This study quantified the fate of new carbon (C) in four crop sequences (lentil–wheat, canola–wheat, pea–wheat, and continuous wheat). Lentil–wheat and continuous wheat were grown in intact soil cores from a Brown Chernozem (BCz) and canola–wheat, pea–wheat, and continuous wheat in cores from a Dark Brown Chernozem (DBCz). In the first growing cycle, plants were pulse-labeled with 13C-CO2. Soil 13C pools were measured once after the labeled growing cycle to quantify root biomass contribution to soil organic matter (SOM) in a single cycle and again after a second growing cycle to quantify the fate of labeled root and shoot residues. 13C was quantified in four SOM fractions: very light (VLF), light (LF), heavy (HF), and water extractable organic matter (WEOM). For BCz lentil, BCz wheat, DBCz canola, DBCz pea, and DBCz wheat in the labeling year, root-derived C estimates were 838, 572, 512, 397, and 418 mg of C per kg soil, respectively. At the end of the second growing cycle, decreases in root-derived C were greater in the VLF, which lost 62 to 95 % of its labeled 13C, than the LF (lost 21 to 56 %) or HF (lost 20 to 47 %). Root-derived C in WEOM increased 38 to 319 %. On DBCz, even though wheat and pea produced less aboveground biomass than canola, they generated similar amounts of SOC by fraction indicating that their residues were more efficiently stabilized into the soil than canola residues. Combining 13C repeat-pulse labeling and SOM fractionation methods allowed new insights into C dynamics under different crop sequences and soil types. This combination of methods has great potential to improve our understanding of soil fertility and SOM stabilization.  相似文献

Objective To determine the electrocardiographic and cardiopulmonary effects of IM administration of romifidine with and without prior administration of glycopyrrolate in conscious dogs. Study design Prospective randomized study. Animals Twelve healthy, adult beagles. Materials and methods Dogs were assigned at random to each of three treatments with glycopyrrolate (six dogs), and to each of three treatments without glycopyrrolate (six dogs). Baseline data were recorded, and saline solution or glycopyrrolate (10 µg kg–1) was given IM. After 15 minutes, saline solution (control) or romifidine (20 or 40 µg kg–1) was given IM. An ECG, heart rate (HR), systemic blood pressures, and respiratory rate (RR) were recorded before and 2.5, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 and 120 minutes after romifidine administration. Rectal temperature (RT), pH, PaCO2, PaO2, hematocrit and plasma protein were determined before and 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes after romifidine administration. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance for repeated measures and Tukey multiple comparison tests. Results Without glycopyrrolate, HR (beats minute–1) decreased to minimum values (mean ± SD) of 52 ± 7 and 49 ± 12 (control 89 ± 20) 45 minutes after administration of romifidine at doses of 20 and 40 µg kg–1, respectively. Sinus bradycardia (HR < 60 beats minute–1), which persisted for up to 120 minutes, was observed in five of six and six of six dogs given romifidine at doses of 20 and 40 µg kg–1, respectively. With glycopyrrolate, decreases in HR were prevented and mean arterial pressure (mm Hg) increased to maximum values of 139 ± 25 and 173 ± 17 (control 113 ± 11) 30 minutes after administration of romifidine at doses of 20 and 40 µg kg–1, respectively. With and without glycopyrrolate, RR did not change appreciably, RT decreased, and pH, PaCO2, PaO2, hematocrit and plasma protein did not change after administration of romifidine. Conclusions and clinical relevance In healthy conscious beagles, IM administration of romifidine at doses of 20 and 40 µg kg–1 causes sinus bradycardia which persists for up to 120 minutes. Administration of glycopyrrolate 15 minutes before administration of romifidine, prevents sinus bradycardia and induces moderate increases in arterial pressure.  相似文献

