Recent analyses propose that the key regulatory processes in fisheries are stochastic, characterized by increased recruitment variance at low stock sizes (heteroscedasticity). Here, we investigate the consequences of this idea, with the aim of testing its practical relevance to fisheries management. We argue that stock‐recruitment time series are at least one order of magnitude too short to reliably fit heteroscedastic models; indeed, they are typically insufficient even to establish in which direction recruitment variance changes with stock size. Unreliable estimates of heteroscedasticity can have important management implications, depending on the sign of the coefficient of heteroscedasticity. Maximum sustainable yield (MSY) estimates from simple models, which include heteroscedasticity can be volatile, unrealistically high and sometimes non‐existent, as illustrated by an analysis of North Sea cod (Gadus morhua) data. In contrast, for North Sea herring (clupea harengus) data, heteroscedasticity has a negligible effect on MSY estimates. Statistical models are useful to elucidate broad‐scale regulatory processes, but will need to combined with the mechanistic understanding offered by models of population dynamics before being applied in a management setting. 相似文献

This study was conducted in 36 indoor 40‐L fibreglass aquaria to determine the weight gain and survival of Litopenaeus vannamei fed different dietary levels of fish (FM) and squid meal (SM) and to evaluate the potential of phytoplankton to reduce FM and SM levels in shrimp feeds. Six experimental isonitrogenous (35% protein) and isocaloric (17.5 kJ g?1) diets were formulated to contain either 5%, 10% or 20% SM combined with either 6.5% or 12% FM. Dietary effects on growth and survival were compared in two systems: a ‘CLEAR water system’ (CWS) without the presence of microalgae and a ‘GREEN water system’ (GWS) with microalgae in the culture water. Shrimp cultured in the GWS had 28–57% greater weight gain than those cultured in the CWS, regardless of dietary treatment. However, survival was not different. Shrimp cultured in the CWS or the GWS, and fed diets containing combinations of FM and SM did not show differences in weight gain and feed conversion ratio. These results suggest that under the conditions existing during this research, 6.5% FM and 5% SM can be used as a cost‐effective combination in commercial feeds for shrimp production and that growth can be enhanced in the presence of primary productivity. 相似文献

A 6-month-old Warmblood filly presented for evaluation of a left sided unilateral mucopurulent discharge of 5 weeks' duration. Upper airway endoscopy revealed a large, smooth mass in the region of the ethmoturbinates. Dorso-ventral and lateral radiographs of the head revealed a large osseous mass in the left paranasal area. A biopsy was performed under general anaesthesia and an osteoma was diagnosed. A computed tomography (CT) examination was performed to guide surgical removal. Surgery was performed under general anaesthesia and a large mass was removed ~15 × 9 cm. A CT examination 3 months following surgery revealed three small areas of mineralisation. It was difficult to differentiate if these were areas of regrowth or portions of the original mass that were not entirely removed. A CT examination 8 months later revealed one of the areas had increased moderately in size. A second surgery was performed standing to remove the growth. A final CT 8 months later revealed no further evidence of a bone growth. This report describes the successful removal of an osteoma regrowth following initial surgical removal and, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, is the first to describe the reoccurrence of an osteoma after surgical intervention. It also describes a successful rhinotomy in the standing equine patient. This case highlights the importance of serial follow-up imaging after surgical removal as osteoma regrowth occurred in this case. 相似文献

Land disposal of waste drilling fluid is an environmental concern because of the high salt content and the presence of potential toxic elements. A water-based drilling fluid was tested in a laboratory column study to determine the feasibility of leaching excessive salt without mobilizing chromium (Cr). The drilling fluid-affected two Alfisols with similar mineralogy, acidity, and texture were treated with gypsum (CaSO4 · 2H2O), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), or calcium phosphate (CaHPO4) (0 to 2% of weight). The electrical conductivity (EC) increased and the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) decreased with increasing Ca-salt concentration. The pH did not vary significantly with the changes in the concentrations of gypsum and calcium phosphate. The pH of the mixtures increased in proportion to the concentration of added calcium carbonate. The hydraulic conductivity increased and the mobility of the soil particles decreased with increasing Ca-salt concentration. The Cr mobility decreased by gypsum and CaCO3 treatments but it increased by calcium phosphate treatment. The soil with a higher content of organic matter and cation exchange capacity (CEC) showed a higher hydraulic conductivity and lower Cr mobility than the other soils at the same levels of the treatment. The results of this study suggest that the amendment of drilling fluid-affected soils with CaCO3 and gypsum can enhance the leaching of excessive salt and reduce the Cr mobility. Among loamy soil, those with a higher CEC and organic matter content are more suitable for land disposal of drilling fluid. 相似文献
