Purpose
Visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) reflectance measurements may be an alternative technique to identify suspended sediment sources in streams of headwater catchments. In this study, we examined if Vis-NIR reflectance measurements are capable of estimating sediment source contributions to sediment yield and compared this technique with a more conventional (i.e. geochemical) technique.Materials and methods
Two headwater catchments in Ethiopia, Unta (2,052 ha) and Desera (1,657 ha), were analysed with the same techniques in order to find similarities and differences in the results obtained. The first technique used Vis-NIR spectral analysis as a fingerprint, using a partial least squares regression model. The second technique was a quantitative composite fingerprinting technique using geochemical analysis of source materials and suspended sediment samples. As a comparison, the partial least squares model was also used on the geochemical data. In August and September 2009, 30 soil samples of three different land uses (landslides, croplands, and grazing lands) and 21 suspended sediment samples at the catchment outlet were collected. Source samples were sieved to <63 μm. Geochemical analyses consisted of total element concentrations, percentage carbon, percentage nitrogen, and atom percentage 15N and δ13C. Reflectance measurements were taken on dried source samples with a spectrometer.Results and discussion
Neither technique was able to predict the contributions of the three land use types; they could only distinguish between landslide and topsoil material. The agreement between the results of both techniques was significant for the Unta catchment (R 2?=?0.80) but not for the Desera catchment (R 2?=?0.39). The uncertainty of the technique using Vis-NIR reflectance measurements was slightly higher than with the geochemical approach. Both techniques revealed that topsoil erosion played an important role during storm runoff discharges. Using the partial least squares model for the geochemical data revealed that uncertainty can differ greatly when using other statistical techniques.Conclusions
The quantitative composite fingerprinting technique using spectral signatures from both source and suspended sediment samples was able to quantify the contribution of two source materials (landslides and topsoil). This study investigated the effect of biochar amendments on the retention and availability of plant nutrients and Al in seven acidic tropical soils from Zambia and Indonesia. The experiments carried out investigated whether the adsorption capacity of NH$ _4^+ $ in the soils increased upon the addition of biochar and which effect biochar had on available concentrations of NO$ _3^- $ , K+, Mn2+, Mg2+ , PO$ _4^{3‐} $ , and Al3+. These nutrients were selected as they represent those important to plant growth and soil quality. No significant increases or decreases in aqueous NH$ _4^+ $ ‐N concentration with additions of biochar were detected. The Gaines–Thomas model was used in order to calculate selectivity coefficients for NH$ _4^+ $ exchange (Kgt values). Following the addition of biochar to soil, Kgt values decreased showing a reduction in the selective binding of NH$ _4^+ $ in the biochar amended soil compared to the control. The concentration of NO$ _3^- $ increased following the addition of biochar to the soils. The addition of 5 and 10% biochar to the Indonesian soil did not significantly alter (t‐test confidence level 0.05) the sorption of PO$ _4^{3‐} $ to the soil–biochar mixtures as compared to the soil alone. However, the addition of biochar to the soil from Zambia increased the sorption of PO$ _4^{3‐} $ compared to the soil alone. The concentrations of K+ and Mg2+ were significantly increased for almost all soils (t‐test at the 0.05 confidence level) following the addition of biochar. Addition of biochar to all but two soils significantly decreased (t‐test confidence level 0.05) Mn2+ concentrations. The concentration of Al3+ in the soils decreased exponentially significantly (t‐test confidence level 0.05) following the amendment of biochar in accordance with the increase in pH observed when biochar was added to the soil. These results show that biochar has the ability to release essential plant growth nutrients as well as alleviate Al toxicity in these soils. 相似文献

Composition, structure and diversity of oribatid communities inhabiting saxicolous mosses and lichens were studied in the Krkonoše Mts. (Czech Republic) along an altitudinal gradient reaching from submontane to alpine belt. Samples of various saxicolous mosses and lichens from 197 stands were collected. Impact of altitude and dominant moss or lichen species on community structure were analysed. Data were evaluated using divisive cluster analysis and direct ordination analysis. Altogether 104 oribatid species were recorded. Four groups of saxicolous habitats, which differ in the composition of their oribatid communities, were distinguished:1. Mosses below the upper forest line with accessory higher plants growing on their surface. Higher plants indicate favourable moisture conditions and an appreciable degree of humus layer development. Their oribatid mite community is rich in number of frequent species and consists of ubiquitous species, ubiquitous species with higher requirements for moisture and amount of decaying organic matter, a high number of soil dwelling species and several hygrophilous species.2. Mosses below the upper forest line without accessory higher plants. They predominantly include mosses with no or only a weakly developed humus layer. Their oribatid mite community is composed mainly of ubiquitous species and a few soil dwelling species.3. Mosses in open areas above the upper forest line. Their humus layer is not developed at all or only weakly. Humidity and temperature fluctuations are here much higher compared with mosses below the upper forest line, which are protected by the specific forest microclimate. Their oribatid mite community is poor in number of frequent and dominant species and consists predominantly of Oribatula cf. pallida and two specialised species living exclusively in mosses and lichens (Mycobates tridactylus and Trichoribates monticola).4. Saxicolous lichens. Their oribatid community comprises ubiquitous species, species frequent both in mosses and lichens and several species with a strong affinity to lichens (Mycobates carli and five species of the genus Carabodes). 相似文献

