The SAR11 clade consists of very small, heterotrophic marine alpha-proteobacteria that are found throughout the oceans, where they account for about 25% of all microbial cells. Pelagibacter ubique, the first cultured member of this clade, has the smallest genome and encodes the smallest number of predicted open reading frames known for a free-living microorganism. In contrast to parasitic bacteria and archaea with small genomes, P. ubique has complete biosynthetic pathways for all 20 amino acids and all but a few cofactors. P. ubique has no pseudogenes, introns, transposons, extrachromosomal elements, or inteins; few paralogs; and the shortest intergenic spacers yet observed for any cell.  相似文献

Australian examples of surplus killing by mammalian predators were collated. These included surplus killing of native mammals and birds by foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and stock, native mammals and native birds by dingoes (Canis lupus dingo). We found no examples of surplus killing by feral cats (Felis catus). Incidents collated include historical anecdotes of surplus killing by foxes as they colonised the Australian mainland, recent examples where foxes killed threatened native species at sites despite intensive management to exclude foxes, and recent examples of the killing of native species on formerly fox-free islands to which foxes gained entry. Episodes of surplus killings by foxes, other than predation on captive or closely confined animals, appeared different in kind and frequency to those documented for co-evolved predator-prey systems on the large continental landmasses. They did not appear to be uncommon events associated with synchronised births of prey species, unusual or extreme weather that disadvantaged prey species, or seasonal food caching by a predator. Rather, surplus killing events appeared to reflect ineffective anti-predator defences by prey species when encountering a novel and efficient predator to which they have had no evolutionary exposure. We suggest that surplus killing by foxes may have been a feature of, and major contributor to, the rapid mainland extinction or contraction in range of many native species in Australia. In contrast to foxes, examples of surplus killing by dingoes relate mostly to domestic stock (calves and sheep). The arrival of dingoes to the Australian continent preceded that of foxes by 3500-4000 years, but they appear not to have had the dire impact on native mammals that we attribute to foxes. This may be due to fundamental differences in hunting styles and prey size and to their sparse populations in pre-European Australia. Active persecution of non-commensal dingoes by Aborigines, the lack of free-water, and the absence of European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) as an alternative food supply would have limited their numbers and their impact on native mammals.  相似文献

Research has verified field observations that cows grazing ponderosa pine needles may abort. The incidence and nature of the abortions produced experimentally simulate very closely those reported by livestock producers and veterinarians. The incidence of experimentally-produced abortions varied markedly from year to year even though the needles were collected in the same general area each year. This suggests that the abortifacient compound(s) in the needles vary from year to year, probably due to environmental and site conditions. The impact of stress (cold and nutrition) as a factor in the abortions was examined. It was concluded that the only effects would be on the willingness of cows to eat the needles. The pine needle abortion problem, what is known of the etiology, and mechanisms of the abortion are reviewed. The usefulness of bioassay systems to study pine needle abortions is discussed.  相似文献

Consumption of Ponderosa pine needles by late-pregnant beef cows results in the premature delivery of a viable calf. We have demonstrated the presence of a factor(s) in plasma from cows fed pine needles that specifically increased uterine arterial tone (i.e., decreased arterial diameter) in vitro. This study was designed to investigate changes in uterine blood flow and steroid secretion/uptake by the gravid uterus of cows fed pine needles to induce premature parturition. Sixteen beef cows were laparotomized on d 240 of gestation, and an electromagnetic blood-flow probe was placed around the uterine artery supplying the gravid horn. Cows were randomly assigned on d 250 of gestation to a control (n = 8; 8.2 kg/d of alfalfa hay) or pine needle (n = 8; 2.7 kg/d of pine needles + 5.5 kg/d of alfalfa hay) diet. Uterine blood flow was monitored, and systemic blood (uterine arterial and[or] jugular venous) and uterine venous blood samples were collected daily between 0630 and 0800, just before feeding. Five of eight cows fed pine needles calved prematurely (average day of gestation = 260.2 +/- .6) compared with cows fed the control diet, which calved on 287.6 +/- 3.4 d of gestation. Uterine blood flow in the control cows remained constant from d 250 through the day of parturition. Large numbers of shoots have been obtained from the excised basal regions of leek plants, cultured on BDS medium. Shoots could be induced optimally upon media within the range of 6.0–8.0 mg 1?1 6-(3-methyl-2-buten-1-ylamino)-purine (2iP) and 1.0–2.0 mg 1?1 napthaleneacetic acid (NAA). Sub-culture of induced shoots onto fresh media, from the above hormone ranges, resulted in further multiplication. Sub-culture, onto fresh medium from the above hormone ranges, of the callus-like region around the bases of induced shoots and adjacent tissue, could also result in shoot production. Internally developing shoot primordia occurred in close proximity to meristematic regions, whereas superficially developing primordia did not show distinct affinities, although there was evidence of localised pockets of meristematic cells amidst senescing explant material at the surface of the culture. Such regions may represent early stages in the formation of the superficial primordia. The production of large numbers of leek shoots in vitro is mentioned in relation to present techniques of micro-propagation and cryopreservation.  相似文献

