In a greenhouse pot study, we examined the availability of N to grain sorghum from organic and inorganic N sources. The treatments were15N-labeled clover residues, wheat residues, and fertilizer placed on a sandy clay loam and loamy sand soil surface for an 8-week period. Soil aggregates formed under each soil texture were measured after 8 weeks for each treatment. Significantly greater 15N was taken up and recovered by grain sorghum in sandy clay loam pots compared with loamy sand pots. Greater 15N recovery was consistently observed with the inorganic source than the organic sources regardless of soil texture or time. Microbial biomass C and N were significantly greater for sandy clay loam soil compared with the loamy sand. Microbial biomass 15N was also significantly greater in the sandy clay loam treatment compared to the loamy sand. The fertilizer treatment initially had the greatest pool of microbial biomass 15N but decreased with time. The crop residue treatments generally had less microbial biomass 15N with time. The crop residues and soil texture had a significant effect on the water-stable aggregates formed after 8 weeks of treatments. Significantly greater water-stable aggregates were formed in the sandy clay loam than the loamy sand. Approximately 20% greater water-stable aggregates were formed under the crop residue treatments compared to the fertilizer only treatment. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the province of Castellón, in eastern Spain, has been one of the most important areas of floor and wall tile production on both a national and worldwide scale. As a result of this sector??s productive rate of development (in the 1970?C2005 interval), a series of pollution-producing chemical substances has been introduced into the atmosphere. The objective of this study is the comparison between industrial?Curban and rural zones in this province, with the goal of establishing the causes of the contamination in order to apply corrective measures upon the different emission sources. Sustainable development is sought after to guarantee that, in the future, the environmental quality parameters fall within legal limits, ensuring the population??s well-being as well as conserving natural ecosystems and material assets. Total suspended particles and PM10 are the parameters studied. The reason for choosing this pollutant type is because particulate matter may present a much higher potential risk despite its low representativeness as compared to the gas pollutant??s group. A positive correlation between high particle concentrations and deterioration in public health has been shown in recent studies. The elements As, Cd, Ni, and Pb in PM10 were also analyzed to determine the toxicity of these particles. This study has demonstrated the different behaviors of the parameters studied at different types of stations (industrial?Curban and rural), leading to the conclusion that anthropogenic factors are very important in the area studied and that they determine the area??s air quality to a great extent. 相似文献

Sawflies (Perga species) are leaf-damaging pests of the major plantation tree species Eucalyptus globulus ssp. globulus. This work describes the patterns of quantitative genetic variation in susceptibility to attack by Perga affinis ssp. insularis, based on data from a large open-pollinated trial containing genetic material from throughout the geographic range of E. globulus ssp. globulus. Forty three per cent of the trees in the trial exhibited damage from sawflies in either their sixth or seventh growth seasons. The incidence of damage was genetically based, with significant variation between geographic races of E. globulus ssp. globulus and highly heritable (h2=0.43±0.05) variation in damage incidence within races. Susceptibility to sawfly damage significantly affects plant fitness with both genetic and environmental correlations demonstrating that sawfly damage causes slow growth and increased mortality of trees. Mild and severe sawfly damage resulted in 16 and 31% reduction in the basal area of surviving trees, and the effect was consistent across races and families. Based on this data, we propose a model predicting relative plantation productivity of races of different susceptibility under different infestation regimes. 相似文献

An alleycropping system (AC), usingAlbizia julibrissin as the tree species, was compared to an annual legume-based cropping system (NA) over a three-year period. In both AC and NA, a crop rotation was implemented with the following sequence:Mucuna deering iana, Trifolium incarnatum, Sorghum bicolor, Triticale aestivum, andSorghum bicolor. Aboveground biomass of crops was analyzed for C, N, P, K, Ca, and Mg. A soil fractionation method was used to determine P dynamics in different treatments through time. Aboveground net primary productivity (NPP) was higher in the AC than in the NA. Nutrient input-output balance of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg from January through November 1991 was higher for AC than for NA. Area-based sorghum yield in 1991 was lower in AC than in NA. comparative sorghum yield in 1991 at 1 m distance from the hedgerow was lower than NA sorghum. In a three year period, the alleycropping system seemed to be more efficient in tapping unavailable forms of soil P, and achieved a higher P stock than the annual legume-based cropping system. 相似文献

Composed mostly of fungivorous species, the genus Aphelenchoides also comprises 14 plant-parasitic species. The most common and devastating, A. besseyi, A. fragariae, A. ritzemabosi and A. subtenuis have been reported on more than 900 plant species. The combination of low inter-specific and high intra-specific morphological variability makes morphology-based identification extremely difficult within this genus, and has led to molecular tools being employed to ensure accurate diagnoses. rDNA markers are widely used for the identification of nematodes while the Cytochrome Oxidase I gene (COI) remains relatively unexplored despite its role as the standard barcode for almost all animal groups. To explore its suitability as a diagnostic tool, we studied a fragment of the mtCOI region of the four main plant-parasitic Aphelenchoides within a phylogenetic framework. We generated 69 mtCOI and 123 rDNA sequences of diverse Aphelenchoides taxa; 67 belong to the main plant-parasitic species including the first mtCOI sequence of A. fragariae and the first mtCOI and 28S sequences of A. subtenuis. mtCOI had a similar success rate for PCR amplification. Phylogenetic trees based on the three studied markers are largely in agreement with one another, validating their use for Aphelenchoides diagnosis; additionally, we were able to locate several misidentified sequences of plant-parasitic Aphelenchoides in existing databases. The concatenated analysis from the three markers resulted in a more robust insight into the phylogeny and evolution of Aphelenchoides, revealing that plant-parasitism has evolved independently at least three times within this genus, presumably from fungal-feeding ancestors. 相似文献
