were conducted in this assessment: (a) baseline and (b) CC_B2. The simulation of the baseline includes the assumption that the evapotranspiration (ET) of each province after 2000 is the average quantity of ET from 1995 to 1999. The simulation of the CC_B2 includes the assumptions that ET of each province after 2010 accords with the IPCC socioeconomic scenario B2. The simulation results suggest that climate change will depress wet season rice production in Cambodia and Mekong River Delta (MRD) region in Vietnam, and that of dry season rice in the MRD region in Vietnam and northeastern region (Isan) Thailand. The simulation results also indicate that climate change will increase farm prices of rice in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand. The results suggest that climate changes will weigh on the livelihood of rice consumers, especially those of poor rural populations.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on growth performance, carcass chemical composition and fatty acid profile of lambari (Astyanax altiparanae). A completely randomized experimental design with six treatments, diets with graded levels of CLA (0.0, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0 and 25.0 g kg?1) and five repetitions. Fish (n = 570; weight: 1.58 ± 0.23 g) were distributed into 30 (70‐L) aquaria and fed the experimental diets during 90 days. No effects of dietary supplementation with CLA on fish performance and carcass chemical composition were observed. CLA influenced carcass fatty acid profile, a positive relationship was found for 16:1 n‐9, 18:1 n‐9, 18:2(cis‐9, trans‐11), 18:2(trans‐10, cis‐12) and 20:1 n‐9, and a negative relationship was found for 15:1 n‐7, 16:0, 16:1 n‐5, 18:2 n‐6, 18:3 n‐3, 20:5 n‐3 and 22:4 n‐6. Total CLA and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) linearly increased with the increase in dietary CLA, while saturated fatty acids (SFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of n‐6 and n‐3 series linearly decreased. Dietary CLA can be incorporated into the lambari (A. altiparanae) muscle, and the fish can be used as functional foods, because CLA is related to the prevention of various diseases in humans. 相似文献
We report a case of systemic metastasis of malignant melanoma in a mini-Rex (Oryctolagus cuniculus). The animal presented with lameness of the right hind limb, swelling of popliteal lymph node, and a black mass on the first digit. Paralysis of hindlimbs and forelimbs, dysuria, and dysphagia progressed over time, and the rabbit died on day 35 from the first visit. At necropsy, many black lesions were observed in multiple organs including the marrow of most bones. Histopathologically, the tumor cells had highly atypical nuclei of various sizes and an abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, and some cells contained melanin granules. These cells were positive for PNL2 and S-100, melanoma markers, by immunohistochemistry. This is the first report of malignant melanoma in a mini-Rex with severe malignancy and systemic metastasis including the bone marrow. 相似文献