Like all other living organisms, microorganisms depend on nutrients, carbon and energy. Since microorganisms are central to most soil processes, the sustainable management of agricultural soils may need to consider the impact of soil fertility management on the soil microbial community. We tested the hypothesis that different rates of N and P fertilizers, and cropping frequency (modifying C input to soil) influence the size, structure and physiological condition of soil microbial populations residing in the plough layer (top 7.5 cm). For this study, we used a 37-yr old long-term wheat-based rotation experiment located in the semiarid Brown soil zone of Saskatchewan. The experiment included (1) four input treatments: (i) no N or (ii) no P fertilizer application to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in fallow-wheat-wheat (F-W-W) rotations, and (iii) recommended rates of both N and P fertilizer applied to fallow-wheat (F-W) and (iv) to F-W-W; (2) two rotation phases: fallow and wheat-after-fallow; and (3) four sampling times: 8 June, 4 July, 5 August and 16 September 2003. Increased partitioning into storage lipids of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) biomarker 16:1ω5 (P=0.04), suggested the accumulation of storage material under low soil N availability. Discriminant analysis detected modifications in soil microbial community structure due to cropping frequency (P=0.001) and sampling time, the effect of which was different in the fallow (P<0.0001) and wheat-after-fallow (P<0.0001) phases of the rotations. Correlation analysis of soil variables conducted in plots growing wheat revealed a dual effect of plants, which stimulated active soil microbial biomass (SMB), possibly through the release of soluble extractable C (Csol−ext) in soil and, at the same time, SMB competed with wheat for soil water and N. The 37 y of different nutrient input treatments had no effect upon the active soil microbial biomass according to PLFA measurements, despite changes in soil resource-related variables (soil water potential, soil PO4-P and NO3-N fluxes, and Csol−ext concentrations) (P?0.003). The biomass of each of three microbial populations monitored was lowest on 4 July, when the amounts of the soil resources monitored were average, and greatest on 5 August, when N, P and soil moisture availability was lowest. The temporal effect on the biomass of microbial populations seemed unrelated to variation in nutrient or water availability. We conclude that the soil microbial community is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions. We propose therefore that the occurrence of sudden and dramatic events, such as a heavy rainfall on a dry soil, is the most important determinant of seasonal variation in active soil microbial biomass.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess socio-economic indicators, nutritional status and living conditions of farm workers and their families, with the purpose to develop research and intervention programmes aimed at enhancing nutritional status and quality of life. DESIGN AND SETTING: Three farm schools in two districts of the North-West Province and farming communities were selected. Anthropometrical measurements, structured face-to-face questionnaires and focus group discussions were carried out in 2002 and 2003 by a multidisciplinary research team. RESULTS: Access to electricity, water and sanitation, as well as monthly food rations or subsidies, vary and depend on farm owners. The majority of adults have education below or up to grade four, farm schools provide only up to grade seven. Distance to farm schools and intra-household issues hamper children's attendance and performance at school. Household food security is compromised due to a lack of financial resources, infrastructure and also household resource allocation. This impacts negatively especially on children, with half of them being underweight, stunted or wasted. Employment is usually linked to men, while most women have access to casual jobs only. Insecurity of residence and the perceived disempowered position towards farm owners add to feelings of hopelessness and stress. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: This study highlights destitute living conditions of farm worker families. Apart from structural and financial constraints, paternalistic structures of the past might also hamper development. Based on these findings, follow-up research projects and in-depth investigations into underlying social issues with regard to nutrition insecurity and livelihoods of farm workers were initiated.  相似文献

Managing perioperative pain effectively is one the most important tasks that clinical veterinarians perform on a daily basis. The purpose of this article is to provide veterinarians with a basic understanding of the pathophysiology of perioperative pain and a working knowledge of the principles of effective therapy. First, the concepts of nociception, inflammatory pain, and neural plasticity are introduced. Second, the nociceptive and antinociceptive pathways that mediate normal physiological pain are described. Next, neural plasticity and the development of pathological pain are explained. And last, the concepts of preemptive, multimodal, and mechanism-based therapy are discussed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the pharmacokinetics and toxic effects associated with IV administration of lithium chloride (LiCl) to conscious healthy horses. ANIMALS: 6 healthy Standardbred horses. PROCEDURE: Twenty 3-mmol boluses of LiCl (0.15 mmol/L) were injected IV at 3-minute intervals (total dose, 60 mmol) during a 1-hour period. Blood samples for measurement of serum lithium concentrations were collected before injection and up to 24 hours after injection. Behavioral and systemic toxic effects of LiCl were also assessed. RESULTS: Lithium elimination could best be described by a 3-compartment model for 5 of the 6 horses. Mean peak serum concentration was 0.561 mmol/L (range, 0.529 to 0.613 mmol/L), with actual measured mean serum value of 0.575 mmol/L (range, 0.52 to 0.67 mmol/L) at 2.5 minutes after administration of the last bolus. Half-life was 43.5 hours (range, 32 to 84 hours), and after 24 hours, mean serum lithium concentration was 0.13+/-0.05 mmol/L (range, 0.07 to 0.21 mmol/L). The 60-mmol dose of LiCl did not produce significant differences in any measured hematologic or biochemical variables, gastrointestinal motility, or ECG variables evaluated during the study period. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Distribution of lithium best fit a 3-compartment model, and clearance of the electrolyte was slow. Healthy horses remained unaffected by LiCl at doses that exceeded those required for determination of cardiac output. Peak serum concentrations were less than steady-state serum concentrations that reportedly cause toxic effects in other species.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate sedative effects of IM administration of a low dose of romifidine in dogs. ANIMALS: 13 healthy adult Beagles. PROCEDURE: Physiologic saline solution (0.2 ml), 0.1 % romifidine (10, 20, or 40 microg/kg), or 10% xylazine (1 mg/kg) was given IM in a crossover study design. Heart rate, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, hemoglobin saturation, and scores for sedation, muscle relaxation, posture, auditory response, and positioning response were recorded before and at regular intervals for up to 240 minutes after drug administration. RESULTS: Scores for sedation, muscle relaxation, posture, auditory response, and positioning response increased in a dose-dependent manner after romifidine administration. Sedation induced by the highest dose of romifidine (40 microg/kg) was comparable to that induced by xylazine (1 mg/kg). Heart rate, respiratory rate, and rectal temperature decreased in a dose-dependent manner after romifidine administration, but hemoglobin saturation did not change. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Romifidine (10, 20, or 40 microg/kg, IM) is an effective sedative in dogs, but causes a decrease in heart rate, respiratory rate, and rectal temperature.  相似文献
