Four isogenic varieties with different heights, derived from the Tuxpeño population, were grown in the tropics to evaluate their potential productivity. Short varieties were developed by two means: incorporation of the brachytic-2 gene and current selections of shorter plants. The tallest, original Tuxpeño produced the highest yield, next was the short-plant selection, while the brachytic varieties yielded least. Yield differences between the original and the short-plant selections were derived from the kernel size and the differences between those and the brachytic varieties, from the number of kernels. Incorporation of the brachytic gene is unlikely to improve the productivity of varieties because it results in low efficiency of leaves in dry matter production during ripening, caused by the limited sink size and the compact distribution of wide leaves. 相似文献

In the rice area around Velcelli, grain yields are reasonably high due to good management, and a situation similar to that of the “Akiochi” area in the western part of Japan is prevailing. In coastal areas of Spain and Portugal, rice yields are frequently very high due to the abundance of solar radiation. This study was performed to introduce the distinct aromatic fragrance of Lycopersicon peruvianum LA 1554 into the cultivated tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum. The strong breeding barriers existing between these two distantly related species were circumvented by the ovule selection and culture method. A large BC1F1 population was developed and among 127 plants, 36 were self‐compatible and yielded fruits. Fruits of some of these selected plants were found to be enriched with a sweet aromatic flavour. Sensory evaluation of the fruit aroma of these selected plants was performed by a panel of 12 members against one of the best consumer‐rated Japanese commercial tomato cultivars, ‘Momotaro’. Although extensive variation was observed in fruit‐aroma in the BC1F1 population, panel opinion on ‘flavour‐desirability’ significantly favoured the BC1F1 fruits of some selected plants over the cv. ‘Momotaro’. Therefore, it can be concluded that the aromatic fragrance of a ‘L. peruvianum’ accession has successfully been introduced into the cultivated tomato gene pool. 相似文献

When detached broad bean leaves were preinoculated with virulent strain B304 of Botrytis cinerea 24 h before a challenge inoculation with strain B304, lesion formation by B304 was significantly inhibited in red light but not in the dark. In leaves that were preinoculated with avirulent strain 021 and then challenged by B304, however, lesion formation was not inhibited even under red light. Such differences in lesion formation after the challenge inoculation with an avirulent strain were also observed with lesions caused by Alternaria alternata, a nonpathogen of broad bean and by avirulent strain 021R in the presence of germination fluid from spores of strains B304 and 021R. These results suggest the possibility that virulent B. cinerea produced a suppressor involved in induced susceptibility and an elicitor involved in resistance induced by red light during spore germination. 相似文献

The mRNA expression of GPRC5B, an orphan G protein-coupled receptor, is induced by retinoic acid (RA). Because RA plays critical roles in embryonic development, reproductive functions, metabolism and homeostasis, GPRC5B is also considered crucial in these physiological events. We investigated the changes in expression of GPRC5B and RA receptor (RAR) alpha mRNAs and immunohistochemical localization of their proteins in the murine placenta and yolk sac at 13.5, 15.5 and 17.5 days post coitus. Stable levels of GPRC5B and RARalpha mRNAs were detected in the placenta and yolk sac. In the placenta, GPRC5B was present in maternal and fetal vascular endothelial cells, stromal cells, fibroblast-like cells and glycogen cells. A strong reaction to RARalpha was detected in maternal and fetal vascular endothelial cells and stromal cells. The levels of GPRC5B and RARalpha proteins in maternal and fetal vascular endothelial cells decreased with gestation. In the yolk sac, GPRC5B and RARalpha proteins were detected in vascular endothelial cells, but their levels did not change during the gestation period. These findings indicate that GPRC5B is involved in RA-dependent morphogenesis/angiogenesis and regulation of extracellular matrix synthesis in the murine placenta and yolk sac. 相似文献

In vitro cell culture is a convenient tool for studying cellular mechanisms. In the present study, production of matrix-metalloproteinases (MMPs) in bovine endometrial (containing both epithelial and stromal cells) monolayer cells was examined. Blastocysts attached to the endometrial cells in a monolayer culture were examined for their effects on MMP-2 production. Initial attachment of blastocysts to the monolayer inhibited MMP-2 production by endometrial cells. But once trophoblast cells began to migrate into the endometrial cell layer, MMP-2 production increased, and at the same time MMP-9 production also became evident in the medium. In order to understand how blastocysts affected MMP-2 production, we examined the effect of progesterone, estradiol, insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), tumor necrosis factors (TNFs), and interferon-tau (IFN-tau) supplementation. It was IFN-tau that inhibited the production of MMP-2. In addition, progesterone at a lower dose appeared to inhibit MMP-2 production. Both TNF-alpha and TNF-beta strongly stimulated the production of MMP-2 and MMP-9, whereas IGFs had no effect. Bulbs of ‘Soleil d'Or’, exposed to smoke generated from smouldering wood and fresh leaves for several hours on each of 4 consecutive days during storage, produced flowers earlier and at a higher rate, even when using bulbs which were too small to flower using normal methods. The smoked bulbs showed an earlier start of floral initiation and faster development. A temperature of 25°C was optimal for storage. Application of ethylene also gave similar promotive effects when repeated 4 times at 10 μl 1?1 for 1–5 h per day. A cell line (PL38PB) was established from blood samples of a 6-month-old pig that was diagnosed with lymphoma with CD5 expression. Histopathological examination revealed neoplastic lesions in the spleen, liver and lymph nodes. Tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for CD20 and immunoglobulin heavy chains (μ, γ and α). Membranous CD5 and cytoplasmic Immunoglobulin M (IgM), Immunoglobulin G (IgG) and Immunoglobulin A (IgA) were detected in PL38PB cells by flow cytometry. In addition, the cytoplasm of PL38PB cells were positive for IgM, IgG and IgA by immunofluorescent. However, no Ig secretion was detected in culture supernatant by Ouchterlony gel diffusion method. A total of 444 samples of raw chicken meat (thighs, breasts, wings, livers, gizzards, hearts and ovaries) that retailed at 145 different supermarkets in 47 prefectures in Japan were examined for contamination with Staphylococcus aureus in association with its enterotoxigenicity. S. aureus was isolated from 292 (65.8%) of the samples, and from 131 of the 145 supermarkets. There was no significant difference in the detection rate of S. aureus according to the type of meat examined. About 80% of 714 isolates belonged to the poultry (57.1%) and human biotypes (22.1%). Seventy-eight (21.7%) of 360 isolates were enterotoxigenic and isolated from 78 samples in 53 supermarkets in 31 prefectures. Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) produced were SEB (50 isolates), SEA (14), SEC (8), SED (2), SEA+SEB (2), and SEA+SEC (2). Most of the enterotoxigenic isolates belonged to the human and poultry biotypes, coagulase type VII, VIII or IV, and were lysed by phages of group III. Identical SE types, biotypes, coagulase types and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns were shown in isolates from different types of meat at the same supermarket and from samples taken from different supermarkets in the same prefectures or in isolates from samples obtained from several different prefectures. Among the 50 SEB-producing isolates, 27 yielded three similar PFGE patterns that differed by only a few fragments, suggesting that they were closely related genetically. The three patterns were found in isolates of samples that retailed at 17 supermarkets in 11 prefectures, indicating that they may be disseminated among raw chicken meat in Japan. 相似文献
