Context

Multi-objective management can mitigate conflicts among land-use objectives. However, the effectiveness of a multi-objective solution depends on the spatial scale at which land-use is optimized. This is because the ecological variation within the planning region influences the potential for site-specific prioritization according to the different objectives.

Objectives

We optimized the allocation of forest management strategies to maximize the joint production of two conflicting objectives, timber production and carbon storage, at increasing spatial scales. We examined the impacts of the extent of the planning region on the severity of the conflict, the potential for its mitigation, and the strategies that were identified as optimal.

Methods

Using forecasted data from a forest simulator, we constructed Pareto frontiers optimizing the joint provision of the objectives in production forests in Finland. Optimization was conducted within increasing hierarchical spatial scales and outcomes were compared in terms of the severity of the conflict and the solution to mitigate it.

Results

The trade-offs between timber production and carbon storage appeared less severe and could be mitigated more effectively the larger the planning regions were, but the improvements became minor beyond the scale of ‘large forest holding’. The results thus indicate that this scale, approximately 100 stands or 200 ha, is large enough to effectively mitigate the conflict between timber production and carbon storage.

Conclusions

Management planning over relatively small forest areas (200 ha) can mitigate ecosystem service trade-offs effectively. Thus the effective use of multi-objective optimization tools may be feasible even in small-scale forestry.

The use of multitemporal LiDAR data in forest-monitoring applications has been so far largely unexplored. In this work, we aimed to develop and test a simple method for the detection of snow-induced canopy changes by employing bitemporal LiDAR data acquired in 2006–2010. Our study area was located in southern Finland (62°N, 24°E), where snow-induced damage occurred in 10 permanent Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris)-dominated plots in winter 2009–2010. For the detection of snow-damaged crowns, we developed a ?CHM method by contrasting bitemporal LiDAR canopy height models (CHMs) and analyzing the resulting difference image, using binary image operations to extract the damaged crowns. Furthermore, we examined the structural and spatial factors that could explain snow damage at the individual tree level. The ?CHM method developed is based on two threshold parameters, i.e., the required height difference in the contrasted CHMs and the minimum plausible area of damage. When testing the performance of ?CHM method, we found that the plot-level omission error rates were 19–75%, while the commission error rates were 0–21%. Furthermore, the relative estimation accuracy of the damaged crown projection area (DCPA) ranged from ?16.4 to 5.4%. The observed damage could be explained at tree level by stem tapering, relative tree size, and local stand density. To conclude, ?CHM method developed constitutes a potential tool for the monitoring of structural canopy changes in the dominant tree layer if dense multitemporal LiDAR data are available.  相似文献

The occurrence and pH dependence (pHe 7–8) of the adrenergic red cell responses of two salmonids, trout and whitefish, and a percinid, pikeperch were studied. These are all species that live in well-oxygenated waters. The responses were compared to those of carp, which tolerates oxygen-deficient waters.The adrenergic responses of trout and whitefish red cells were pronounced. In these species red cell swelling, the accumulation of sodium and chloride in the cell, and the increase in red cell oxygen content at atmospheric oxygen tension were maximal at pH 7.3. In contrast, pikeperch red cells responded to -adrenergic stimulation only at extracellular pH 7.1. In carp, the adrenergic response, occurring below extracellular pH 7.5, was small as compared to the two salmonids. In each case the onset of the adrenergic response coincided with the onset of the Root effect.The differences in the adrenergic responses between the two salmonids and pikeperch suggest that the occurrence of the adrenergic response is not directly related to the environmental oxygen requirements of the species, but may be linked to the activity pattern.  相似文献

Composting municipal wastewater sludge may generate composting wastewater (acid washer water and tunnel wastewater) with high ammonium–nitrogen (NH4–N) concentration; this kind of wastewater is usually generated in a rather small daily amount. A procedure of air stripping with catalytic oxidation was developed and tested with pilot-scale and full-scale units for synthetic disposal of the high NH4–N wastewaters from composting facilities. In air stripping, around 90% NH4–N removal efficiency was reliably achieved with a maximum of 98%. A model to describe the stripping process efficiency was constructed, which can be used for process optimization. After catalytic oxidation, the concentrations in the outlet gas were acceptable for NH3, NOX, NO2, and N2O, but the NH3 and N2O concentrations limited the feasible loading range. The treatment costs were estimated in detail. The results indicate that air stripping with the catalytic oxidation process can be applied for wastewater treatment in composting facilities.  相似文献

