Marine protected areas (MPAs) are considered as an effective tool in marine coastal management, and considered able to enhance local fisheries through adult fish spillover. Indirect evidence of fish spillover could be obtained by horizontal gradients in fish abundance. To address this question, the existence of gradients of fish abundance and biomass across marine reserve boundaries was assessed in six Mediterranean MPAs using underwater visual censuses performed at various distances from the core of the MPA, in integral reserve (IR), to buffer zone (BZ) and fished areas. A reserve effect was evidenced with higher values of fish species richness (×1.1), abundance (×1.3), and biomass (×4.7) recorded inside MPAs compared to adjacent fished areas. Linear correlations revealed significant negative gradients in mean fish biomass in all the reserves studied after the effect of habitat had been removed, whereas negative gradients in abundance were less conspicuous. Generalized additive models suggested two main patterns of biomass gradients, with a sharp decrease at the IR-BZ boundary or at the BZ-fished area boundary. It was estimated that fish spillover beneficial to local fisheries occurred mostly at a small spatial scale (100s of metres). The existence of regular patterns of negative fish biomass gradients from within MPAs to fished areas was consistent with the hypothesis of adult fish biomass spillover processes from marine reserves and could be considered as a general pattern in this Mediterranean region.  相似文献

Different bioactive molecules, such as CGRP-like peptides, can be found in fish protein hydrolysates. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a neuropeptide known to act as a potent arterial and venous vasodilator in humans. This study focuses on the industrial obtaining of CGRP-like molecules from saithe (Pollachius virens) byproduct, derived from the filleting process. Protein from P. virens was primarily hydrolyzed with Alcalase and later treated with Saccharomyces cerevisiae live cells. Treatment with Saccharomyces doubled the quantity of bioactive molecules obtained. The CGRP-like molecules were partially purified by chromatography, and the immunoreactive material was further analyzed for its CGRP-like bioactivity, using a specific radioreceptor assay. The concentration of CGRP-like molecules increased over 100-fold after purification. The bioactive molecules were able to induce cyclic AMP stimulation in rat liver membranes. Finally, partial sequencing of the bioactive peptide was performed, showing some homology with alpha-actin and myosin of several fish species.  相似文献

The effect of the pH of heating (6.3-7.3) on the composition of sera in reconstituted skimmed milks was investigated. A combination of SDS-PAGE analysis and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) combined with an original approach to the analysis of the SEC profiles was performed. The composition of the sera varied greatly when the pH of heating was adjusted below and above the natural pH of milk. The formation, composition, and concentration of heat-induced soluble complexes depended on the combination of the effect of adjusting the pH of the milk and the heat treatment. Two types of mechanism for the formation of soluble aggregates appeared to exist, depending on the pH of the milk. The first type results from the formation of WP/kappa-casein aggregates at the surface of the micelle, and these were detached partially into the serum in larger amount as the pH increased up to 6.7, where it reaches a maximum. The second type of complexes, whose amount increased as the pH of heating increased from 6.7 to 7.3, may be formed between caseins (kappa- but also perhaps some alpha(s)-casein) and aggregated WP resulting in complexes that are smaller in size and with a higher kappa-casein/whey protein ratio than the first type.  相似文献

We measured the elemental compositions of material from 23 particles in aerogel and from residue in seven craters in aluminum foil that was collected during passage of the Stardust spacecraft through the coma of comet 81P/Wild 2. These particles are chemically heterogeneous at the largest size scale analyzed ( approximately 180 ng). The mean elemental composition of this Wild 2 material is consistent with the CI meteorite composition, which is thought to represent the bulk composition of the solar system, for the elements Mg, Si, Mn, Fe, and Ni to 35%, and for Ca and Ti to 60%. The elements Cu, Zn, and Ga appear enriched in this Wild 2 material, which suggests that the CI meteorites may not represent the solar system composition for these moderately volatile minor elements.  相似文献

Forest trees display a perennial growth behavior characterized by a multiple-year delay in flowering and, in temperate regions, an annual cycling between growth and dormancy. We show here that the CO/FT regulatory module, which controls flowering time in response to variations in daylength in annual plants, controls flowering in aspen trees. Unexpectedly, however, it also controls the short-day-induced growth cessation and bud set occurring in the fall. This regulatory mechanism can explain the ecogenetic variation in a highly adaptive trait: the critical daylength for growth cessation displayed by aspen trees sampled across a latitudinal gradient spanning northern Europe.  相似文献

This study investigated near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to rapidly estimate physical and mechanical properties of No. 2 2 × 4 southern pine lumber. A total of 718 lumber samples were acquired from six mills across the Southeast and destructively tested in bending. From each piece of lumber, a 25-mm-length block was cut and diffuse reflectance NIR spectra were collected from the transverse face using a FOSS 5000 scanning spectrometer. Calibrations were created using partial least squares (PLS) regression and their performance checked with a prediction set. Overall moderate predictive ability was found between NIRS and the properties for the calibration and prediction sets: block specific gravity (SG) (R 2 = 0.66 and R p 2  = 0.63), lumber SG (0.54 and 0.53), modulus of elasticity (MOE) (0.54 and 0.58), and modulus of rupture (MOR) (0.5 and 0.4). Model performance for MOE (R p 2  = 0.70) and MOR (R p 2  = 0.50) improved when performing PLS regression on a matrix containing lumber SG and NIR spectra. Overall NIRS predicted MOE better than linear models using lumber SG (R 2 = 0.46), whereas lumber SG (R 2 = 0.51) predicted MOR better than NIRS. Overall NIRS has reasonably good predictive ability considering the small volume of wood that is scanned with the instrument.  相似文献

The diversity of predatory species plays a key role in ecosystem functioning but our understanding of the mechanisms underlying their coexistence is limited, particularly in freshwater ecosystems. Northern pike Esox lucius, European perch Perca fluviatilis and pikeperch Sander lucioperca are three widespread predatory species in European lakes, where they often coexist. As potential competitors, we hypothesised that partitioning habitat is a determinant of species coexistence. This was tested by quantifying the variability of their habitat use in tracking adult individuals in the Bariousses reservoir (France, 86.6 ha, mean depth 7.1 m). Specifically, we investigated their distribution along the littoral–pelagic and depth axes along the daily cycle and across seasons. From littoral to pelagic waters were first found pike, then perch and finally pikeperch. Pike was the closest to the surface while pikeperch was the deepest. This general pattern was, however, variable across seasons with the three species located in the upper layer in summer during reservoir stratification. Individuals were more evenly distributed along the littoral–pelagic axis and closer to the bottom when water was mixing (autumn, winter). In summer, perch used more intensively in the pelagic zone during the daytime. Other species did not show any diel change of habitats. Our results highlighted that species coexistence is associated with habitat partitioning among these three predators, with perch showing a more variable behaviour regarding habitat characteristics. Now more than ever, in the context of global change which modifies habitats, it is of crucial importance to understand the coexistence mechanisms of species that shape ecosystems.  相似文献