In Tigray-northern Ethiopia, lack of sediment yield data and appropriate methodologies for predicting sediment yield have contributed to poor planning resulting in rapid sedimentation in reservoirs and storage capacity loss. The objectives of this study were: (1) to assess the spatial variability of absolute sediment yield (SY) and area-specific sediment yield (SSY) and to identify their controlling factors for 11 representative catchments and (2) to develop models to predict sediment yield. One of the major threats to the structure and the functioning of natural and semi-natural ecosystems is the recent increase in air-borne nitrogen pollution (NHy and NOx). Ecological effects of increased N supply are reviewed with respect to changes in vegetation and fauna in terrestrial and aquatic natural and semi-natural ecosystems. Observed and validated changes using data of field surveys, experimental studies or, of dynamic ecosystem models (the empirical approach), are used as an indication for the impacts of N deposition. Based upon these data N critical loads are set with an indication of the reliability. Critical loads are given within a range per ecosystem, because of spatial differences in ecosystems. The following groups of ecosystems have been treated: softwater lakes, wetlands & bogs, species-rich grasslands, heathlands and forests. In this paper the effects of N deposition on softwater lakes have been discussed in detail and a summary of the N critical loads for all groups of ecosystems is presented. The nitrogen critical load for the most sensitive ecosystems (softwater lakes, ombrotrophic bogs) is between 5–10 kg N ha–1 yr–1, whereas a more average value for the range of studied ecosystems is 15–20 kg N ha–1 yr–1. A feeding trial with growing pigs was carried out in which fish meal was replaced by different levels of Tra catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) by-product processing waste water (WW). A control diet included fish meal (FM) as the sole protein supplement (WW0), and
there were four experimental diets in which 100% (WW100), 75% (WW75), 50% (WW50), and 25% (WW25), respectively, of the crude
protein from FM in WW0 was replaced by WW. Thirty crossbred castrated (Yorkshire × Landrace) male pigs with an initial average
body weight of 23.6 ± 1.6 kg were allocated into 30 individual pens in a randomized complete block design with six replications.
Average daily feed intake and essential amino acid intakes were higher (P < 0.01) in WW0 and WW25 compared with the other three diets, and ether extract intake was highest in WW100 (P < 0.01). The highest average daily gain was in WW0 (582 g/day) and lowest in WW100 (501 g/day; P < 0.01). Dry matter feed conversion ratio was lowest in WW100 (2.16 kg feed/kg gain) and highest in WW0 (2.42 kg feed/kg
gain) (P < 0.01).The cost/gain in pigs fed WW100 was lowest (12,476 VND/kg gain), and was highest in WW0 (18,312 VND/kg gain). In
conclusion, although performance is reduced, it is possible to replace up to 100% of the fish meal by catfish by-product processing

Structural requirements for compounds involved in Allium discoloration have been investigated in detail. The abilities of all 20 protein amino acids and six naturally occurring 1-propenyl-containing thiosulfinates to form the pigments have been studied. Furthermore, several analogues of these thiosulfinates were prepared by synthesis, and their color-forming abilities were evaluated, together with those of various amino compounds. It has been found that an unsubstituted primary amino group and a free carboxyl group are essential structural features required for amino compounds to be able to generate the pigments. Out of the thiosulfinate analogues tested, only those containing at least a three-carbon chain with the beta-carbon bearing a hydrogen atom yielded the pigments after reacting with glycine. Thiosulfonates, sulfoxides, sulfides, and disulfides did not form any colored products when mixed with glycine. The pH optimum for pigment formation has been found to be between 5.0 and 6.0 for all thiosulfinates tested. 相似文献

Objective criteria are needed for ranking marine sites when examining candidate areas for protection measures. We suggest a Marine Classification Criterion (MCC) which allows the application of the widely used Ramsar 1% criterion for wetlands for seabirds with clustered distribution in offshore habitats. The maximum size of an area considered to be internationally important has not been defined by the Ramsar Convention. Terrestrial and coastal sites generally have obvious hydrological or physical boundaries, whereas such boundaries are less obvious at sea. The smallest unit which would pass the demands set by the MCC is 1% of the bio-geographic population of a particular species concentrated in an area (site) supporting a density exceeding a value equivalent of four times the average density of the species in the investigated regional sea. The effect of choosing smaller or larger reference densities is tested. The results indicate that the chosen threshold density is a suitable requirement for the inclusion of the most important areas for seabird species with at least 25% of their bio-geographic population occurring in the studied regions of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The test cases indicate that provided the MCC is based on geo-statistical analyses of un-biased survey data the boundaries of areas holding large concentrations of seabirds can be estimated with confidence. The MCC could be used to identify concentrations of seabirds and other marine animals of conservation priority and to rank marine areas by their cumulative importance to different species. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The addition of carbonates to a nutrient solution to alleviate ammonium (NH4 +) toxicity in hydroponically-grown cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) plants was investigated. Stable isotopes [nitrogen (15N) and carbon (13C)] were used to assess the uptake of nitrogen [NH4 + or nitrate (NO3 ?)] as well as carbon [bicarbonate (HCO3 ?)/carbonate (CO3 2?)] by the roots. Ammonium as the sole N source at 5 mM decreased plant fresh weights compared to NO3 ?. However, at lower concentrations of NH4 + (25% of 5 mM total N), growth was increased compared to NO3 ? alone. Inorganic C enrichment [calcium carbonate (CaCO3)] of the nutrient solution increased the fresh weight of NH4 + grown plants with up to 150% relative to control plants receiving calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] for pH regulation. Root 15N enrichment was lower in 15NH4 + supplied plants compared to 15NO3 ?, while the 13C enrichment in leaves was increased by NH4 + nutrition compared to NO3 ? or NH4NO3. The enhanced C capture was associated with high PEPCase activity in the roots. It is concluded that inorganic carbon enrichment of the root medium may alleviate NH4 + toxicity via increased synthesis of C skeletons and, accordingly, increased capacity for NH4 + assimilation and N export to the shoots. 相似文献