Detomidine is a sedative-analgesic which has a pharmacological profile similar to xylazine. There is evidence that the sedative effects are mediated through alpha-2 adrenoceptors.Cardiopulmonary responses were determined using detomidine as the principal agent and as a preanesthetic prior to the induction of general anesthesia. Compatibility with guaifenesin, sodium thia-mylal and halothane were determined.As in the case of xylazine, detomidine produces a slowing of heart rates. This was found to be either sinus bradycardia or heart block. There may be a corresponding increase in systolic blood pressures. The respiratory pattern is altered through the arterial blood gases and pH data supported evidence of adequate ventilation. The heart rate response to detomidine without anticholinergic treatment was transient and related to he duration of drug action.Atropine sulfate, 0.02 mg/kg i.v. was effective in preventing or treating bradycardia or heart block from detomidine. Heart rates also increased during the administration of guaifenesin and sodium thia-mylal when given 50 min poisit-detomidine.  相似文献

Shoots have been produced on callus derived from onion set and from seedling radicle tissue. Whilst callus of set origin responded optimally to medium containing the cytokinin 6-(3-methyl-2-buten-1-ylamino)-purine (2iP) at 2.00 mg l?1 and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) at 0.06 mg l?1, seedling radicle callus showed a range of response. The medium used for callus initiation, the age of callus, and the provision of a dark period following inoculation on to the organogenesis medium have been shown to be critical for shoot formation. A limited number of embryoids have been produced from cultures; their occurrence was usually associated with an increase in shoot numbers for the generative callus tissue. Meristemoid areas have been observed in light micrographs of callus cultured upon organogenesis media.  相似文献

To determine if specific binding of 125I-labeled gonadotropins to granulosa and thecal cells, or concentrations of steroids in ovarian follicles change during the postpartum anovulatory period, 21 suckled beef cows were slaughtered on d 7, 14, 28, 42 or 56 after parturition (n = 4 to 6 per d). After slaughter, 10 to 15 follicles were dissected from each pair of ovaries and categorized by diameter: small (1.0 to 3.9 mm), medium (4.0 to 7.9 mm) or large (greater than or equal to 8 mm). Progesterone (221 to 612 ng/ml), androstenedione (48 to 94 ng/ml) and estradiol (2.7 to 23.9 ng/ml) did not change (P greater than .10) in fluid of small or medium follicles from d 7 to 42 to 56 after parturition. Similarly, specific binding of human chorionic gonadotropin (125I-hCG) or follicle stimulating hormone (125I-oFSH) to homogenates of small, medium or large follicles did not change (P greater than .05). In contrast, progesterone in fluid of large follicles increased (P less than .05) 3.4-fold between d 7 and 14, but decreased (P less than .05) 55% between d 14 and 28. Concentrations of androstenedione in fluid of large follicles did not change (P greater than .10) from d 7 to 42 to 56. Concentrations of estradiol in fluid of large follicles remained constant between d 7 and 14, but increased (P less than .05) 4.2-fold between d 14 and 28. We conclude that during the postpartum anovulatory period, there is no change in steroidogenic capabilities of small or medium follicles, both of which predominantly produce progesterone.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