Black currants (Ribes nigrum L.) contain a diverse range of phenolics and possess a high antioxidant activity, which makes them an interesting target for the functional food industry. In this study, phenolic profiles of organically and conventionally grown black currant fruits, collected from commercial farms within a climatically similar area, were compared. Compounds were identified using UV/vis and mass spectroscopy techniques and quantified with high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with UV/vis detection. Several different conjugates of hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, and anthocyanins were quantified. Statistically significant differences between farms were found for almost all compounds. Differences between the highest and the lowest measured values of major phenolic compounds of different phenolic classes ranged from 24 to 77%. Principal component analysis quite effectively separated farms from each other but did not cluster them according to cultivation technique. Thus, it was concluded that the biochemical quality of organically grown black currant fruits does not differ from those grown conventionally.  相似文献

Species diversity of polypores (Basidiomycetes) was compared between woodland key habitats (WKHs) and old-growth forest controls in boreal forests in eastern Finland. WKHs, which were set aside for their rich vascular plant flora, turned out not to be hot spots for the species richness of polypores, nor did their species composition represent the overall species richness of the area. Differences in the total volume of CWD, tree species composition and several CWD qualities were reflected as differences in the species assemblages between the groups. The results indicated that only a fraction of the overall polypore diversity was represented in the small-size WKHs (<0.5 ha), and the protection of red-listed and indicator polypores in WKHs was random. However, rare old-growth forest indicators were found even in small-size WKHs, if the CWD quality was appropriate for them. Nevertheless, our study does not answer the question whether the occurrences of rare and red-listed species will survive in small-size WKHs surrounded by altered environments such as clear-cuts, because our study sites were located in undisturbed areas. The results stress the importance to protect typical old-growth forest patches with high CWD volume and quality in boreal forests.  相似文献

Background: The occurrence of aspen trees increases the conservation value of mature conifer dominated forests.Aspens typically occur as scattered individuals among major tree species, and therefore the inventory of aspens is challenging.Methods: We characterized aspen populations in a boreal nature reserve using diameter distribution, spatial pattern, and forest attributes: volume, number of aspens, number of large aspen stems and basal area median diameter. The data were collected from three separate forest stands in Koli National Park, eastern Finland. At each site, we measured breast height diameter and coordinates of each aspen. The comparison of inventory methods of aspens within the three stands was based on simulations with mapped field data. We mimicked stand level inventory by locating varying numbers of fixed area circular plots both systematically and randomly within the stands. Additionally, we also tested if the use of airborne laser scanning(ALS) data as auxiliary information would improve the accuracy of the stand level inventory by applying the probability proportional to size sampling to assist the selection of field plot locations.Results: The results showed that aspens were always clustered, and the diameter distributions indicated different stand structures in the three investigated forest stands. The reliability of the volume and number of large aspen trees varied from relative root mean square error figures above 50% with fewer sample plots(5–10) to values of25%–50% with 10 or more sample plots. Stand level inventory estimates were also able to detect spatial pattern and the shape of the diameter distribution. In addition, ALS-based auxiliary information could be useful in guiding the inventories, but caution should be used when applying the ALS-supported inventory technique.Conclusions: This study characterized European aspen populations for the purposes of monitoring and management of boreal conservation areas. Our results suggest that if the number of sample plots is adequate,i.e. 10 or more stand level inventory will provide accurate enough forest attributes estimates in conservation areas(minimum accuracy requirement of RMSE% is 20%–50%). Even for the more ecologically valuable attributes, such as diameter distribution, spatial pattern and large aspens, the estimates are acceptable for conservation purposes.  相似文献

Knowledge of ingredients assimilation and biomass contribution to recipient fish is important in feed formulation. The stable isotopes of 13C and 15N were used to investigate the assimilation and biomass contribution of bambaranut, Voandzeia subterranea, meal (BNM), corn, Zea mays, meal (CM) and fish meal (FM), in FM substituted diets of first feeding African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, during a 30‐d experiment. The catfish larvae were stocked at 40 fish/15 L three replicate glass aquaria. Larvae were fed with experimental diets varying FM, BNM, and CM. Proportions of FM : BNM : CM in the experimental diets were: feed 1 (F1) 60:20:20; feed 2 (F2) 40:40:20; feed 3 (F3) 20:60:20; and feed 4 (F4) 20:20:60. Feeds and larval stable isotopes of δ13C and δ15N were analyzed. Larval specific growth rates (SGRs) were high, enhancing incorporation of dietary δ13C and δ15N. The SGR was highest for catfish fed F1 and F2 but significantly lower for those on F3 and F4. Results of δ13C and δ15N analyses showed that the biomass contribution from FM was similar to BNM, which were better than CM at equal inclusion levels. The nitrogen contribution per ingredient to larval somatic crude protein was increasing with increases in ingredient inclusion and assimilation. Stable isotope analysis is useful for analyzing assimilation and utilization of nutrients.  相似文献
